  • The papaya fruit become quick large if the weather stay hot and sunny for a long period.

  • Have you tried grafting female plants to males? This might be a goer as you have so many male plants. Cheers

  • The only reason I've ever heard for having blocks/rocks under the tree is to encourage root spread. Does anyone know what the average yield for a Paw Paw tree is? Thanks, am planning on planting a few of these trees myself,

  • why don't you cover them with bags like you do with grapes and other fruits?

  • Thank so much for this video

  • isnt paw paw and papaya 2 differents fruits? why do evryone talk about papaya?

  • @Lacadien911 They are different trees/ fruit, but the true name of this one is Papaya. Its just a difference in the common naming convention.

In Australia the common name is Paw Paw, but as I said, technically its not correct.

  • There are actually 3 sexes in papaya, Female, male ,and hermaphrodite. The Hem. are preferred commercially because they produce elongated fruit, which has more mass and is preferred by customers in stores. here is the formula for knowing what a cross will give you: Male X Fem = 50/50% chance, Male X HEM = 33/33/33% chance, Fem X Hem = 50/50% , and Hem X Hem = 66/33% so what farmers do is plant 4 plants close together, and when they flower, then keep the hermaphrodite or healthiest female -

  • - Hermaphrodites are preferred because of superior fruit and they are self pollinating, they can pollinate the females. Female trees will produce rounder fruit, elongated fruit are from hermaphrodite, if all your trees are hem. ( no males within kilometers ) then the seeds from those fruit will have a 66% chance of producing Hem, and 33% producing female. with no male plant chance !!

  • @gilgamesh1962 how can i protect my plants from infection and hardship?

    does the lime really work?

Is the HEM more resilient to hardship.

in the past I've grown papaya that was infected in such a way that the trunk was hollow and rotton inside while appearing healthy, the fruit growed to a size of an avocado , stayed green and rotted on the inside also.what may have been the cause of this?

how else can i decide for sure on my tree's sex ?

how can i organiclly treat and maintain?

  • @cheweydan Limited space here ill try and answer some, papaya are susceptible to fungal disease, you do not want to over water. some varieties are more resilient than others, check Alohaseeds website for dif varieties, tree sex can be determined by the flower, if its on a long branching stem, its male, you can get more info online, also check tropicalpermaculture site, they have an article on growing papaya.

  • you'll get mostly female papaya by popping the seed out of the soft seed case and soaking them overnight in a solution of potassium nitrate.

  • Interesting videos all. In most Youtube videos people just lecture, while you ask questions as well. Not a complaint just a comment. I wonder if you are refering to cinder blocks (Bessers)? I wish Maryland had your weather.

  • What the Fuck??? The dog is puking!!!

  • lol you papaya pimp! :P

  • we call them papaya in the states. a paw paw here is a native tree in the annonaceae family

it has a fruit that has a flavor like a mango/custard/banana. i have a hard time growing papaya here in south florida because we have a wasp that lays its eggs in the fruit and eats the insides out

  • Hey thanks, I new there was a slight difference around the world! Have you ever tried to use a net over the tree to keep out the wasps? We use nets over here more for the fruit bats and birds, but they could work for wasps. We also get fruit fly - they look more like a big mosquito, but for them we use liquid bates in jars and sort of drown them.

  • @kiyafarm but then if you net it, how will it pollinate?

  • @dwiggs77 Have you tried wrapping the fruit in a bag early on before the wasp's get to it?

  • I've put a whole bunch of seeds in a pot, (eventually they will go in the ground) now I see that the whole pollination process needs to happen. So, when do I separate the male and female plants for good? How do I know when to permanently isolate a female that I think might have been pollinated? what do I do with the male plants? get rid of them? Will the female tree always fruit? , or does it have to be pollinated every season? if u can, make another video and explain 4 stupid people like me :)

  • They are beautiful. Apparently there is a variety that will grow ok here in Tasmania...must see what I can find out. Flowering and lime hey...thanks for that. Complete newbie here but got vegies growing at least. Look forward to seeing your Female fruit. Good luck with getting those female pawpaws.

  • dasher has a cutie patootie!
