  • Where in hell's the tambourine coming from? And the trap set?

  • If I didn't say it before, nice job Conn6M! Good alto sound and nice improv.

  • @saxophonedave Thanks Dave. This is really for Richie Cole fans(even though a lot of them seem ungratefull) I usually play this tune much faster (around 300bpm) with expanded bars and lots of sub chords to speed up harmonic motion. I've spent the last year studying traditional European music but I have a little time now so I might put the fast version on in the future (when Ive practised a bit)

  • man conn6m is one militant user xD

  • Tuning...

  • Didnt meyer make a Richie Cole mouthpeice sometime recent? I think i remember seeing it somewhere..

  • amazing

  • I'm not professional but that looks like a arc soprano sax.

  • Hey I'm Brian Klock, alto player in Philly, and Richie Cole has been a huge inspiration of mine. He has the chops to keep up with anyone. Maybe Richie Cole realizes that jazz isn't about showing off, it's about expressing what you feel at the time, and anyone who doesn't realize that has no business even listening to jazz. The music isn't for people like you.

  • Who said I don't like Richie Cole - true there are some Cole solos I don't like -thoes on the Yas 62 alto.

Read my comments on the Jazz Excursion channel and don't tell me the music is not for me. Im the only person on You tube who understands Richie Cole's music - reading some of the stupid comments people write about him -keeping bebop alive etc. Richie Cole is not a Pure Bebop player. To say so is to insult his unique style. A pure bebop player could not have written Candace Flower.

  • 2. That's all you people ever think of 'got the chops to keep up with anyone' I agree Jazz is about expressing what you feel at the time. however, I think his playing after Eddie Jeffersons death expressed hate exemplified by the sound on that Yamaha Yas 62 Alto Sax. I'm so pleased he's gone back to Selmer, his recent playing (last eight years) has been much better ( in fact he's playing better than ever)

    .

  • 3. Another thing. Why are you leaving such a stupid comment on my channel. I consider myself a Cannonball Adderley devotee but would never bother to attack someone out of malice just because they left a negative comment on an Adderley solo. Your comment shows what type of person you are. As far as my comments on Richie Cole go I make no apologies what so ever. I've spent good money on Cole Records and if I do/don't like his playing on a particular song Im going to let him know.

  • 4. One last thing. If you, or anyone else out there, are such big Richie Cole fans, then why are you not playing his music. I am not only playing his songs but I've actually dedicated one of my own compositions to him -'Richie Cole comes to tea' So stop whinning like a little baby just because I've hurt your feelings ( My opinion is not that important) and show us all what you can do.

  • nice outfit

  • All these people who call me a fake have been blocked so please don't waste your time answering their comments.

Some of you are going to say I can't take criticism. Well yes if its constructive, but thats not what we have here. Think about it - why would anyone want to call somebody a fake? (even if that person was one) To humiliate them in front of the world. That is the only reason! - and that is something I don't like. That is not the Jazz way of life, so thats why I've blocked them.

  • i dont play sax and that looks fake lmfao

  • hes not playing, i play sax and neither his fingers or his mouth are lining up with the music!!! his keys should be going crazy!!!

  • @thenight321 uhhh dude, there's a thing called audio delay where the audio happens to move quicker than the video or vice versa, thats why the fingering looks crazy! So before you make such judgements, please learn more about video errors as well...

  • i took that into account, when you see him take a breath and the only possible place he could, then u use that to check the fingerings with the notes. THEY STILL DON'T MATCH UP!!!

  • you have a really obnoxious tone. quit pinching the reed.

  • A bit like saying you prefer blondes over brunettes. Tone is a personal thing. The only person I like in your fav folder is Cannonball Adderley. I can't stand some of the others especially Kenny Garrett - but that doesn't mean I'm going to waste my time making a comment to that effect on any of his videos because it's subjective and meaningless.

  • @conn6m Difference being that your tone is due to poor technique. You're closing your throat and pinching the reed with your embouchure. That's why your upper register is so stuffy and sharp.

  • @grantula2346 Oversimplification on for what has been a big problem for me. If I was biting down that much the tone would become thinner, it does not. If it sounds stuffy to you it is more than likely poor recording (clipping on the high notes). See my reply to saxman 1141 on Richie Cole comes to tea for a fuller explanation.

  • its not fake its just a thing of timing between the video and the audio great song and great tone too!!

  • ur good can i have the notes

  • What a Con man, he wasn't playing at all, there were drum rhythms, though the song is pretty sexy.

  • I don't think he is really playing that, he took this mouth of the mouth peice and the sound kept coming out, I play the saxaphone. Watch his mouth 0.35 but it was an awesome song, well played. I liked it.

  • I think there is an audio delay

  • I Think if you look at his other postings you would conclude he is playing . What great playing.

  • hey i just bought some some sax reeds.i wanted to what #4 reeds mean. (those are the ones i bought)

  • whoever played this is a god

i want to learn how to play like him

  • Geez guys. Even if it is a fake (which I don't think it is) just appreciate you get to hear something this great.

  • you play in playback

  • Go away and don't come back. Im fed up of answering these stupid comments. Why don't you look at my other vids like 'Richie cole comes to tea' which makes this look like the simple pop tune it is.

  • well played!

  • thanks Lilpotashk19s its so nice to see a comment in which the writer is not calling me a fake.

  • well played man. i love this song where did you get the sheet music for it i love to learn to play it

  • I transcribed and arranged it myself from the Album 'Keeper of the flame', If you look at 'TheAremo' video response above you can hear the very track I transcribed it from. I have only ever seen one Richie Cole Transcription in a book and that was for his arrangement of 'I love Lucy' in the Shear real book used in the Uk. However, Im sure there must be some other American book out there with lot's of Richie's stuff in it. My trancription and arrangement can be seen on the other Video response.

  • this is perhaps the worst fake/dub that i hav seen in a long time, and even if it's real (which it's definately not) the sound quality is awful... the video and audio are not bad because they are not in sync, it's because it is a fake, and your fingers aren't in the right places for the corresponding notes from the audio and i have the album, your video is only a second longer and i lined it up on my audio format player

  • 1. You are an idiot. Do what I said below, put this on your own channel and watch me get it torn down for performers copyright theft go on if you dare. No kidding where do these people come from - I've never read so much rubbish in all my life. The reason why these people are shit players is because they don't practice but spend all there time Criticizing other people who are better then themselves - it kinda makes them feel less inadequate. Racists are exacltly the same kind of people.

  • 2. Im not calling saxlegend 44 a racist but the mind set of calling people fakes is the same type of thing.

Do you lot think Richie Cole who is represented on You tube by Jazz Excursion records is going to let some one mime to his solos then claim credit. Look anyone who has studied the like's of Cannonball Adderley is not going to be phased by anything Richie Cole could produce. No more of this fake nonsence please.

  • 3. If you lot don't like this vid mark me down if it falls to 3 stars I'll take it down myself. But let me tell you this; Richie Cole is quite happy to see vids of his music, he sees it as good publicity. You won't be doing him any favours.

To the rest of you out there who don't think Im a fake, thanks for your support - I know you are the majority and love you all.

  • Anyone who calls me a fake from now on will be blocked. I have already said its me playing. If you lot really think Im a fake why don't you copy the vid with real player put it on your own channel and expose me. Then watch how fast I get it pulled down for performers copyright violation.

  • also a baby can understand that it's in playback

  • hey, i wanna know where you get the accompanies. the drums and piano...at home, i just play my alto sax record it..i recently got some decent recording software, but i still sound kinda horrible alone...so my question is, where can i get some kind of accompanY?

  • Comment removed

  • i must agree, his fingers arn't movng fast enough

  • can u do EVERYTIME I CLOSE MY EYES?Pls...I love your music...It's great...

  • nice.

  • Hey what is your setup for recording? (mics, computer, software, hardware, etc)

  • 1. I used a borrowed mic from a singing friend. The backing music was from the Band in a Box 2006 program. (I've just got the latest version and it's far better with real instruments instead of completely midi.) The BB backing and mic go into a Pa system where I can add reverb etc then is recorded on to a Dvd. Its a really rubbish way to do it and as you can hear the sax is over recorded. I 've done another song with the output from the Pa going straight to the computer and that was better.

  • 2. The trouble is the camera and sound were miles out - and with everyone calling me a fake; I thought I'd leave it till I get it sorted out.

  • everytime i look up a vid with a "famous" instrumental genius playing, all it's comments are sooo literal.....pisses me off..

  • Well Tbh, I'll have to say the Alto Sax is a lot better! :)

    Souds alot nicer aswell!

  • which in your opinion is better, the tenor or alto saxophone?

  • Neither.

If you are learning I would go for the Alto sax. They are cheaper to buy and there is a lot more learning material available for them.

Many sax players play both because they love both. Others have a preference and prefer one over the other. Its purely personal. I like both but only play Alto.

You can play all the saxes, clarinet, flute etc and be great on them all. Listen to James Moody he's fabulous on anything.

  • 2. Hell, even Charlie Parker is miming on one of the You tube vids. Check out Charlie Parker Celebrity.

Why isn't anyone calling him a fake.

  • 1. I just want to make a comment about this faking nonsence. If you have ever put a Vid on you tube with the sound recorded separately to camera you notice that the Camera and sound don.t quite match up because of the different speeds of the recording equipment. So some people put vids on where they mime to their own playing. I did it myself on 'Goodbye George' the tune I did with Diesel Bodine. The people who call us fakes have no talent and mostly have never put anything on you tube.

  • Richy Cole is purely amazing.

  • I know Richie. My dad plays with him and I got to sit in with him a bit at rehearsals. He's written something like 5000 charts!

  • i play alto sax this aint to hard

  • Ok. Lets here you play it. The music is on one of my other vids.

  • i would if you wherent FAKING IT

  • Stupid. So what you are saying is that if anyone fakes a tune you are not going to play it. That is a bigger Insult to Richie Cole than me.

I can't imagine anyone who is a Cannonball fan refusing to play one of his compositions because they thought someone was faking it.

The truth is that you really cannot play isn't it. Come on; we are all waiting with baited anticipation to hear you.

  • punk You are an idiot That is not you. You Dick

  • You are a birdbrain and I mean that as an insult to birds. The next time you wash your neck do us all a favour and wring it.

  • FAKE you took your mouthpiece out of your entire mouth and was still playing LIER

  • Hell! Im even being attacked by little kids.

Instead of being jealous and wasting your time going around You tube trying to find something wrong in everyone who is better than you. Why don't you put that time to practice - who knows, one day you may really be better than me.

  • @SaxaphonePlayer115

Wow. Personally, I like your rendition of the words "saxophone" and "liar"-- also your subject and verb agreements. He recorded his audio and video with different devices so there is a delay. I'm sorry, but I've been reading all these comments and I think it's ridiculous how people want to just bash on absolutely anything. Sure, when I first saw this I was like "Whoa, his mouth wasn't on the mouthpiece.." then I realized why. Closed minds should come with closed mouths.

  • Thanks for defending me Arielle. How do the words to that song go. 'If you wanted the sky I would write across it in letters a thousand feet high - To Arielle with love'.

  • I think this is AWSOME!

Some people might think i am crazy but thats fine

I play the alto sax as well so i would be crazy if i didnt like this

  • Comment removed

  • I play sax. He's playing it. You guys are retarded.

  • K, honestly, who gives a crap if it's not in sync with the tune, or the guy faked it?

And since when is it about the vid and not the music?

I don't know what has gotten into people these days, sheesh.

  • probably they like to make BIG deals just for the attention.

  • It seems to me like you'd be better off playing another of his tunes. You added chord substitutions AND a swing feel?? What appeals to me about the song is the sparse changes. It allows him to show off his wonderful melodics. He might be a strong harmonic player, which you can interpret as "keeping bebop alive," but his real skill lies in his ability to make a melody on virtually any tune (he plays The Price is Right theme on another album).

And dropping the funk groove? Seriously?

  • I think Cole plays very good on New york afternoon (album Keeper of the Flame and New York afternoon but less so on Man with the horn) however I think my Version brings out the real beauty of Coles Harmonic writing. This is a lovely song and should be done all kind of ways. Yes, Cole's playing is very melodic on this song but I personally find modal playing boring and I'll admit I'm not that good at it.

I don't think he plays melodic on any tune.

  • 2 Im fed up of seeing this 'Keeping bebop alive' slogan. I don't consider Riche Cole a pure Bebop player - there is more to him than that. If you want to hear pure Bebop you listen to people like Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Stitt not Cole. Just remember that I am an Amateur player. I've never made a penny out of my playing so don't expect me to bring in studio musicians just to get a funky guitar sound. I'm limited to the Band in a Box program thats why this is swing.

  • 3. I love the price is right - great tune and Cole plays really well across the 3/4 and 4/4 sections. You can't possibly compare that to Coles awfull playing of Punishment Blues and Yardbird suite on Shimpei999 Channel. That band sounds to me like they all hate each other. The Eddie Jefferson/ Jazz Excursion stuff sounds like Love.

Its almost like Jeffersons death affected his playing.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Why are people so hung up about me playing in sync with the vid so much. I am playing in my living room. I swear on the life of my mother Ok. No kidding I could understand if I was playing Giant steps or something but this is easy. Check out my Bodinism for much more difficult playing through changes with no breaks in the vid.

  • Yo you member me (monkey9d3)

You posted music for me =) thanks alot for that.

  • lol the video is completely not the song. Music quality is too crisp for it to be from his living room. And not to mention while 0:38 he clearly takes his mouth of the sax even tho theres music playing. And if you watch his knee his beats are not timed at all

  • I don't think he's faking it. If you watch closely, it looks like the audio is ahead of the picture. I could be wrong though.

  • I've just had a message from Richie's Record Label. They have put on some new Videos of him playing in a Studio setting. I think they are quite good. Great Rhythm section. He even gets to play a couple of Cannonball Adderley tunes. Check it out at Jazzexcursion.

  • at 38 the music is playing but the guys mouth is not touching the sax its seems kinda fake that and the fact that his fingers arent moving that part at least

  • Hey your right. That Guy is a lousey Fake. I could mime better than that.

  • (lOl)

  • sick

  • not! the alto sax rocks! and the music does 2!~

  • sick means cool in slang language. you should study the world of slang

  • Well, Sorry Modern Jazz is so far below your standards tehhkrmn65. However, if you are a good boy, eat your dinner and get your Nappy changed, I may put on the Harry Potter theme next time.

  • nice solo but unfortunatly NY is not that peaceful

  • very found!(my drummer played in group whose name is urbansax)thanks for sharing!

  • Nice job...Are you using a Martin Sax?

  • No. A 1934 Conn 6m A.K.A 'underslung' or 'Naked lady'. However, Ive played 'The Martin' Alto sax of a friend of mine similar to the one Art Pepper played in the 50s - superb sax and much sought after.

  • Why can't I find the lyrics to this song anywhere?!

  • I know the lyrics I can transcribe the for you

  • Oh, thanks for offering! You needn't bother though, I found a recording. =)

  • well cool!

  • this is amazing!!! i absolutely love this song!!!

  • kinda sounds like a tenor but cool

  • I've been getting requests for copys of my arrangement of this song. No problem I'll put on a Vid of the transcription from Richie/Eddies version and my own arrangement.

However I think you all ought to try to transcribe it yourselves first then check your results against my solution. LOL

  • Hi Andy,

The best i've heard you play - great sound, nice backing. Remember all those years ago in the middle of winter bringing Richie Cole records home on the back of my Yamaha RD400 ?

    Keep up the good work,

    Steve.

  • Hi Steve. It seems ages since I saw you. I remember thoes bike rides really well I've still got cold hands. I'll try and get over to see you soon. Im doing a little project with Diesel Bodine and then my next tune will be an adaption of Chick Corea's Spain (Akoustic Band Arrangement) for Alto Sax - lot of work in that one. Ive almost finished transcribing it. The Chords are a nightmare.

  • It awsome but what i dont get at about 38 or somthing like that you take your mouth off the mouth peice and in some other spots taking a breath and music is still going on?? any one else noticeing that

  • Yep. I cut the film in 3 places to put in the pictures. When I spliced it together again I was off with the beat. I really didn't want to spend any more time getting it absolutely perfect because it doesn't really matter that much. Listen Carefully to the solo and you will hear a lot of Chord substitution -nobody seens to mention that.

  • o i c

  • i noticed that but when i got to typing i forgot sorry bout that =)

  • Sounds Great M8.

    Nice Sax I've got a 6m 2.

  • Perfect sound. Swing and elegance...

  • Very Nice. I hear some Cannonball is your phrasing.

  • Thanks D.J. I hope people take this opportunity to click on your name and check you out. One of the most remarkable Young Alto Players I've heard in a while. You warm my heart. The future of jazz is assured.

  • Couldn't agree more, outstanding talent.

Actually doing a bit saxophone-playing myself lately, after a couple of years off. What a feeling! :-)

  • Ha, I emulate Richie Cole! Well I must admit I didn't expect that. Not really, except the way I dressed - but in black - the evil Conn who says unkind things. I put this song on for Cole fans so I play it similar to the recording. However, my solo is over the chords to the tune, no one else has done that. Cole plays this in D (as an alto piece) Im playing in G which is the vocal Key. My solo owes nothing to Ritchie, although I admire some of his work. Listen -Its pure Cannonball Adderley.

  • very good job!!!! i think u emulate him a little much. Sometime try some of ur own stuff!

    VEERY GOOD JOB

  • you are really good i hope i can be as good as you one day

  • Great performance. Dig the video too.

  • Andy,

    Outstanding... really smooth.

I am going to take a second listen

    5 *****

    -Basement Bob

  • Very cool playing Andy, and all those pictures of Richie Cole, very nice.I think I saw him play once live in Nick Vollenbrecht Jazz Cafe in Laren,Holland(formerly the place for Live Jazz) many Americans and from players from all over the Globe have performed there.Nice playing only over the bass and a very memorable theme as well, enjoyed. Greets Victor.

  • Cool! I taped a Richie Cole at The Village Vanguard concert off the TV many years ago onto a cassette that was so awesome. I don't know what happened to that cassette. His Piano player was awesome as well as Richie and the whole band. Very fine job, Andy! 8-)

  • See! There are some good things on TV. The best Jazz we get in the Uk is beamed in from the French via satellite. The BBC occasionally broadcasts Jazz.
