This newslady is so ignorant it makes me sick. Watch the documentary "bag it" on tubeplus.me if you want to learn why specifically plastic is one of our most ecologically damaging products on the market today. I found it so disturbing i refuse to use plastic now.
There are indeed psychological ramifications for our over-indulgent lifestyles. We seem to be more intent on competing with our friends and neighbors via material acquisition than actually getting to know them on a deeper level. Our relations have become superficial as a result of our increasingly individualistic, hyper-consumer lifestyle and the end result is alienation from our work, our communities, and ourselves. I don't think I need to go over the ecological ramifications.
He seems to make perfect sense. and he's merely offering a suggestion. our government could have taken advice from him. but of course it's too late now.
Watch "the story of stuff" and you would understand a bit better what this overconsumption mean! It does have an impact on the environment and this impact is huge!
This reporter is really missing the point when she says his message would be more effective if it were about generosity. Reducing our consumption is perhaps the most generous thing we could do for our family, the world, and our future.
Yes it would send a good message we are doing this to support OWS and Anonymous world revolutions and it is ok to buy from small mom and pop shops by the way :P

@keeperbooth Yeah, a true media puppet discrediting a brilliant man. "Enviromental problems? Awww...Come on!", this was proof she is a devil's cocksucker.
We have to make a distinction between necessity and wants. The things we want are associated with status anxiety, eroding our understanding of common virtue, while being replaced with material junk that HAS NOT MADE US HAPPIER, rather, it causes us to become unhappy because we envy those with more than us. Wealth is relative, as hard as it is to believe it.
We need to start promoting virtue and build a sustainable, resource based economy, otherwise our future will look very bleak indeed.
i've made it a yearly ritual to put this flyer on my car, keeping it a long time before and after... good to spread the word way beyond BLACK FRIDAY...
BUY NOTHING DAY should be most every day... minus food and stuff u need of course... make yourself rich by wanting less - live well within your means:
“There is no dignity quite so impressive and no independence quite so important as living within your means.”
@HarmonicaBoss eloquent and masterful concise bit of a pithy bite on the crass consumer queen of this interview, good job! - we might someday be left with nothing more than bones!
His book honestly changed my life. I feel like I know him. And yet, this is the first time I've heard his voice. It sounds nothing like the one I had in my head while reading his words. That accent is supreme!
people aren't going to stop shopping because of a lack "spending time with family", "generosity", and "love", because there isn't a lack of any of those things. this woman has too many christmas specials. if people are going to stop consuming it will be because they will finally understand that they are being brainwashed by corporate ads and propaganda.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to treat yourself to a shopping spree, and buying a new pair of shoes. There is nothing wrong with buying your children toys for Christmas, and giving gifts to people. There's nothing wrong with enjoying some luxuries!
It's only "wrong" for lack of a better term, when people become obsessed with material objects. America has an extremely high consumption rate, yeah. Too high. But saying "people shouldn't buy anything" is making something out of nothing.
Shopping is a tradition? If it really is a tradition than it's a bad one and should be stopped. This woman is retarded and is obviously speaking on behalf of the the people she has sold out to, so it's not really surprising.

@lookatmepleasesir And this would come from the mind of a sexist. What makes you think women "demand" from their husbands. You are applying absolutes to something the media has taught you. People like you who generalize are the cause of the division of our society as well as the degression of equality.
@meench09 they demand from their husbands because if they don't get what they want the relationship is finished, and they certainly won't give their husband what they want. Women want to be provided for, stop denying biology. They want a home, they want jewelery, shoes and clothes, they want a car, etc
I live everyday like it's buy nothing day for the past 5 years now. As a result or this and ripping out my yard to put in a 1/2 garden and 200 sq foot greenhouse, I have reduced what I spend by an amount probably few Americans would find acceptable. The only thing I buy is food and bare bone necessities like gasoline, batteries and envelopes and such. Everything else is pretty much purchased 2nd hand at Goodwill, garage sales and Craigslist. I REFUSE to support Corporate America.
Hahah look at that poor naive left wing-hippie-dopesmoker from Canada. When will they all learn that no amount of sensible reasoning and sustenance could remove Our American Sense Of Grandiose Importance And Undeserved Power?! Don't they know that Our Coutry is the Messiah?!!
It has to start somewhere, CNN Lady. You don't need a fuckin' Elmo doll to listen to P-Funk.
What is wrong with this woman? Maybe she should have read a copy of Adbusters and acquired a better understanding of what they are about. Maybe then she would have asked a more legitimate or insightful question rather than the fluff questions she was asking.
it would be redundant to add another comment pointing out what an ignorant puppet that woman is, but reading this one page of comments i didnt notice anyone criticizing her interruption. atleast he got to be on cnn, even if they did pull all that bullshit. fuck off corporate pigs you'll get what you deserve!
Another point is the ease of credit in America versus elsewhere, leading to over consumption. Don't worry Adbusters, China is already at war with America, through it's deliberate undervaluation of the Yuan.
I think portraying people as pigs is condescending, and counterproductive. What this guy really needs to portray are the kind of macroeconomic reforms, such as effective inflation control, and realistic interest rates, which would naturally rein in consumption in a matter of course, without any unpleasant name calling. I wonder where he invests his money which he doesn't spend consuming? :)
"if somebody wants to buy their kid an Elmo doll, whats the problem with that?"
The problem is your 7 year old kid is happy, while an 8 year old kid in Indonesia is being beaten over and over again to build Nike shoes and Synthetic toys faster for 20 cents.
Woman asks simple questions that give Mr Lasn a chance to explain the idea behind the shopping-free day. Good questions. You have to think of people they are meant to be heard - too-much-shoppers, as ethically thinking TV-watchers surely knew all of it for a long time already.
her job is to dismiss and discredit him, otherwise they would have never had him speak on this show. she argues with him and forces him to look like an extremist and she appeals to the inherited american sentiment that to buy is to live.
Either this is the stupidest woman I've ever seen/heard, or she's just in denial, or...she's "wink wink, nudge nudge"...towing the network's 'party line' just for appearances, fully believing everything this man is saying, all the while saving her job.
considered war of rational arguments- " a dirty no-holds barred propoganda war of competing world views and alternate visions of the future...and then we work together to deploy them" - Kalle Lasn Adbusters #71
the woman is ignorant, it's ridiculous to have kalle lasn trying to have an intellectual conversation with a woman so widely and overwhelmingly misinformed. She represents the attitude, laziness and political apathy of the world we live in today. To start a cultural revolution we need fire, passion, outrage and a carefully
jesus fuck I raged at my computer whenever she interrupted him. what an in-denial bitch! of course she'll argue and interrupt because it threatens her rich way of life.
CNN & other "news" spend a lot of time conditioning people to spend , "black Friday " is now a holiday for spending .. get up early sheep for junk you don't need, and great example is people waiting in line for 12 16 24 hours for another gadget , when they won't wait 5 mins to vote .
How long do people keep phones , 1 year , 2 , 3 yrs Computers and other gadgets supposedly need replacing WHY bcs CNN says so , XYZ Co. says so get up early sheep spend spend spend .
If you guys know what the lent season is, its a 40 day period where you give up something before good friday on easter. I was to give up consumerism for lent in 2011, its not a relgious thing like many people think, I just want to make a difference. I won't buy anything for 40 days, only groceries and pay bills. If anyone has suggestions or questions, message me.
What ignorance, I thought she was completely disrespectful as an interviewer and completely ignorant to the views being presented to her. Rather than think about what he said, she immediately rejected his beliefs and let her own ignorance take over. Wow.
Wow, is that woman naive or what?? I'm speechless at the stupidness that comes out of her mouth! If she was in front of me right now, I think I would slap the shit out of her! Obviously she probably never spends anytime EVER in her life, to learn about what this planet is REALLY about. She probably spent her childhood watching TV... and her teenage reading seventeen and just a total TOOL of consumerism. The perfect example of the product society that capitalism wants... a bunch of TOOLS.
@pikakitty Do you ever try to agree with other people. You like like everyone else by basically calling every dissenting voice stupid. The reporter was right, she had to question what Kalle was saying in order for him to defend his point. She also had a point that people might change if they could see how issues affect them more, e.g. credit issues, not the children in India, b/c the Indian kids I see drive nice cars and aren't stepping anywhere close to a bicycle.
@pikakitty Yeah. Who needs another Elmo doll?? LOL The concept that we need to be buying lots of gifts all the time is very overrated. I love freecycle. :)
Am I the only one that thinks that this guy's ideas are way too radical? I mean consumption makes up 71% of our countries GDP. As if our country's economy wasn't bad enough.
@pingchu29 That's true, but the GDP is a horrible measure for economic progress. When the crime rates go up, the GDP goes up. When forests fall, the GDP goes up. Every time the third world is exploited or more pollution is added into the air the GDP goes up. So if the GDP is a measure of economic progress, it's a fair assessment to say that economic progress is killing the planet.
@xxKevzeppelinxx GDP is a measure of the economy's total output. To increase this, you don't necessarily have to exploit the environment even more. Increasing efficiency and reducing wasted material are ways in which a country can increase GDP without having drastic environmental consequences. Of course, this is easier said than done.
@xxKevzeppelinxx But it's a much better solution than everybody buying NOTHING during the holiday season which would result in skyrocketing unemployment across the country and, likely, a banking crisis and a plunge in the stock market. Also, I don't understand how an increase in GDP leads to an increase in crime rates.

@marjut88 What is the origin of famine in Somalia and other countries of Africa?
You contract yourself by saying that the world has limited resources and "there is enough food in the world to feed it 1.5 times.
Why do people die in hunger?
The main reason is US foreign policy that creates instability in countries that are a paradise.
Read the history of the Somalia and please be more consistent in your arguments.

@pikakitty I agree !!
She said :oh come on enviromental problems!? what s wrong with her?!?!
This kind of attitude makes me so feel so much anger and frustration ..
helena24680 1 year ago
@pikakitty Do you ever try to agree with other people. You like like everyone else by basically calling every dissenting voice stupid. The reporter was right, she had to question what Kalle was saying in order for him to defend his point. She also had a point that people might change if they could see how issues affect them more, e.g. credit issues, not the children in India, b/c the Indian kids I see drive nice cars and aren't stepping anywhere close to a bicycle.

Am I the only one that thinks that this guy's ideas are way too radical? I mean consumption makes up 71% of our countries GDP. As if our country's economy wasn't bad enough.
pingchu29 2 years ago
@pingchu29 That's true, but the GDP is a horrible measure for economic progress. When the crime rates go up, the GDP goes up. When forests fall, the GDP goes up. Every time the third world is exploited or more pollution is added into the air the GDP goes up. So if the GDP is a measure of economic progress, it's a fair assessment to say that economic progress is killing the planet.
xxKevzeppelinxx 2 years ago
@xxKevzeppelinxx GDP is a measure of the economy's total output. To increase this, you don't necessarily have to exploit the environment even more. Increasing efficiency and reducing wasted material are ways in which a country can increase GDP without having drastic environmental consequences. Of course, this is easier said than done.
pingchu29 2 years ago
@xxKevzeppelinxx But it's a much better solution than everybody buying NOTHING during the holiday season which would result in skyrocketing unemployment across the country and, likely, a banking crisis and a plunge in the stock market. Also, I don't understand how an increase in GDP leads to an increase in crime rates.
pingchu29 2 years ago
So its radical to prevent the destruction of our beautiful planet? Really? Then we should all become radical revolutionaries.
