  • can u also turn back to wii?

  • i have full debian on mine, lxde desktop thingy. amazing.

  • Linux on Wii?

MINECRAFT ON WII. (Lets hope the Wii doesnt crash due to RAM limitations)

  • @noobanimations2008 Screw RAM, the Wii has a ~800MHz processor that isn't even x86. The Wii would probably just explode.

  • @noobanimations2008 Minecraft won't run on the wii, as it has an ARM (Or powerPC maybe) processor and Java is x86 only.

  • so... I can get Linux on my wii, and then use it as a webserver/ssh server!? because then I could leave it on all the time. (my computer is sooo loud to have on while I sleep.)

  • @EviousProductions Yepp, it is possible. It is even a good idea. And there is a webserver software for wii as homebrew. You could use that for not having the trouble going through the installation of a Wiinux.

But I think the homebrew doesn't know about ssh. Well, back to topic, yes, the Wii can be a good SSH-/Webserver.

  • can u make a tortorial

  • how can u get that GUI?

i downloaded and installed whiitelinux but i only get the kernel ...

  • @TNG128MB I too don't know, but probabbly, sudo apt-get install fluxbox

    Sorry for the Bad English

  • link is broken

  • Can the Wii run PowerPC compatible Mac Os X?

  • @honam1021 nope

... Well atleast not with the vanilla kernel... You CAN recompile the dawinkernel for wii, then, OSX PPC should run on it. But you need a really old version, like 10.0 to 10.2 as the wii has really weak specs concerning ram, etc. OS 8/9 would run better, but I think, Apple won't give us the kernelsource. :C I am still waiting for Vmac to be ported or even sheepshaver! :3

  • @Bluedino549

I doubt there is enough interest in porting Darwin so maybe something like MacOnLinux or Sheepshaver's PPC Mac virtualization would be the best bet. Has anyone ever tried this with one of the Wii distros? Is either product even compatible with the PPC used in the Wii?

  • @tfgbd Well, in the end, it is the architecture that matters: PowerPC. The chip itself is rather of secondary interest to the software. The problem is that you have to find the sources of MacOnLinux or Sheepsaver as the precompiled binaries won't run for reasons like memoryaddressing, tweaks in the firmware (Obviously the Wii doesn't use the Mac's/PC's virtualizationmethods) and so on. Both M.O.L and Sheepshaver are openSource, so there's one mystery solved. Then, we need a compiler like gcc...

  • @tfgbd Lemme get my Wii, and I'll play around with this. It is not impossible but with about 64 or 96MB of RAM, things are gonna be slow... if we are lucky. Otherwise, it won't work at all. :D

  • Is it possible to play some PC games there? at a fair speed? That's cool, i'll probably install linux on my wii too

  • new links plzzz?

  • this looks like debian

  • @sebbeks it IS debian, just modified to run on the wii

  • @Zhen42 what type of processor is it? ppc? can it run mednafen and zsnes at full speed and support for USB gamepad (like sidewinder, my gentoo desktop supports it)?

  • @sebbeks The wii has few RAM. 48 MByte(?)

ZSNES would not run at full speed but a USB Gamepad would work. You can run Linux Software bein compiled for PowerPC but is could be painlyslow or even not startup as the Wii has way too few Memory.

  • i have whiite on my wii, but are there any special steps to install x11/x.org and a DE/WM or can i just apt-get them?

  • yay :D

  • mind making a how-to

  • Umm could u plz install a linux compatible starcraftt on it?

  • Yes it is lol they had it hacked inless than 24hrs after release :P

  • u using a mouse or the 'chuck?

  • is this xwhiite linux? or just white linux. because white linux is installed on my wii and its commandline

  • Depends on where you live in us it has recently been made legal, (as long as you are not stealing games) under one of the new D.m.c.a. exemptions . Installation and use of "unapproved" applications appears to have nothing to do with its interests as the owner of copyrights in the computer programs embodied in the Wii.

  • Cool. Is this legal? I heard some stories about homebrew software ...

  • @yetanothertubeuser Homebrewed software is all legal, the only thing illegal would be running ROMs of games that you don't own. Everything is legal here.

  • Seeing how this is based on Debian, does this mean you can install .deb packages? o_o

  • @OmegaVesko Yeah, you just need have to have PPC-compatible DEB packages. I'm pretty sure they do those, I think Ubuntu does.

  • @MaaveMaave Awesome, thanks. I'll definitely be checking it out then, maybe if I'm really lucky I'll get some Linux games to run on it. :D

  • First a Dreamcast, then a PS1, and now a Wii.

    Linux is amazing.

  • @gorillazhead Any OS can run on any HW the problem is usually getting it installed.

  • @gorillazhead Linux be sexy,

  • Woah... So awesome. Cool!

  • can you use a mouse with this?

  • MUGEN?

  • i cannot connect to the internet

  • Incredible.

  • Cool, je bent NL / BE!

  • Comment removed

  • @wrxsti111

    Yes

  • YOO! GTF outa here. linux an the Wii cannot co-exist. i searched dis as a joke. wow...amazing...

  • @danieldvs100

I know! Wii is a piece of shit!

  • @melandor0 The pair of you are both brainless.

  • @danieldvs100 No its real, you can install linux on a wii, infact you can play : Playstation games, N64 Games, Gamboy/Color/Advanced, Snes, Sega. Wii is awesome, it outsold both Xbox 360 and PS3.. I play movies from using the wireless connection on the wii, I can play anything thats on my computer downstairs.. You can even control your PC through the wii..

  • could you give me your Xorg config file? the X server keeps crashing when i load it. am i missing steps here or something? im using the MIKEp5 kernel with wifi support. if you could explain on to do it since the link is broken it would be very helpful.

  • you know we see linux on everything nowadays and its not that amazing anymore what i wanna see is running windows 7 on at least a ps3

  • @jonugokid ...but Windows sucks! (Unless it's XP) Besides, that's illegal.

  • @jonugokid Windows is pants. Linux is what WE make it. :)

  • omg how does linux work with all this crap?

  • @lemler33 Coding.

    If it's compatible, it'll work.

  • Respond to this video...what id like to see is a WINDOWS wii adaption that supports all the files a desktop windows could use, and file saving to an SD card (like a small compressed computer.) That way you could have endless fun modding your games, using emulators, and having a mini comp.

  • @TheLolWutBBQ There is a gentoo version of linux ported to the wii that adds more customization and speed to the concept.

  • i have tried over and over again to connect to the internet i type

    ./whiite-ez-wifi-config

    i have also tried

    cd /

    ./whiite-ez-wifi-config

    but nothing works

  • Nederlands FTW! :P

  • @TheLolWutBBQ ah, i could see that. thanks!

  • small question:

as this is running debian is it also possible to then install boxee and turn the wii into a media center running boxee this way?

  • Starts faster than my computer :p

Anyone know of a way to get it to run 100% off USB harddrives yet? (preferably without needing to add another partition)

  • any reports of a successful ubuntu load?

  • How usable is wii linux compared to PS3 linux? is the potential lack of RAM on the wii an issue?

Say my computer broke down and I needed something temporary to use, will Wii linux be useful? (because thats what I did with PS3 linux lol, but now they're removing the ability to boot linux on ps3, what a shame)

  • @9a3eedi Trust me, stick with the PS3 linux if you can.

In terms of CPU speed and RAM the PS3 destroys the wii.

CPU speed and RAM both play a big role in how functional and fast an O.S. is.

  • Hee hoe heb je da gedaan?, en kan dit ook op 4.2e?

  • does anyone have a link to the instructions used for this version of wii linux? i installed linux but all it is is like a DOS thing, not like this with a desktop and stuff

  • It's called a command line, you want the version that has a GUI! :)

  • so i fi do this i can get itunes on my wii?

  • @hello32232 No, but you can use a Linux music player

  • @hello32232 you may be able to run WINE

  • @stber321 I wouldn't recommend it. At all...

The Limited RAM and CPU speed of the wii pretty well prevent it from running any windows games.

Think about it: linux + wine + game???

    Its going to be slow.

You MIGHT be able to get something like age of empires or empire earth 1 or perhaps even the sims 1 to run on wine though. It will be slow but still....

  • can you run the dolphin emulator on wii linux?

  • :p

Maybe if the wii had a core i7 at 3ghz...

  • i got no idea what that means

  • that means, in order to run doplhin on a desktop you need a fast processor. my dual core 2.5 ghz can barely handle the gamecube, and full speed and stable emulation of a wii game is even more demanding. I don't know what resources linux requires on a wii, but i would bet it uses almost the full processor. so, the wii's 729 mhz CPU does not really stand a chance. unless you somehow swapped it with a core i7. (which can run pretty flipping fast)

  • yes the procesor of wii is bad the specifications you said are good :p

  • Thats pretty much it.

  • @sithwalrus do u install this becuz i dont want to ruin my wii

  • have you tries install gnome/KDE/XFCE (apt-get install ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu-desktop)

  • yes i have

  • how did you get the gui to work mine boots to the command line

  • same lol:P um does any one know to get the gui working? with kernal image? i just get a command line:(

  • type startx, if you don't want it to do that you will have to edit some configuration files to set to run level 5, I don't recommend doing that though.

  • broken link

  • Use Google is soo difficult! :P

  • Heyy

Heb je iets over hoe je de wii ombouwt?

  • i have got an idea.if linux kan run on wii,can games theat run on linux run on wii?(half-life)

  • dunno if the wii is fast enbough

  • It can pass the System requirements though

  • @msvideogame I think half-life for linux requires an x86 processor and the wii has a power-pc based processor. It probably won't run on a wii.

  • depends on OS compatibility and the hardware of the wii and the needed drivers and things like DX9 and steam

  • i would doubt it my friend.

  • they have to get compiled under a wii first .

  • that would slow I guess..

  • Great, now all I need is a Solaris version and im set.

Kudos to those that worked on this project, you deserve the credit.

  • Well, holy crap. That's CRAZY.

  • how do you get the GUI?

  • automaticaly. its like ubuntu live cd (or any other live cd distro)

  • wat sort of stuff can you actually do on linx on the wii

  • ich habe jetzt whiite auf meiner wii. aber wie bekomme ich das so hin wie du

  • wie viel speicher verbraucht das?

  • hmm just wondering, are you able to stream youtube and stuff with wii linux, and what version of flash?

  • I got linux running on my wii using "boot it"

it looks the same as yours, but mine doesn't have firefox yet, any help?

  • iceweasel=firefox

  • I know .. hello? sarcasm? -.-

  • take that windows xD

  • those arent windows...its linux.

  • ... "Take That windows"

    he/she's not saying that's windows.

    quite the contrary.

  • is it seriously possible to go on mozilla firefox!!!

  • i completely disapprove of piracy but there is nothing wrong with simple homebrew like this. the wii is extremely fun to hack i recommend everyone to do it

  • hay if i install this will i still be able to use my wii

  • as you can see, he runs it from the wii homebrew channel

    Yes.

  • dude can you tell me how to do this xwhiite said stuff that dnt make sense to me it was really annoying can you check out java+runescape im not checkin it out unless i know it works first

  • For the persons who want to know how to port linux to actually anything, go to here:

    linuxporting . blogspot . com

  • Just out of curiosity, what's the point of this? Is there really a practical application for running linux on the Wii hardware, or do people just find it fun to hack a Wii?

  • other than to play dvds, listen to ipradio, play mp4,mp3,jpg fiffo,

playing all the games u want off a sd card,

its the joy of using something for what it wasnt meant to be used, and contributing to ideas of developing future technology-- haxors rule!

  • Seriously!! Yesterday i decided i wanted to hack my wii and I've never done anything like that and it was a success!!

  • I think it's just for the fun of hacking.

  • Yep it is fun to hack the wii! :)

  • There is no real practical value to running linux on a wii vs lets say a home computer. The value comes in that it will allow for future homebrew items to use this technology.

For example when the Twilight Princess exploit was found the only real homebrew was a tetris clone. But because that type of information was released we now have an entire Wii homebrew community of developers

And yes it's just fun to run hacks because it shows that no cooperation can beat simple creativity and ingenuity.

  • They find it fun. Its a diversion/challenge.

  • is the linux full functionality or just a beat?

  • does regular whiite have a gui? or do i need xwhiite? how do i install xwhiite?

  • xwhiite is way easier to use in my opinion

  • oh, i got it. that was a really long time ago. i ended up installing xwhiite, but i thought it was waaaay to much trouble to mess with. they should try and make it in to a single app you dont have to install on to the sd card.

  • some say you have to run linux on your computer to install linux for Wii

  • Now you can, find from tehskeen topic Reload this Page xwhiite-linux 0.1 there is my message how you can install it on windows :)

  • thats stupid. it has nothing to do with the computer. you just put the files in the correct folder on your sd card, load up the homebrew channel, and install linux. simple as that

  • hey can I extract all the files in the root folder on the sd card?

  • can you send me all directory that i need for it pls???? my arnt workin........:(

  • It does not work for me.What do I have to do?

  • will this run programs that compatitable with linux?

  • yes, it'll run anything compiled in PPC, which is a lot. if those happen to not work, you have to manually compile every program yourself but if you were to compile something like Wine then you could get windows programs working on wii

  • Ow ja ik weet al wat ik ga doen=)

  • Can you conect to internet via Wi-Fi?

  • Not yet, the drivers to work with the Wi-Fi chip aren't there yet, bet it will be eventually, just be patient.

  • can i run fedora on it ?

  • not currently. even if you did, the wii is not powerful enough for such an operating system

  • then i have np use for it :D

  • Why wouldnt it be powerfull enough to run linux? linux takes like no space and can be used on a really old computer with the worst ram, harddrive, grafic card etc...

  • Art2Fly Linux can work on everything, and the wii isnt a exception...

  • nederland! :P

  • e per uscire da quest modalita come si fa?

  • Okai, so i installed it, and kinda works( seriously to make partitions and rename them...what is wrong with gparted, the terminal is a scary thing for beginners like me...although i did use some commands)

However my Screen isn't correct, the toolbar/panel is just out of screen and text and images make my eyes bleed because its all ....shaking?

I tried both RGB and standard cable.

Does anyone know why my screen resolution is off?

    Also Add Wine! =P

  • Also some things come out very pink on screen...

  • how do u install it

  • You need Linux.

All you have to do is setup 2 partitions on your SD card. Gparted can help you out with this. Setting up lable, not sure though. i did that with the terminal.

All you have to do is copy the files being the root.

It's kinda easy, there are instructions if you click the link in the "more info" on the right.

Maybe you can use a live cd of Ubuntu or Mint, both are linux distro's.

  • so i need linux to install this i havent gt linux :( and what you mean by gparted and partitions ?? reply bk

  • You can use a live CD, you just put it in your PC and it it will load up Linux. You dont have to worry about your current installation. It will be loaded in the RAM.

Then you use a program like gparted to setup the partitions on your SD card. See them as sectors/parts of your harddisk that are differently formatted. linux uses EXT2/3 windows uses NTFS. but you need FAT and EXT 2 or 3.

search for Ubuntu download it and burn it to a CD. boot it and follow the instructions.

    Its free =).

  • It might be the best Linux Distro for Wii, yet.

  • look for miight ;) bertjan is combining his distro with ours.

  • oh yeah, it isn't out yet tho. it'll be out in about 5 weeks.

  • Okay, thanks in advance.

I am a real Linux fan.

  • nope its out now iv done it i will make a tutorial on how to do it xD i be the first 1 to actually make a tutorial on Linux on wii

  • I like the way the english words are hyphonated. Wii-menu.

  • Hi. I need Help.

where can I change the setting for the Internet instantly. thanks

  • shweetness. I needs to do this!

  • i got a question if i install linux on my wii can i still play wii games?

  • yes itsinstalled in the homebrew channel on an sd card not on your wii

  • thanks for the help!

  • I got it working, but I don't see the toolbar on mine that I see on yours at the bottom, the desktop and every thing else works though :). Can you tell me how to enable to toolbar you have and how to put shortcuts on the desktop?

  • Can you play (small) games on it?

  • wow .. wii with bluetooth??

    very cool .. I WANT IT !! =P

  • Also if you have your wii connected to an HDTV/Monitor will it out put in HD resolutions.

  • afaik the wii doesnt support usb hdds at this time. you can use sd cards or usb sticks though.

the wii doesnt support full hd, but if you buy a component caple for the console you can use the 480p output. i hope this helps you

  • Yeah, but I was assuming homebrew would open these features. Especially when you are running a whole different OS. Also doesn't component support up to 720p? That means there should be a way that homebrew allows that too. Though that could be restricted by the hardware. I know that the USB HDD is possible though, eventually even if they didn't make any support for it yet.

  • Does it support usb HDDs?

  • lawl Nederlands ?

  • Guess what I'm doing this weekend? :P

    0:-)

    Awesome stuff man.

  • When I try to load it, it sais I need I username and password. What is it?

  • ahh, I found that package, never mind about earlier.

    !!!!

  • Looks great!

I have Debian/Whiite 0.1a and kernel 2.6.27b-isobel-wii right now its just I don't know where to get your xorg 7.1 GUI for the wii, is there a working progress project release? I've been looking for the package and couldn't find it.

I can what for the final release.

  • can't wait*

  • what would you use that for exactly? cause its not like the wii has a keyboard or anything and so it would be really hard to surf the net without one?
