This and the Smiley Smile version are like completely different songs. It's like looking at the song concept from two totally different angles. Both are friggin' spectacular! I could float away with the Smiley Smile version or jam out to the SMiLE version with equal enthusiasm!
@milkmilkmilk17 thats an interesting opinion, i think the smiley smile version is charming in its own way, but i love the big marching chorus to this version
When you hear this it's ridiculous to think they left it languishing ahead of that pile of junk that came out on Smiley Smile. One of the great oddities of musical history. The same goes for all the Smile stuff finished or not.
@Vincecouk - Pile of junk? No way! The version on Smiley Smile is probably one of the greatest psychedelic recordings of all time (and the last 40 seconds or so is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard)...I like both versions.
@DarknessHowls yes, pile of junk. I hate the Smiley Smile stuff for signalling the decline of Brian, and for how dashed off and shoddy it sounds next to the actual 'production' that Brian was driving at with the Smile sessions.
@Vincecouk - I disagree. Smiley Smile isn't SMiLE, but it's a good album in its own right. The lazy, hazy atmosphere of it is what is best about it...in my opinion, at least.
@Vincecouk Decline of Brian my ass. Are you one of those people who still hold the tired notion that he "went to bed" immediately after SMiLE, ignoring Wild Honey, Friends, half of 20/20, Sunflower, and Surf's Up?
as a beach boy fan, I dont think they ever were the same band afer the Smile debacle. The post release albums led to their becoming a caricature of themselves.
@olhobbler that's a pretty odd thing for a beach boys fan to say. a lot of their post-Smile albums contains some of the best music they (as a group) ever did, and the majority of it is better than pretty much anything anyone else was doing. at least up until Love You. anything after Love You can sleep in mike love's asshole
Such a clean, pure sound .. BW's falsetto & overall range of voice is still superb here .. despite all that smoking over the years. And yep .. that little section at 2.34 to 2.53 is the best 19 seconds of avant-garde instrumental music I've ever heard .. even to this day in 2011.
@icampos89 I agree it's Carl singing this one and his voice is sweeter, and I also believe Carl was a better overall singer compared to Brian. However, there is something very special about Brian's inflection, his pitch and way around the structure of the words, which none of his brothers or cousins could match. Just an opinion.
Can't you all just stop arguing which version is better and be happy that we get two versions?

@milkmilkmilk17 that's one weird preference. To me there is no comparison.

@colindominy Carl Wilson is singing this one. He had a sweeter voice than Brian IMHO.

@gerrytowns it is Carl, however Brian could equal Carl on a tune like Wonderful (Smile vers) or Surf's Up.
