lol.....you know, dan, those were my exact thoughts when I saw this video and saw your tag. Damn, you have some cool friends!....and Ron is such a sweet, wonderful man. You must've had a great day that day.
Done some reading on him. He's from WV. Wonder if he's ever played any of the really old Appalachian balads on his lute. Georgie comes to mind. goes back to the 17th century at least and is still sung in the mountains by descendants of English settlers. would be cool to hear it on a renaissance lute:
Custer Larue is the soloist, a very talented soprano from rural Bath county in the Shenadoah valley Virginia. She also was the singer for the Baltimore Consort. She uses the consort as her back-up. Ronn Mc Farlane was also one of the founders of the consort. This CD was what introduced me to those ballads. It is more polished than Jean Ritchie but these
First piece reminds me of something Barrios would've written. I'm a guitarist. I mean this as a very high compliment to his music and playing. 2nd piece is thrilling, thoroughly modern and is clearly a fusion of many modern influences. I'm reminded of banjo picking, fiery folk mandolin, and a folksy quality that is so very much alive and of the here and now. All of it comes together in his playing and his wonderful instrument. Love the harmonics too. I'm simply blown away. Wow.
Nice to hear some new music played on the lute, and I didn't know it is possible to play harmonics that loudly on a lute. The first piece had a medieval feel to it, somehow.
A very beautiful and serene 'peace' indeed. Godspeed.

On the lute? Does he have someone singing them or is it all instrumental?

It's sad to see someone try so hard to construct beauty on a lute that is choked in tonal and resonant response.
