i still miss paul and wonder just how much more he would have accomplished, he was truly a genius of his time a kind gentle souls and a pure crack up to have fun with, bloody hester-ical... thanks nzoz you are truly inspirational with your postings, your channels provide a link to oz music that is truly a bonus to all listeners of a generation where aussie artists were peaking in so many areas, thanks cheers ike :))
@MegaDRjohn no worries and thank you for the kind words... they'll be MORE!!! trust me! exciting days will be coming! PAUL HESTER IN 1980! I wont name the clip! It will be up!
Brilliant - I mean who needs to use botox to feel young again when with one click on the `oznz..` pages I am teleported back to my high school days (sigh). Thank you sir
Yeah, it probably is better to talk to your friends and whoever than bottle it all up and struggle on your own. I know it sounds corny, but even in the darkest times (and we've all had 'em) there is always the possibility that it will pass and you'll come to another good time in life. But I would never, ever judge anyone who felt that they couldn't see that possibility coming along for them again. It's very real when it lands on you and you can't see a way out. So talk when you need to, OK!
I always drop this song when I dj. The kids don't know what to make of it. It sounds like it could have been produced any year between 1979-2009. Incredibly bare and intuitive bass-playing, great guitar sound, catchy vocals. And outta there in 2.30 mins. Classic pop! Loved it the first time I heard it and still love it.
I didn't know him closely, in fact, and it's many years ago now, but it didn't entirely surprise me. And of course so many people hide so much pain every day through life, don't they?
yeah, kinda puts things into perspective for me personally. when i'm pissed, i let it show... infact, a lot of my feelings show, but most times I'm pretty happy. Now looking at Hester and what you said about those that hide pain, I kinda think that maybe it's not so bad to let it show or at least speak about it.
I found something the other day in my house that Paul gave me some years ago - a drum skin of his. He'd written on it too - very sad feeling to see it and his writing still around when he's not.
thanks for posting this, whoever put this video up... I knew Paul ages ago and it's lovely but also very sad to see him on video all these years later looking the way he was back then...
Fantastic. Love this. The 4 track EP it was on is a favourite and one day when I get back to Melbourne, I am going to pump it up. The singer's voice (John Clifford?) is distinctive and the tracking on the vocals must have been hell to record. And Cathy Green, ex-Ears bass player. So, what's the story? What happened to Deckchairs and everyone in them (!) since? The Paul Hester story is tragic. And everyone else?
Hey I vaguely remember seeing this clip on Countdown a few times, also on that Sat morning music show before MTV. Hosted by Donnie Sutherland but I can't remember the name of the program??? Saw them live in the 80s at what is now the Metro in Sydney, where are all the good live bands nowadays?
tyvm for posting this. this was a fave from that amazing burst of very distinct and original dance music that cam from australia in the early to mid eighties. sad only JJJ played this stuff. a little too left of centre for brain dead commercial radio :(((
ps i gave a vague recollection that several of the band were solicitors or had legal profession jobs
NZOZ1983 yes I didnt read your original comment and i wasnt sure it was Paul Hester - thanks for confirming this. Be proud that your family is part of Australian music history rather than reminding me that i didnt read the detail!
Marc, I know it's been a month since you posted that comment, but man... how could you not know it's Paul Hester when I've written that in the description that it is him?
Another band gone too soon while Bieber and Adele rule the airways

Donnie Sutherland show was 'Sounds' and the clip Sounds played was the official clip - not this one that was made by Countdown.
I know Donnie - he helped me with another account/channel I have titled 'welovedonnie' which features clips from SOUNDS and After Dark.

Nobody in my family is part of the music industry. I'm the only one who associates myself with music and some parts of the industry.
That's why I worry when people don't read detail... joking ;)

REALLY cool drumming; guess who moves onto bigger things.
The song and clip are competent; but Hester is clearly man of the match.
