  • why is it that people think learning from a master is important? when I hear music once i dont need to hear it again... there are so many possibilites! why no have an open mind and let the imagination create!? all it takes is an open mind. nobody likes hearing covers.

  • It is funny how people seem the regard the sitar as some mystical otherworldly device. It is an instrument people, play it however the fuck you want.

  • Very clearly, this lady has very little or even no knowledge about the power of Sitar. You seem to have not yet realized the power of the instrument you are holding in your hands. Moreover, the instrument is in no doubt OUT OF TUNE.

If you are so interested in playing guitar go to a master and learn it. If you continue, you will earn disrespect not only to yourself but also to the great instrument.

  • @sunilanandatheertha well.... at least she's showing interest in the culture. ofcz she's no ravi shankar but shes not totally disrespecting anything either. its music.

  • *drugs were involved in the making of this film

  • marglar

  • She was born on a Planet known as Meep ,or at least that's the closest translation

  • quite disrespectful to the instrument. she isnt sitting down properly, and is playing it dismally incorrectly and out of tune. the years of tradition that make a sitar player a truly good sitar player are being trivialized by this womans perfomance, and making a bad name for sitar to western audiences.

  • @GatoradeIsNotJuice

some people play differently than others. it's not a big deal

  • @Schbopo it's a matter of respect for the instrument

  • ALIEN!

  • Can anyone tell me if that was a standard size sitar or 3/4?

  • Drag Queen's insane

  • She does have electronic stuff for her Sitar a lot of times, that can make the sound very weird! I have been playing a little on a seven string learner's Sitar ! She's non traditional for sure! She picks with her thumb & index finger, where a traditional Sitar player would keep their thumb close to the instrument at all times & pluck only with their index finger.

  • picks with her thumb...

I guess it's still trippy for all the hippys...

this is not indian music though..

  • OMG I just saw her today i LOVE her!!!!!

  • She bends the string and the tuning changes slightly. If you want to say it's out of tune, you're being a little anal.

  • people please... you can tune the sitar to your style of play. everyone has a different style unless they are "copying" a set style. I've never heard of anyone STRICKLY saying you MUST have a sitar set to this style.

  • Comment removed

  • there is not set way to tune a Sitar... EVERYONE has a there own style and way of tuning UNLESS they are following a certain style like Ravi Shankar's Classical..

  • its a raga ,,and thats what its all about ,,enjoy

  • I like that it's out of tune. Sounds trippy.

  • It's out of tune for sure, but she does seem to tune it like that on purpose! She does seem to know what she's doing! She's not really playing classical Indian tunes,so she has slightly "Unusual" tuning because she's more into the sitar sound then trying to play any ragas on it!

  • hmmm...i don't see why people care if shes out of tune or not...still sounds pretty fucking cool

  • Go Gabby!!!

  • daughter of yoko ono and aliens

  • lol

  • no doubt

  • xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • @Vincestrummer ......daughter of a greek godess and cotton candy

  • @Vincestrummer ......daughter of a hindu godess and cotton candy

  • her hair and her sitar are both out of tune

  • Her sitar is in an alternate tuning, but it's not out of tune.

But yes, her hair is a bit out of tune.

  • Oh you crazy person, it really IS out of tune. Whatever tuning it's in doesn't excuse the fact that all the sympathetics AND the chikaris are like 7 cents lower than the main strings. Gives me the willies.

  • No, her sitar is out of tune too. I play, and this is terrible

  • Yup, out of tune. While there is no "set" tuning for a sitar, there is a set of relationships the strings should have to each other and a few different conventions of the different styles of tuning. Ms. Lala's "tuning" is unfortunately just way off, and doesn't make any sense. While she's playing a sitar, she is not playing Indian music. Maybe that is the main point of contention. This is like if I played Gimme Shelter on my own sitar- Not Indian, so no point in pretending.

  • go listen to the shankars they're always in tune..dont slag gabby tho she's cool as fuck and if she's good enuff for the "les claypoools fancy band" then she'll do for me too..and the lp is joyous--why did the chicken cross the ro-o-o-ad?i guess we'll never kno--o-o-ow :-)

  • wow... ummmmm that was... interesting...

Why she have blue hair?? o_O

sorry not trying to be rude XD

    sorry

  • You should see my hair. It's an even crazier blue.

  • scaryyy

  • ごめん、マジでこれ聞いてられない。

    1秒以上聞けない。

    マジ無理。

    しかも何?このラムちゃんばりのヅラ

    she's insane

  • その気持ちわかる。Lesやバケットヘッドと共演してる人と聴いて私もチェックしたけど、余りにも酷すぎる。

    別にyoutubeだけで判断してはいないし。マジで無理。

  • Wow !...That was BAAAD !! LOL

  • i can play sitar better than her!

    haha

  • lets see your video then, this is not even close to what she is capable of doing

  • She is a Guitar Player thinking that the SItar is like the Guitar...

She will never be able to play the sitar the way it was meant to be played without learning Taal and Raag.

  • maybe she doesn't want to. I would imagine Gabby is doing a lot better than most shitarists out there.

  • Wow, too bad her sitar is completely out of tune and she has clearly not studied Indian music for one second of her life... Oh well.

  • Why you such a cunt? Quit hating, she's good at what she does. And yes we western people do understand a sitar, it's a goddamn instrument that's sounds fucking badass. So quit hatin'!!!

  • I've actually spoken to her, and she has studied Indian music at the Ali Akbar College of Music.

And there is no set tuning for a sitar. Just like on guitar, some people prefer open C major over Standard, or Nashville over Dropped D.

And to banabaconcake and Periclytos, The loud crack was the sitar, she hit a note, it was off, and she tuned it.

  • western people can't understand sitar..

  • she sucks no raag at all..

  • she has a good tune goin there - too bad she plays it like a guitar =(

  • she's no virtuoso, but listen to the tracks on her record. they're incredible. she's not trying to make music incoporating some astonishing mastery of any instruments. she uses a few to make these beautiful, odd, psychedelic pop songs.

  • Here's the thing...if she's so bad at playing why is she playing with Les? Or doing major shows? You all sit in judgment while your garage bands go nowhere and never will all the while posting comments from your parents basement. Then again I doubt most of the people posting comments can even play any insturment for that matter. It's pretty easy to be a critic, but to do what gabby has done? none of you will ever achieve what she has...so just keep posting your comments.

  • u might be still in a garage band but ive already got an album in the maikng with epic records

  • Just because she's played with Les Claypool, it doesn't improve her playing in any way. She is terrible, at best. Also, just because she has appeal doesn't mean that she's any good! All you have to do is look at gimicky shit on MTV to see that style always wins over substance. And for your information: yes I can play the sitar. Don't mistake lack of fame for lack of talent, cum-stain. There are millions of great musicians who are entitled to call this shit

  • ya she sucks...i play sitar in a metal band, ill show her a sitar solo

  • wow your pretty stupid, so many metal bands use a sitar like dream theater and nevermore, steve vai... maybe it is you that is gay and your in denial

  • dont forget metallica

  • Well, that wasn't actually a sitar on Wherever I may Roam, it was an effect added on his bass. But you have a point IT SOUNDED LIKE A SITAR! THAT MAKES IT A SITAR!!!

  • Kirk Hammett used an electric sitar for that riff.

  • My bad hte loud crack during the intro is the bass. Guess I should read up on my stuff before I speak.

  • Haha, no problem. I thought that effect sounded a bit too much like a sitar.

  • i think your right

  • At first I wanted to call you a jealous faggot, but after thinking about it that's just badass.

  • what a disgrace!

  • this is no good

  • As fans we have all tolerated Les Claypool's ups and downs, because we love his creativity. He has always done a fine job of finding like-minded musicians to play with, as well as musicians with great talent. This one, however, I do not understand. He obviously sees something we do not, perhaps it is not coming across like he planned. If she doesn't work on her chops and improve, I would like to suggest he drop her. Les, you are only as strong as your weakest link... i.e.- your Gabby La La.

  • god! this is awful

  • she ain't no sitar player...i'd like 2 teach her though

  • I jst learned how to play..i can tell you first hand that its the most fun i have ever had with a stringed instrument!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • But can you play an Indian Raga?

  • oh man, I love sitar, I wish I could play!

  • awesome

  • Damn i want a sitar now!

  • This hurts my ears...

  • ive been playing sitar for about 20 years and i can tell you that this performance is only average. there is nothing extraordinary happening, but nothing to insult either. just nothing to talk about at all. some chick-like creature with a sitar that can play it as well as someone who owns an insturment should at least be able to do.

  • yeah man i could learn to do what she does in one day tops

  • I didn't know Elton John played sitar.

  • LMAO. Good one mate.

  • i am amazed at how she wears that around her neck, it's hard enough to play it sitting down.

  • Despite a sitar's huge size, they're actually fairly light instruments, due to the hollow gourd the body's made of and the neck also being hollow.

  • the music is pretty ok. and thats a good thing, its not the negitive pretty ok, rather the positive pretty ok, but the only comment i have on her solo is that it should be played sitting down and stuff, looks more hard core, u know... anyways keep up the good work gabby

    -MW

  • I LOVE Gabby!! OMG! She's so amazing! Thanks for posting this!!

  • wow she was good.. but she looks like a hawaiian who fell in kool-aid..

  • That wasnt meant to sounds racist.

  • it did.. what did you mean by it exactly?

  • I have a hard time believing the whole costume/wig thing, but yeah shes pretty badass. Got to meet her in St. Louis a week after Wak and shes pretty down to earth and not as chinese as everyone thinks.

  • gabby lala is pretty rule

  • haha best comment i ever read and yes gabby is very very good

  • If you two jerkoffs would have actually seen this performance or appreciated good music you would realize she is an amazingly talented artist...and have you ever tried to play a sitar? I can tell you from experience you have to be incredibly talented to pull damn near anything off on one of those things....Gabby Rocks you Mom you lil Bitches...

  • It takes talent to just tune the dang things! There are over 50 standard tunings for them and the frets move! These kids probably have Squiers and a bullet amp, playing smoke on the water wrong! Mom yelling, turn that down! Peace.

  • this isssss

    veryvery true

  • lmfao...... o.o

  • correction to my comment she WASN'T wearin an earpiece. all she was wearin was a kickass wig and hat i made!i've had a few drinks-and just joined youtube like 2 secs ago!

  • okay Primatein and HSTbodacious-you guys suck some serious dick! I am a good friend of Gabby's and I made her costume in this clip(and costumes for Les' set). Her music is all her own, and she was wearin a fuckin earpiece! you guys are probably the same losers who are whinin on the primus bullboard, jackin off and poppin pimples in their parents bassments. GET A LIFE!

  • If this is true, Nice Work!!! I'm a recient fan of Gabby. I just saw here perform with Les' fancy band here in Florida. I was blown away, she's amazing. I only wished they had let her solo more. Hopefully she'll come back soon. If you DO know her, twist her little arms until she is forced to come back.

  • She wouldnt have an album if it werent for Les

  • Gabby is les' bitch. She does he wut he tells her too, and nothing more. I bet he told her to do that solo, prolly had an ear piece on and he was tellin her every note to hit.

  • Nice video! Gabby rocks!
