How I would have loved to have seen Nat in person. They don't make singers like this anymore. This song along with "Can't I?" and "Are you Disenchanted?" are my favorites. With the passing of Nat, Frank, Dino, Ella, and Mel, there are no more crooners. Sad.
This song will always be an ageless song that will be loved by all. When we compare this to todays music, somebody needs to go back to music school. My mother-in-law always said that pre rock in roll music was the best jazz, comtmpary etc. Guess what... she was right.
This song makes you stand still and bask in the soothing energy and wonder of it all ...Nat, the musicians, the background singers...ahhhhh...Just takes you away. Nat King Cole was a gift from the heavens.
3 dislikes? Did Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber and 50 Cent feel intimidated??? lol
The world is full of jesters, clowns (see above), and pretenders. There is, and always will be, only one "King." Nat, your voice will forever remain one of life's great blessings.

Such intimate words making up a wonderful song. I love to sing along and then I get choked up.......well....god bless you Mr. Cole. You'll always be one of a kind:)
Thank you for sharing this wondeful song. I haven't listened to Nat King Cole for quite awhile. I have missed his beautiful voice. Now I am playing this daily!
Nat King Cole reached the summit on this song! He was a fabulous singer period; everything he did was beautiful. Like a lot of other people, this, too, is my favorite Nat King Cole song. Absolutely perfect in every way. Thank you for a special post.
@edvonw This is really true. I'm amazed that the smoking never seemed to affect his unique and so very beautiful voice. I'm always amazed when I see singers smoking. Operatic baritone Robert Merrill, on the Tonight Show, once polished off an aria, sat down next to Carson, and lit up a cigarette. Carson did the biggest doubletake I've ver seen, and said, YOU SMOKE?!. Smoking apparently didn't affect Merrill's voice either. Nobody should take up smoking though, Nasty, dangerous habit.
@arpeggio1358 Nat's voice was indeed affected by his cigarette smoking. After '62 his voice took on a harsh raspiness. His voice took on about 3 different "versions between '48 and '64.
This is one of my very favorite songs. I remember it over the transistor radio under the covers, when I was supposed to be asleep. It will never get old to me.
Whe you see a posting from our younger genaeration about one of our generations great standards it makes you feel so good. Many of our old standards hold old baggage but to see our youth appreciate our music just for its own merit it's fantastic.
Many aspire to be the "King," but there is only one Nat Cole. Cole and Frank Sinatra were two giants that we will not see the likes of again. In my opinion, this is the equivalent of Frank's rendition of "Moonlight in Vermont." Both songs take you to a magical place...
I have counted this song amongst my all time favorites since it was first introduced to us. My 48 yr old son called me last week to tell me he'd just discovered a great NKC song - it was this one. I love it when that happens as it often does! Us older folks were onto something & this remains one of my favorites of all time.
@Bo618 It's like the Gettysburg Address, short, profound & to the point, earnestly! How many remember the names of the other speakers, aside from Mr. Lincoln? This song will too, stand the test of time!
Simply exquisite! My favorite Nat King Cole song....sweet and breezy. I had a 45 of this song... as a 14 year old.... when this melody arrived at the record stores. Beautiful voice, great lyrics. Too bad most of today's music lacks such substance.
Without a doubt this is my very favorite Nat King Cole song. Listening to All Things Considered this afternoon and they did a segment on him, which I immediately had to hunt this song down. Thank you so much for posting this. Sigh.
Fantastic orchestration - doubling acoustic bass and tuba, use of a uke, and marvelous strings and chorus. The brushwork alone is so fine. I mean, you just can't praise this arrangement enough, man. Nat was indeed one of the most gifted artists of the 20th century, and he will always own this great song, among many others. Thanks for such a great, clear post, direfranchement!
is that a uke..or a banjo...i thought it was a banjo...i love it whatever it is..great choice of instrument ..who arranged this track? doesnt sound like nelson riddle
This man paved the way for all of today's young black stars. What saddens me is, as a person as white as they come, how little my neighvors of color know about their past and the plight of those that went before them. Nat included! Here you have arguebly the finest perforner of our lifetime and beyond and they don't seem to hear anything but Rap! Well, That Day, That Sunday, That Summer may never come for them! So let we oldtimers remain united and enjoy America's finest! Mr. Nat King Cole!
Not heard That Sunday for over 30yrs ,takes me back to 64" i met my first proper boy friend at 17 on a Sunday it was our song. Wonder what Rods doing now?
This has to be my all time favourite of Nats and I know my father liked this very much. Thankyou so much for posting and to all Youtubers who take the time and trouble to post all this stuff for everyone else to wallow in... Thanx for the memories from someone in England.....
Gorgeous song ... from Mr. Romance ... but truth is ... If I had to choose one moment ... just one moment to live within my heart ... it would be ... it would be ... wait wait ... can it be 2 moments? ... 3 moments? ... darn darn , I'm confused now ... too many good moments ... close your eyes, will ya? ... (smiles)
This is one of NKC's best ever. Kudos to you direfranchement for posting it. If you had the recording, I wish you would also post Nat's version of "The End of A Love Affair" from around the same time. Together they are like book ends on the subject of love.
I have been hearing this song more often while shopping in various stores. I really miss Nat King Cole. He was at the top of his talent when he was taken from us. What a Star.
Natalie Cole also does a superb version of this song on her "Unforgettable" Album. Both versions are very remarkable. This song has such a nostalgic feel to it.
I like Natalie's version a little better, perhaps because it's a little more laid back, the guitar or ukelele or whatever string instrument that is playing the chord progression isn't nearly as intrustive, but mixed well in the background.
Nat King Cole was often referred to as "the best friend a song ever had". It would be hard to disagree with that. A really pretty song that always reminds me of a time when life was a little slower and much more simple - still have my original Capitol 45 RPM with the classy yellow and orange swirl label design.
Learning this song right now, and it is harder than I thought, although Nat make's it all sound so easy. Some of the best vocals and backing vocals are so clean and pure and just beautiful!
This encourages me vocally and personally. Thanks for posting!
Talented beyond what should be allowed for one person. There has been plenty written and reported about his musical ability, I wish there was a movie or monument to his bravery. Nat live with death threats constantly as well as overt acts of hate against him and his family at their own home. He was truly a great talent and a great American hero.
I love this song just as President Kennedy loved it. I think of the peace and tranquility of the early 1960s. I think of the optimism and hope. When I hear this song, I think of the touch of class that Jackie and Jack had along with Michelle and Barack.
In my opinion, the Cole's were truly the first African American Royal family of the 50's. As a child I remember reading various magazines about the family, and pictures of their beautiful home. I heard that Nat and Maria Cole had a lavish wedding in Harlem fit for a king and queen. Their daughter, Natalie and siblings had a rich lifestyle. Thanks for posting this song and such a nice picture of her mom and dad.
though i was only 7 years old, the Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was numero uno at the time. I love Nat dearly, but the "British invasion" was well underway and the Beatles had taken America by storm, That Summer That Sunday... and the rest is, well, history.
Geez, suddenly I'm back in the summer of 64. What a great time to be young and carefree. My parents adored Nat and so do I. That was indeed a very special summer.
I love this song. It was popular the summer before my senior year in HS. My friends and I would wait for it to come on the radio, turn the volume, and sing along. Nat's song made that a memorable time.
This song holds a special meaning for me for it was on a Sunday that I met that special person. Listening to this I remember every moment of that young love. Thanks for posting.
I've been waiting for this item to be posted. thank you very much, direfranchment, for doing so. This song moves along at a measured. liesurely pace, but tells its story with great eloquence. In fact, it's difficult to listen to this and NOT have the feeling that it's summertime, all over again, and it's always a joy to hear NKC's mellifluous delivery.
Well, it may be rather pessimistic of me, but as far as I can see, the best music has already been made. It would be a shame to go through life not having at least sampled. This is one of my favorite recordings of his and when I noticed it wasn't posted, I seized the opportunity. Hope you enjoy it :)
I was in Capitol studios where this song was recorded and was asked by the visiting producer to sing this song on the very microphone Mr. Cole used...WOW!
@direfranchement Right on Man. Their is no doubt that so called music these days belongs on the road with all the other corral cookies and medow muffins. I totally stopped listening to the air waves in 1985. I have had it with this new garbage. Come on grandparents, play NAT for the kids. One they might like by NAT is 'Nature Boy" Sincerely, Ronald J. Campbell, USA Ret.
@therickynelson1 Wonderful comment friend. I also stopped hearing the radio about 1986 when i got out of the Marines. There is nothing like this music I grew up with. Thank you for your service.
@N8908E , I agree with you wholeheartedly, this song will never grow old and I will never tire of listening. It reminds me of everything that was good about about growing up in the country and those wonderful, warm summers.
You're right, absolutely one of his best. Natalie did a remake of it, like she did everything of his, but her version is nowhere as good as this one. I'm a bass singer, and really enjoy the low note the male singers sing at the end. Awesome song
This is my all time favourite Nat song--- absolutely gorgeous!

I remember the summer of '63, when I was 10. This song will take me back to that Summer each time I hear it. Magic.

Yep, Natalie Cole was on Larry King recently and said, that the Obama's remind her of her parents, and the other children agreed as well.

though i was only 7 years old, the Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was numero uno at the time. I love Nat dearly, but the "British invasion" was well underway and the Beatles had taken America by storm, That Summer That Sunday... and the rest is, well, history.
Nat King Cole was true greatness indeed!

Geez, suddenly I'm back in the summer of 64. What a great time to be young and carefree. My parents adored Nat and so do I. That was indeed a very special summer.

Was startled the first time that I saw Nat perform at the Chez Paree, Chicago, in 1958. Nothing but CLASS and PERFECTION!!!!!!

I love this song. It was popular the summer before my senior year in HS. My friends and I would wait for it to come on the radio, turn the volume, and sing along. Nat's song made that a memorable time.

How is it that someone, as young as you are, understands the unsearchable riches of this music? I have hope for your generation, after all! ;-)
