I think Syd's theme is kind of catchy, but also I think this game stereotypes punk musicians as people with a sick sense of humour. If you pause when Syd gets the hamster, the item box will say "Exploded Hams". Bacon anyone?
@UniversalKiwi However, Syd is not a punk musician, but is, rather, a new wave musician (even if New Wave has stylistic roots in punk). Typically, new wave musicians are more intellectual and artistic than the typical punk musician.
I just read it and I have to say it's very funny. Nintendo just needs to lay of with the censoring. Most of it was nessecary but others were not like the KILL THRILL game or this. I mean what kid is really going to put a hamster in the microwave?
Nintendo didn't know about it, and was furious when they found it. They demanded it be sensored in the PAL version, and it was. That's why LucasArts games have trouble with Nintendo. Look up 'The Expurgation of Maniac Mansion for the Nintendo Entertainment System', it's an article written by a designer of the game, and is a pretty funny read about how Nintendo, even back then, controlled content via the 'Seal of Nintendo'... lol
Er, so violently jumping on Goombas and stomping them to death is OK, but cooking edible animals is not? You ever considered how much it hurts to be jumped upon, by a creature many tens of times your weight and size?

It was censored, actually. Some copies allowed you to do it, others wouldn't. Later version wouldn't allow anyone to do it, and they would only say "I don't want to do that" or some crap.
You were actually suposed to do just that. Because in the successor game "Day of the Tentacle" Ed tells Bernard that his psychologist believes he made a traumatic experience that he blocks out. When Ed tries to remember his old hamster all he can think of is a flash of light and a horrible sound, which was sort of like *DING*.
i just downloaded it the if you google maniac mansion deluxe theres a few good sites that have a free download of it its a pc remastered version better graphics still similar but not as goo as nes version
Yeah, in the northern American issue you can, but you can't do it in the British release.I got a NES from someone when i was quite small [6-7ish] [along with another console, can't remember the name, but it was some tape operated thing, not an Atari] and i loved this game, of course i didn't understand it properly, but i just found the rom on a website for it and now I'm playing it again, and even now the graphics seem pretty cool.

IMO nobody ever though of putting the hamster in the microwave so that probably would explain why this was never censored from the game.

That's not what I was trying to say. I was just wondering why this was never censored from the game.
Nfored702 2 years ago
Because Nintendo never cared about censoring violence, but rather specific manifestations thereof.
