Best version I've heard of this (other than the original) was a high school band waay back in the eighties!! Kid on quads was just as good as this drummer!! I often wonder what happened to him as he was a genuine talent.
When I was in a surfband in the 60's and played wipeout we would just kick the reverb as the entry into that song. Why kick the reverb? Those Fender reverbs had springs in them so the kick would cause the crackling noise. The guitar player who owned the reverb was never too happy doing that but then again he lived in Malibu so his parents could afford it. We were a Santa Monica based band.
