Since there's so much space out in the west, if it had broken up over the easter seaboard, there might have been more casualties because of people getting hit with debris. What I don't get, shit always happens when the shuttle goes through the atmosphere, why don't they let it circle the earth a lil bit and let it penetrate the atmosphere slowly and gently, instead of pushing right through.. Why does it need such speeds when it comes back fro ma mission, take it easy.. and odds of parts breaking off will be less.. and btw, a space shuttle costs billions but still.. It's the cheapest manufacterer that get's the contract, it's expensive like shit, but still cheap..

@laurensmalter what you don't seem to realize is that there is that space is a vaccuum. it has no gravity and such. There is no friction when you are outside of the atmosphere to slow yourself down. When they re-enter the atmosphere, gravity is pulling them in and the friction caused by the atmosphere causes all the problems they try to prevent. Also, you have to remember that the Space Shuttles were made in the late 1970s and they made 5 of them.

@laurensmalter sorry i had more to say. They were designed to be a reusable shuttle and fix them after each mission. The same ones have been used for 30 years (now down to 3). They don't just remake one with the cheapest manufacturer they can find. They reuse the shuttles after carefully inspecting and fixing.
