thikramone, the song you are referring to şs the last song on the clip. the turkish version is called "kalenin bedenleri" and it's greek version is also known as "ciftetelli turkiko" (ni-na-nai). the one i was referring to was the first pieces they were playing. there are many folk songs of anatolia which were sung in different languages by the different ethnic groups sharing the land and some are popular in all their different versions.

@alexcary77 Metaxas banned rempetika because they were about the state of the economy, the society and the country in general… which sucked. Thus he deemed them rebellious and banned them. His daughter said that “he wants to bring the western European composers in popular culture” as an excuse for his action. That was not his actual motivation though.
Metaxas did not try to ban music to have it replaced with Western stuff, he viewed rembetika as a way for the folk to be "disobedient" in a sense, if they were to be part of his political system

Κάποιες κορώνες από κάποιους είναι θλιβερές στις μέρες μας. Αντί να πετάμε μπροστά ονόματα όσων έδωσαν ότι είχαν και είναι ήρωες αληθινοί, ας κάνουμε κάτι ο καθένας γιαυτόν τον ταλαίπωρο τόπο.

thikramone, the song you are referring to şs the last song on the clip. the turkish version is called "kalenin bedenleri" and it's greek version is also known as "ciftetelli turkiko" (ni-na-nai). the one i was referring to was the first pieces they were playing. there are many folk songs of anatolia which were sung in different languages by the different ethnic groups sharing the land and some are popular in all their different versions.

In 1936, Greek dictator Metaxas also banned the Greek folk songs "Rembetika" for the same reasons. Every ban on people is unnatural. People should be free to live their lives as they want to, in every way. A big salute to my Turkish brothers on the other side of the Aegean....

@alexcary77 Metaxas banned rempetika because they were about the state of the economy, the society and the country in general… which sucked. Thus he deemed them rebellious and banned them. His daughter said that “he wants to bring the western European composers in popular culture” as an excuse for his action. That was not his actual motivation though.

Metaxas did not try to ban music to have it replaced with Western stuff, he viewed rembetika as a way for the folk to be "disobedient" in a sense, if they were to be part of his political system

Thumps up from Greece! It was awesome, and touching in a way. During the junta period lots of presently beloved songs were banned and meant a death sentence. You can get the people out of the culture, but you can never get culture out of the people. And the cops are absolutely hilarious!
