  • his looks long!

  • Just use bumper then problem solve

  • no the problem is not solved, the iphone 4 is stupid as crap, hope the next one doesent have this problem :D ,cuz if u cant use the iphone as a PHONE ,what good is that?

  • throw it in a lake

  • the phone looks really long

  • so is the problem solved?

  • @MrPatrickp0078 It actually is. Although my signal strength is certainly less impressive than the old bar system would have indicated, the case has completely resolved the drop in signal quality issue. The Speck PixelSkin case is fantastic. At this point the main problem that I have is that the proximity sensor keeps turning the screen on while I am talking. The result is usually muting myself, engaging speakerphone, initiating Facetime, or even hanging up on a call. Hopefully 4.1 will fix this.

  • @illiteratemonk thnx for the info ;)

  • My advice?

    Stop downloading p0rn with 3g,

Jezus, a frikkin XHMTL or java only takes 2 MB or 3 MB.

  • get used to using your right hand ;)

  • Although I do not have a iphone 4 yet (I have iphone 3gs), so I am not fully aware of the connection issues personally.. I disagree with your video. You claim that you grip your phone like that when you use it for talking on the phone. I think that is false. I noticed when people hold their phone (as well as myself) you use your thumbs and fingers to grip the phone.. you don't actually grip the phone in the way you are claiming to have grip it.

  • All false? What, do you think he edited in the bars dropping? It's a left handed issue (that's the way left handed people hold their phones, give it a try), apple fucked up, get over it. Yes, he can get a case to fix the problem, but did apple still fuck up? Yes, they did. Again, get over it.

  • @bweazel Uh lol.. You didn't read my comment at all. I don't know why you said "all false" or why you are arguing with me about the dropping issue.... I didn't deny any of that. I simply said how he holds his phone in the video is false. He is bear holding the phone. Your cheek touches the phone.. basically his face would be resting against the bottom of his hand. It doesn't even look normal. That isn't how people hold their phones. Please read my comment before replying random silly stuff.

  • Jobs-o-fags drownd in apple sperm for their own money.

    Again.

  • lol megabit

  • What's funny about megabit?

  • Free Case offer Update (2010/07/23): Apple's free case application just went live in the App Store. There's a decent selection of 3rd party cases in addition to Apple's black bumper. I went with the Speck PixelSkin HD case. It appears to be the only rubberized soft case in the bunch. Although these have a bit more bulk and are more difficult to get out of your pocket than hard cases, I've found that this style of case is more protective for my general use. Any of the cases should fix the issue.

  • get a case

  • You are talking about left hand holding. How do you hold it in right hand, genius?

  • youre holding ur phone like a spastic!!! urhand is covering the screen. and youre gripping it hard. i know its expesive but its not gonna jump out of ur hand

  • I just tried this same thing with my Nokia X6, holding it that exact way. Guess what? It was dropping the bars in the exact same way. I also tried if it would drop my calls.. Is it hard to guess.. Yes it did.

Just try it on your smartphone, they all have this problem, this is just overkill for the iPhone 4.

  • If u don't wna by the 30$ case or bumper u can wait cause apple is prob. Gna giv free bumpers for the problem. I don't understand why people didn't buy a case or bumper the iPhone 4 is great and has to be protected.

  • Nice vid. But if u have problems with it switch ur hand ur not playing baseball it doesn't make a difference or just get a bumper or a case. if anyone uses their right hand u shouldn't complain cause the bars are still up. It's just the left antenna that's wack.

  • @yummypie20 Most people have a left hand or right hand dominance. Shooters have left eye and right eye dominance, and people can be left ear and right ear dominance. Im left handed and right ear dominant too. Now, If i talk using my right hand I can hear, but im not comfortable. I spent too much money for an expensive phone to be told you are not holding right. It shouldnt matter. all that means is the product is flawed. Yeah im getting a case, but this justsucks out all the excitment

  • 4.01 Software Update (2010/07/15): With the new software update, the total starting bars at my testing location now hovers between 3 and 4 instead of holding steady at 5. When I hold the phone as demonstrated in the video, it continues to drop to 1 bar. This means that my original starting signal with AT&T was not so great as it seemed (somewhere around -87dB based on Apple's new calculation at the 3-4 bar point). The drop is taking me down to -107dB or less. (See Anandtech for dB ranges)

  • check out my parody video about the iphone 4 problem

  • 1mbit using 3g? o.O Doesn't the iPhone 4 have HSDP? My iPhone 3GS can easily manage higher, but might be because the net in the US isn't that great? :S Anyway, if the iPhone 4 has these problems, I'll most likely wait til they fix it, lol.

  • This is the 1st generation of the Iphone 4, any product in its first generation will have flaws, which then are corrected. I really don't see what the big deal is when you can get a case and this problem will go away. People get so butt hurt about anything nowadays.

  • its weird cuz im right handed but i hole my iphone with my left....

  • Great documentation of this... BTW, Gruber got similar results when he covered the left side band.

  • Why are you talking about left handed people? I am right handed and i'm holding my phone that way when i use my headset, sometimes when i write SMS or browsing Internet! So the problem is the same, for all (!) of us!

  • @xeno855 @bigpizza112 You guys are getting some phenomenal data rates (HTC Desire and HTC HD2, right?) These are 3G rates, not WiFi, right? Who are your mobile service providers? I noticed that you are both in Sweden according to your profiles. Sadly none of the carriers in the United States can come close to that. Even the Sprint HTC EVO 4G hovers around 3 mbit down in practice on WiMax. Any Swedish iPhone users with speed results? I think the American carriers are just stuck in the stone age.

  • @illiteratemonk the iphone get released here in swedan today! so there will probably speed results up in a few days.

  • @illiteratemonk

I got a 5,4mb/s downrate and 2,8mb/s uprate here, and im from sweden using an iphone 4.

  • @UniversalWoW Fantastic results. It's clearly an issue with the American carriers rather than the hardware itself. This is not just an AT&T or an iPhone issue. All of the major US carriers lag far behind in data rates.

  • @illiteratemonk Try covering the worlds 3rd largest country with 3G. It's not easy. Verizon will have a nationwide LTE network by 2013 though.

  • @UniversalWoW do you get the same antenna issue in Sweden?and if I may ask which operator are you on? Tack!

  • @siscopiso I use a protective "shell" or whatever its called, and with that on the iphone i don't get the antenna issue. Otherwise no antenna issue even with the shell off?:)

  • Me and my friend have Iphone 3gs. and it does the same thing, so, who cares o.O

  • Ahh im lucky to be ambidextrous

  • You state you're left handed? well you are clearly shown using your right hand index finger to operate the phone. And what happens if you need to write a note change hands to use a pen? I think not:

  • @theeuropean I hold the phone in my left hand when I take voice calls, but sure enough I also hold it in my left hand when I am quickly operating the touch screen with my right hand. If that makes me right handed during this activity, then so be it. For most apps I use both hands to hold the phone and I manipulate the screen with my thumbs. When I need to write with a pen, I use my left hand. I do not typically need to write using a pen while using my iPhone. That's the point of a smartphone.

  • @illiteratemonk I still find it more comfortable to hold "iDevices" with my right hand and use my left hand to operate it since I am a lefty.

  • If you are left handed this is a great opportunity to get better at using your right hand

  • this happens with my nokia 5800 :/

  • And this is why iphone fails, always will, always have.

So if you want to be a retarded assface, spending money on worthless stuff, go right ahead.

  • learn to righthand :D

  • The firmware-update that fixes this problem is coming tomorrow i think.

  • You sound like a news anchor. Informative, yet sexy.

  • And whats the problem with 0.68 down, and 20 upload? Thats speeds are normal on my computer?

  • @lazoni93

    lol

  • Use the phone upside down? So you will not touch the antenna even when used with you left hand. GL!

  • your voice is really annoying

  • Apple sucks, simple as that..

  • @patriotbaseballer nobody cares....

  • @patriotbaseballer Your Internet connection is not as fast as you think it is. Files are in bytes, but data transfer rates are almost always in bits. From the FCC's Consumer Broadband test page: "It is measured in terms of how many kilobits of data you can transfer per second (kb/s). File sizes are normally indicated in terms of "bytes," and a byte is equal to 8 bits. In other words, 1000 kilobits per second is equal to 125 kilobytes per second."

  • @illiteratemonk actually, patriotbaseballer, he's right - stuff like connection speed is measured in bits

  • @patriotbaseballer

You´re wrong. Internet connection is "bit". And other files and such that take space in your harddrive is "byte".

  • @patriotbaseballer

It's megabit idiot.. what phone out there do you know of that can download at speeds over 1 megabyte.......

  • Look how much of ur hand is over the screen though.

  • @shockranger From the video's description: "Although I am holding the phone a bit oddly in the video to keep it in frame, it does not take an unusual grip to produce this result." Shooting macro using a camcorder is awkward (take a look at most of the other videos on this subject). The same result happens any time the left and bottom antennae are bridged with any bare skin on my phone. My normal talking position involves resting the base of the left side on my lower palm. A case has solved it.

  • Chris Hansen?

  • Question: why would they put the antenna at the bottom, or even outside the phone?

  • @patetarr It allows the three antennae to be separate and have far more area than internal antennae. Based on my experience upgrading from an iPhone 3G, I am getting better WiFi (even still using G) and 3G data speeds as well as a generally better signal on voice calls when I am not bridging the two antennae on the left with my bare hand. The placement of the cellular antenna on the bottom may be due to FCC radiation regulations. iPhone 3GS and Google Nexus One seem to have a similar issue.

  • Shouldn't have left handed should you dickhead!

  • does this still happen if youre right handed? cuz you said this is cuz your left handed

  • @hollistergurlly If you hold the phone in your right hand while you talk you are probably fine. Just be careful to not wrap your fingers around and over the antenna joint on the lower left side. Find someone with an iPhone 4 or go to the store and pick it up naturally. You'll see if it is an issue for the way you hold the phone. As numerous posters have noted, even if it is an issue a case will solve it. This issue, irritating as it is, shouldn't make or break the decision to go with an iPhone 4

  • @virtualras not sayin' that its your / our fault...but if you're a lefty go buy a case...they're like 15 bucks...if you have enough money 'flying out of asses' to get the iPhone, then I'm pretty sure you have enough money to get a case...if you've already purchased one that is. If not, like me, wait for Apple to fix it...if they ever do.

  • i think apple knew about this, got cheep on us, and made US buy a bumper. you know whats worse, my friend just got one today and hes a lefty.

  • hail apple

  • just buy a case....

  • @TheTMac24 OMG not one of those " buy a case people" they are everywhere! You just dont get the point do you? Why do we have to paid more for apple mistake? they new that this was a problem, that why they are their own damn case for 30 freaking bucks. And what about people that dont like cases, and are lefty? you have advice for them too?

  • @TheTMac24 we already spent the money for the phone and money doesn't just fly out of asses, kid. its not our mistake, its apples

  • I hope SJobs sees your video here. and I hope they fix this major issue and not with some 30dollar bumper case that we have to pay extra for just to make a simple phone call.

  • ARE YOU THE VOICE OF THE POSTAL DUDE???????

  • @TomCococha I wish. I will do voiceover work in exchange for iPhone 4 cases.

  • LoL, I get through 6Mbps on my HD2.... HAHA, epic. jesus christ.... I knew from beginning exposing the damned antenna would cause some problems... gotta love Apple engineering...

  • To be fair, after using the iPhone 4 for a few days I must say that I'm incredibly impressed with everything else about the phone. The contact issue can be avoided if you just put a case on it. Even without the case it is possible to avoid the issue so long as you think about how you hold it. Nonetheless, I'm shocked by Apple's response. The bumper sales conspiracy is sounding more and more reasonable.

  • @illiteratemonk You're holding it wrong! #LOL

  • Damn im a lefty.

  • Engadget just reported Apple said you're holding it wrong. I'm actually serious. Fucking disgraceful response. HUGE design flaw. I won't be recommending an iPhone 4 to anyone, and I certainly won't be buying one. What's worse, I was looking forward to getting one.

    This is unacceptable.

  • @macflyfilm Wow. It's almost hard to believe that statement came from Apple. It's not our fault, it's your fault for using it incorrectly. How dare you try to hold your telephone while being left handed? Quite frankly I don't see how I can hold it steadily with my left hand and talk on it without covering the antenna gap.

I am curious to see what will happen when I go back to the Apple Store and ask for either a free bumper or a refund.

  • @macflyfilm I was too looking forward to get one, but with this problem i don´t really know anymore...

I´m righthanded and don´t know if this problem is going to affect me, but this problem shall not be on a phone that cost 799 bucks new. That´s fucking ridicilous.
