ahhhh...these were the days when she wasnt to be played with....I used to see her on tv back then, with my mouth open, because i just didnt think it was humanly possible for a sniger to sound like a "sound effect". Just pure perfection. And the band and background singers were off the damm glass!...just bananas, how good she was.

Everyone's voice changes over the years. Her voice changed throughout the 60s 70s and 80s due to smoking, which she quit in the early 90s. Everyone's voice ages and loses spot on perfection as you get older, but she still brings the soul, and her soul is always on, and when her voice can still be on today. Her weight I think effected her voice negatively, because even when Aretha was smoking 3 packs a day she sounded great. Cold weather affected her Inauguration performance.

AND some voices get stronger and better over the years too, such as Gladys Knight. Now that's a voice which sounds just as good as it did back in the 60's-70's, and better now.

@higgybaby1 Aretha probably has sang live more than any other singer living today...and in many of her performances, she takes her voice to its natural limit.  I think that is reflected in how she sings today...it has surely taken its toll. But notice, the true fans haven't forgotten what she was capable of (and still is to a certain extent) and how she has changed the face of American music. There's no one out there that can get to your gut like she can.
