Unknown Pleasures is a masterpiece - of course it has rough edges, but for emotional power and the feeling expressed by a tortured soul it is unsurpassed.

@xVhincex even when it's.... not bad for a cover, and pretty good for the new-school rock in general: it still doesn't stand up. i'm sorry but you can't say shit about joy division, and the killers absolutely killed it.
It's amazing to think of what this band did in the short amount of time they were together and the legacy after they lost Ian Curtis. We can only imagine what more this influential band could have done.

@heavydutydudes I feel the same way about Joy Division. I grew up listening to the best RnB and Soul voices. Today in an internet shop in Serey Sophon, Cambodia I have heard this song and others by Joy Division for the first time. What a great band with searing vocals by Ian Curtis.
i like the shallowness of the killers one - its refreshing tho i do agree the joy division version is much better and i like that aggressively darker mood than the killers passive tribute
The Killers version is unlistenable. And I don't even dislike the Killers' music. It doesn't glide, it doesn't have the mood, it doesn't have "FOR THEIR OWN ENDS!!!" Hearing their version of Shadowplay over the end credits of "Control" was the worst part of that movie.
what version of shadowplay by jd are you on about they did so many all slightly different but capturing the atmosphere of the lyrics brilliantly its nice the killers paid their respect even though they turned a powerful song into merely a pop song
It's not paying respect. It's using Ian Curtis's talent to pad their pockets. There is a thin line between paying homage and exploitation. It's an easy way to get a good song and get paid...buy it and pass it off as your own. That's what untalented people do, especially to the dead who can't defend themselves.
thanks for your comment, all i can say there are countless bands who have done covers of the living and dead. i said i dislike killers version ,i'm also sure they were asked to do it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I know y'all are not going to be pleased to hear this but the Killers version is so much better. This is boring and the Killers is lively and to be taken seriously
Lets recall what it means to be "pop" music. It typically translates to "popular" and "mainstream." Though its important to remember that talent and accessibility are not mutually exclusive. Also, though often correlated, deviance isn't synonymous with creativity.
Joy Division may not have reinvented a genre however they managed to crescendo to an influentially unique niche in the mainstream.
i like their music but its really not that great. Sorry, its just not that talented or creative. I think they'd be the first to tell you its simple pop. Dark pop, but still pop.
"and in fact many critics thought Joy Division were great because of of Ian Curtis. He made Joy Divison." Bullshit. The band would be nothing without all 4 members. Shadowplay in particular would be nothing without Sumner's guitar riffs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm agree, but I would change Edwards for Pete Townshend (The Who) and Morrissey (The Smiths - Solo) writing Lyrics. That's because there couldn't be 3 singers...
I know they are very talented but there not my fav musicians and there a bit mainstream as well, the band members that i chose are good but not huge names like lennon or plant.
One the Killers are ok BUT Joy Division is legendary and RIP Ian C who great singing gives the words life, I dont know what critics are and whoever they are they can f off music is about
the killers are great one of my favorite bands at the moment but anyone who says that the killers cover of the awesome Joy Division is in anyway better than the original should listen to a better class of music not some AMERICAN Mainstream original wannabe and listen to the original northern BRITISH post punk classic band and not just shadowplay
no, im going on how they always 'reinvent' themselves all the time, not that theres nothing wrong with that but they bring out albums that only have one or two actually good songs on just to get them in the charts and make some money. The only good thing they've done was Hot Fuss, there songs now days are shit and lack creativity, 'are we human or are we dancer' are not some of the most meaningful lyrics ive heard, there nothing compared to the music joy division played and the lyrics ian wrote.
no they are just a very diverse group that can play many styles. and just because some songs are more popular doesnt make them better. go and listen to the whole album and decide for yourself.
p.s. i dont hate joy division i just think the killers are better.
"its about time everyone stopped talking about the killers on this video anyway"
Although that'd be great, its unfortunately not very likely to happen. It's the kind of thing that moronic, arrogant teenagers LOVE to do on videos like this, featuring a great classic song that's been covered by some mediocre johnny-come lately artist.
It's funny, b/c I am a big fan of JD. But I've never thought of comparing them to the Killers...I"m not a big Killers fan b/c I've always thought they seemed to mainstream and unoriginal . But that my taste, I'm not trying to insult any Killers fans, it's just my view. JD is unique and different....you hear a JD song and recognise it right away and enjoy it......Killers...I could go somewhere where they are playing and not even pause to hear the song.....
Awesome song!
Before this I heard the version of "The Killers" and think that it's original.

the killers are great one of my favorite bands at the moment but anyone who says that the killers cover of the awesome Joy Division is in anyway better than the original should listen to a better class of music not some AMERICAN Mainstream original wannabe and listen to the original northern BRITISH post punk classic band and not just shadowplay

The killers are a sellout mainstream band in it for the money,
Joy division were about music

Its pretty cool you know that just by assuming because they're popular.

no, im going on how they always 'reinvent' themselves all the time, not that theres nothing wrong with that but they bring out albums that only have one or two actually good songs on just to get them in the charts and make some money. The only good thing they've done was Hot Fuss, there songs now days are shit and lack creativity, 'are we human or are we dancer' are not some of the most meaningful lyrics ive heard, there nothing compared to the music joy division played and the lyrics ian wrote.

Actually i think it is "are we human or are we denser?". The song is about unplugging someone who's in a coma.
Probably the "dancer" resemblance is a play on words

dancer isnt used like that. it isnt used as a noun.

no they are just a very diverse group that can play many styles. and just because some songs are more popular doesnt make them better. go and listen to the whole album and decide for yourself.
p.s. i dont hate joy division i just think the killers are better.

So you're the one who's mainstream then, you only listen to their 'popular' songs.
Some of the less popular songs are much better and have very touching lyrics?
Have you heard 'Replaceable'? They didn't even release that song, because he didn't think it was good enough, but it's fantastic.
Get your shit right.

haa, dont take it all so seriously,

its about time everyone stopped talking about the killers on this video anyway
