I tried this OS for a few days. It was cute, but not for me. Maybe if my mom wanted me to set up a really simple netbook I'd recommend it, but not for anyone that considers themselves a "power user"
@TheRealBlackClipz JoliOS is to Linux as Windows 7 is to Microsoft, and same with iOS/Apple. It is its own software brand, so yes you can install on most anything.
Thanks you convinced me to switch from my quick but not blazing ubuntu 11.10 with gnome 3 (unity slows my computer to a crawl, I only have a netbook with one GB ram) to this, I have not installed it yet but look forward to doing it. Wanted to a couple months ago but couldn't find the download link in their site( I feel stupid! Big Download Buttons in the middle of the page!). But good review, you covered the features nicely. Thanks.
i tried joli for a about a month before they updated to 1.2, after that my netbook (which is less than a year old) constantly froze and never seemed to function right. After dealing with this for about 3-4 months I had to switch to Ubuntu 11.04. Joli ran a little better (when it ran) but I started getting pissed when they only seemed to care about "dropbox integration". Ubuntu was just as easy to install and gave actual updates, like an OS should.
Windows is great for businesses. It runs on everything and has ton of official office programs. Like MS word, and if you can use it on linux too with Open Office.
@MrMakeman Windows is great as long as you have the latest and greatest hardware to back it up. There's plenty of linux distros that run great on older machines and there's plenty of alternative apps to the usual windows apps besides openoffice. The reason linux isn't popular for business is because a small percentage of people even realize it exists and there isn't enough money to be made with it.
Has anyone tried using the Onlive app for Joli OS? If it works well...then cloud computing not only has a awesome "desktop" environment, but gaming is also available at the click of an icon.
The traditional desktop may well become a thing of the past in the not too distant future. Obviously workstations will still exist for developers and extreme gamers, but I'm guessing a good 80-90% of the computing population could be satisfied by something like Joli OS.
Thanks for the review! It is really good, indeed :) I guess I ll give a try to Jolicloud. I m just not so familiar with all this cloud based stuff! Anyway :)
nice review, but i have one question. I have photos on my old computer that id like to keep, is there any way i can keep my photos somewhere on the Joli OS ? like a desktop and folders?
@Robotbop1 Picasa works on linux as well and there's a .deb package you can download for for Debian-based distros like Joli OS. Just look for Picasa for Ubuntu.
This is pretty inaccurate. :-S Anyway you can use Office 365 (the online version) alternatively you can use Libre office. The whole system is based off Chromium, thus you'll have access to Webstore apps, WebGL, NaCL, etc. I would recommend this to eeevverryone -> 10:44
@Ang3lbyteZ Yes you can use it offline, it just needs to be connected to the net once and after that some cached memory remains on ur HDD/SSD so u can use ur PC/Mac offline (: HTML5 is something amazing u know :)
@91jmda okay.. thx very much.. this os looks really nice.. i am very intressting to me.. because its better then googlechrome and better than windows.. and best of all.. ITS FUCKIN LINUX.. ;D
@WetTechReview thats not true, you MUST be online in order to use jolicloud, so if your internet connection is fucking up, your outa luck. other than that its pretty cool, like for them to change this tho
@MrFuzzycrackboy you're wrong... you have to have internet access the first time you install it and turn on your computer, after that just let it sleep and it'll be fine.
@madmitch105 well, whats the point of her question then? you have to be online in order to login to jolicloud, so why would you care about apps that work offline? Anyways, i ditched it anyway, just not as great as windows, maybe good for someone with a older and slower computer, but not for a newer...
What do you mean "not working right now" when you went to add a new webapp? You forgot to chose the last option, thats why it didnt work... Pick the Icon for the app... then it works great.
After watching your glowing review of Jolicloud, I installed it on my desktop computer which is an older Dell with 470MB ram and a 2.5gig processor. After reloading, it failed to bring up the program icons and instead has bars across the screen. Checking out the Jolicloud website support section, I found it amazingly lacking and offered no way to fix this. It had a restore utility that did not help at all. Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated, otherwise I would say avoid this O.S.
@mrbr549 I am not sure how to fix that problem. Check out the Joli OS compatibility list to make sure your computer is compatible as well. You can also visit some online forums by searching the web for them because sometimes those are the best places to seek help.
@mrbr549 For me it sounds more of a graphics issue, or could be that your Dell is low on RAM, idk if its normal but on my 1 GB (ram) netbook, it uses like 360 MBs of RAM, a very very light distro for ur computer would be Crunchbang Linux, its based on Debian Stable and it uses the openbox window manager, which uses like less than 70 MBs of RAM when idle, try it out =D
@91jmda After further use I found that it works perfectly on the guest account. Problem with that is, nothing is retained when rebooted. Strangely, it also works on the main account somewhat if I left click where an icon would be and drag it a short distance in any direction. All the icons become visible and look normal as long as I hold the left click on the mouse. Release it and they all are covered by the solid bar. I have been looking for a better distro, so thanks for your suggestion.
