i find in the older subaru's the best fix is to lightly wedge a long piece of metal in between the heat shield and exhaust pipe. and in the newer motors with the "wrap around" heat shield, use a screwdriver and wedge metal washers in between the two metal layers of the shield.

the dealer told me it is the shifter which rattles. i have the 07 impreza.

same problem I had, the heat shield is a bitch....I am getting mine removed to solve the problem, tried tightening it but it comes back with the normal engine vibration.

WOW i have the exact same problem in my 03 2.5 ts. I have been told its most likely the heat shield.

My SVX is doing that...it's extremely annoying. I thought something was about to blow up until I tried it in neutral and it did the same thing.
