I didnt get to see this on the night and have never thought to look for it since, but OMG, this is mind blowingly AWESOME!!!
Anyone not proud to be an Aussie after this doesnt deserve to be called Australian!!!
Would be good if the football organisers could take a leaf out of the 2000 Game's organiser's book and have people to do even a half way classy job on Grand Final Day...;-)
Just to clear things up for all of you reading these from other countries. Australian's always brag on their own state and put down the others, it's practically a national sport. While the comments may seem mean it just means we are proud of our home state. However don't be mistaken into thinking that if anyone is nasty about our country that we won't all group together and find you.....heeheehee.
from an american to an australian that anthem along with julie antony and the audience at the sydeny games truely showed the spirit and pride of the australians! when i watched this i too never heard the aussie anthem but i watched this so many times along with o canada from vancouver 2010 that ive memorized this anthem and it sends the message that "this is australia!"
I love Australia so much!!! I even know how to sing the anthem too! I'm Chinese born in Canada and would luv to become Canadian Australian but Aussies don't really like to accept Asians living on their land.... Is that true!?
@rlai2201 no, as long as you wont do anything that'll make everyone hate you(like the musilms said some very shitty things about Australia),and Australia Is muti-cultred country. but i say be warn by some big groups of the Native Australians
Wow I am so bloody proud to be an Australian! In Australia we are taught the anthem from the age of 3 or 4 years old (we haven't even started school yet). We may not be the richest country, or the country where thousands of people become famous, but I can tell you, everyone here in Australia is proud to be an Aussie.
I've been listening and replaying this beautiful version of the Australian National Anthem since I was 13, Of course I've now memorized it as a 23 y/o American, and if you haven't watched Finding Nemo, or the News -- we are quite aware that we've disturbed the opinions of most people inside of this world. We've been taught in our schools and even media whether brainwashed or not that Australia, Canada, and even the UK will always be a people that we love. And I haven't felt anything different...
@ItsAFireFuk And as long as the States and the UK continue to support freedom we will support you and have done in every single war the US has been in, (the only nation in the world to do that). We don't dog our mates.

@baird55aus Julie Lush (Anthony) was born in South Australia... where they still 'darnce' and 'advarnce' :-) But the pronunciation does not detract from a most magnificent rendition of the National Anthem - still my favourite

There is one difference between the Australian National Anthem and the American National Anthem by way of the people of the respected countries' behavior when it is recited. In Australia, at least in this clip up to 4:57, everyone in the crowd is virtually silent. In America they preach being quiet and respectful during our national anthem.....we laugh, take pictures and sometimes have our own little conversations. Australia, congratulations to the people in this video for being so respectful
Australians tend to be very relaxed and chilled out relative to most people but when an event is formal it is treated as strictly formal e.g. when a minute of silence is called you stay silent (dont even breath).
As a Kiwi who's lived in Australia for the past 30 years, I find this spine tingling. It's one of my 5* iPid tracks and agree with others, this opening ceremony was/is the benchmark that future cites have to ascribe to. So far Athens and Beijing.....Fail!
11 years later and I still get choked up watching this. And I'm not even Australian! When I watched this I had never heard the athem before, and I was blown away. What a voice she has! Cheers from Canada!
I remember watching this as a 17 year old thinking "this anthems a bit mellow and quiet by opening ceremony standards" when Human Nature sang the first verse, then halfway through Julie Anthony's piece when she belted out the anthem I was stunned, and although I'm not from Australia I nearly joined in. Best anthem at an Olympic opening Ceremony without a doubt. :-)
ive never been prouder to be an australian than when i watched this, i belted it out in front of the TV, hand on heart.. i think the neighbors heard me but were too busy singing along too
@TIMEwave0able Thank God I am deaf. I like my music LOUD. But when I put this little clip, every so often, then I make sure the aeroplanes, that pass above my house, get a taste of it.
and that this is still happening in this day. and that this is not a well wide known issue.
the aboriginies need more attention from the world !! why dont the aboriginies go the united nations and get them to recognise their own state ?? in the same way the palestinians are now doing, and the lakota native american indians are trying to do in the usa.
a legal aboriginal state entity.
fuck white racists and their system still doing it today !
I am not Australian but a proud Mexican living in my country but, i cry in joy when i hear this performance of the Australian Anthem. Reasons? Its wonderful, simply as that.
I wish the canadian anthem at our 2010 olympics was performed something like this! This is spectacular, and makes me actually dissappointed in the performance of Nikki Yanofsky last year. This is the way anthems should be sung!
I dont think it's just because i've been away from Australia for a while, but the whole Olympic opening production brings me to tears of pride every time.
All countries have their good and bad points, but for me, it captured just the right angle on our culture. In regards to Aboriginal relations, very much aspirational rather than the reality, but what a spectacular !
she does own the anthem! nobody does it better and gives me shivers down my spine when i watch this and makes me proud to be australian. we showed the world in 2000 with the olympics and its a pitty we cant do the same with the world cup. oh and also i dont understand why john howard and the rest of them look like dead wood in such a great performance and moment in our countries history. we needed paul keating to be PM then lol at least we would of seen some emotion
she does own the anthem! nobody does it better and gives me shivers down my spine when i watch this and makes me proud to be australian. we showed the world in 2000 with the olympics and its a pitty we cant do the same with the world cup.
I wonder, who or what made Human Nature combine their version with Julie Anthony and the choirs? I'm actually looking for the version with just Human Nature singing this beautiful tune. Is there an official recording that this version is on? If so, where can I find it? I've searched on ITunes, but it's not there. By the way, I'd like to meet the band members. Phil Burton, Toby Allen, and brothers Michael and Andrew Tierney.
@gbalmain - I couldn't agree more. I remember Julie Anthony singing AAF at the Bicentennial and then the Olympics, and she owns it! No-one will ever come close!
@mahircetin Thank you very much for your kind words.
Australians have always liked the Turks for how respectfully you have treated the remains of the ANZAC soldiers who died at Gallipoli. Not many people would be so gracious and noble in the way they treated the graves of a people who came to invade their country. Turkey has been a kind host to the many young Australians who have gone to Gallipoli to remember the dead.
It's funny how war could bring two such different people closer together.
I went to the second dress rehersal for the opening ceremony and i was 15 then, the moment the first horse bolted out onto the arena i had tears in my eyes, it was a great moment and i was proud to be an Aussie and still Am. Something i will probably never experience again in my life time.
@satojinnthehero no, it only has two verses, they repeated the first verse in this version to lengthen it, and added an instrumental plus an outro which incorporated the "unofficial" anthem, waltzing matilda. the original advance australia fair actually had four verses. it is also commonly accepted that barely anyone actually knows the second verse, and thus only the first verse is usually sung when performed at football games, etc.
No-one and I mean no-one does the anthem better than Julie Anthony, I watched this on the night and it made me tear up with a lump in my throat as it still does to this day.
I am lucky and so proud to be an aussie and live in this great country;it's not perfect by any stretch but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I, uploaded this little but dynamic clip on YouTube and I, like you experience a lump in my throat, every time I hear 110,000 people join Julie Anthony and like you I feel lucky living in this country. With the only difference, I am a thankful Greek immigrant and that's my little contribution of thanking Australia for its generosity.
@gbalmain Oh I agree! Nobody can send the chills up the spine with this glorious Anthem like Miss Anthony! Truly another national treasure, rather a different genre but every bit as inspiring as Dmme. Melba and Southerland (R.I.P.)
10 years on... I still cry over it. The first 15 minutes of the opening ceremony send chills up my spine every time I watch it. Just to see the huge count down till the start of the games and then a lone stockman and his horse gallop out, cracks his whip and is followed by 120 fellow stockman is absolutely stunning. It is so original and thats what Australia is. And then all exiting with the Australian flag is so beautiful.
@juzu4me You really are an ignorant moron. It's the height of arrogance to criticise the national anthem of another country, something that people from that country consider to be sacred. Dare I ask which shitpile you live in?????
@jereg2 Sure, you can ask if you want. I don't mind. That doesn't make this anthem any better though....I practically fall asleep if I forget to turn the volume down
@juzu4me How does one actually tell if a Canadian has fallen asleep?
Still, I can understand why a Canadian would be SO bored of the Australian anthem. Just think of all the times you would have to hear it if you had watched the recent Commonwealth Games.
How does the Canadian one go again? You hardly ever hear it.
@PresidentZod wow. aussie all excited because his country did well at the commonwealth games WOOOOOHOOOOOO. Who cares about the commonwealth games. Seems to be a certain country WON their own Olympic games while setting a record with the most number of golds ever won. More than we can say for Australia when they hosted the summer games in 2000. And didn't a bunch of you get caught doing steroids as well? Yawn...
@juzu4me A slanty eyed gook peasant refugee sheltering in Canada is going to lecture others about the use of steroids in the Olympics? LOL.
China only won the most medals with a home ground advantage and by cheating. Just look at the Chinese gymnasts who were stripped of their medals after it was proved they were underage.
You seem quite stupid. I reckon your parents didn't have enough milk in their melanin.
@PresidentZod Well, aren't we a bigot. Well listen here you wrinkly son of a British convict, if China really wanted to it could fry your Island of fat miserable pissants in about 2 seconds flat. And China massacres you when it comes to sport as well. They only thing you are known for is sheep---and what you wrinkly bitches do to them when no one is looking. Have a nice evening, you wrinkled fat aussie
If you think China so wonderful then why don't you live in your beloved homeland?
Oh - that's right. Because China is a backward Third World polluted shithole where peasants like you are paid a handful of rice to slave in 16 hour days to make cheap crap for WalMart while the children of the "communist" elite spout platitudes about solidarity with the people as they stockpile BMWs and Mercs.
No wonder any Chinese with the means flees for the West the first chance they get.
@juzu4me Well, if you look at success per head of population, Australia is the by far more successful country not only at Commonwealth Games but Olympic Games level. You forget we only have a population of 22 million people. To be so far up the medal tally with our small population is no mean feat.
@juzu4me I'm not claiming Australia is the best sporting nation on the planet. I just get sick of people like you who put other countries down to make your own look fantastic. Get over it. Every country has its faults, every country has its valuable assets. Doesn't make one country better than another. Your posts annoyed me with your claims of supremacy, putting you back in your place seemed the logical action. Thanks also for your sarcasm, but patronising is not going to go far with me.
@nupthatisit No, no sarcasm at all. I realized I was being an idiot with my prior posts and have done an about face. Usually around Christmas I start to realize how utterly stupid I sound with a lot of my comments. Ok, so listen to this, and I mean it-when you look at total medals and compare it to population, Australia is the tops. I do believe that the only nation that beats you is a really small European one that has a the odd skier that wins medals. Peace Australia-Merry Christmas
@juzu4me Please accept my apologies, I mistook your comment for sarcasm. I mean what I say, though, I don't think any one country is better than another, and misguided nationalism does annoy the heck out me :)
@hexagonmoose The Opening Ceremony did not not made any mention to the distance of the Olympic Village to the Sydney Harbor, although the events took place in various places from Bankstown, Penrith, Bondi Beach, Darling Harbor and Sydney Harbor itself. But after the Closing Ceremony it took us every single kilometer over the Parramatta River with fireworks up to the Sydney Harbor Bridge and followed with a fantastic firework's display, while the Sydney people enjoyed an extra party.
Can't believe it's 10 years today! I still remember it like it was yesterday! It was the first opening ceremony I ever saw, and still to this day I think that it is still the best one!!!
Beijing was really big and artsy, but Sydney was.... um... just more .... fun. I respect and was blown away by the Chinese display but If i had to watch one over, I'd watch the Aussie's. I learned so much about this wonderful country from this display, all that Beijing told me was that they had alot of money to throw at a cermony.
plus 8 years later AND computerized. But what I believe was the big difference in the Opening Ceremony at least was the inclination of the Chinese to give the number 2008 so much importance hence lacking the space for any decent movement to their performers. In Sydney they came dancing time and time again, with plenty of space to improvise, while in the Beijing one they had to use fireworks till they get 2008 out of the arena time and time again..
@lordofwrath88 i completely agree. there was no element of "fun" to the Beijing games. Sydney also allowed all the athletes from all the different countries a chance to join in on the fun of the ceremony. Beijing kept all the athletes out of the picture during most of their ceremony.
@lordofwrath88 Yes. You are correct. It was a concert, but was also played at the Olympic Games. It was played at the concert, as Freddy knew he was dying. Don't say it doesn't count, as it does. I hate the way that people try to con others and gain cheap points like this.
@MarschNZ don't worry, wasn't trying to con you, just thought we were comparing ceremonies and the concert wasn't part of one. yes it was cool, I'm not a huge Freddy Mercury fan and i still thought it was pretty cool. I just personally have Sydney as my #1 favorite Ceremony ever. (Moscow and Barcelona are tied for #2) Beijing is actually #4, replacing Salt Lake City.
If anyone's interested, I've composed a short, 'epic' symphonic reinterpretation of our national anthem in minor key and uploaded it, if you care to watch/comment/rate:
Love Australia, loved being down under !! I miss Melbourne and Sydney so much !!!!!!!!! Everytime I watch this video it makes me cry !!! Thanks and go Ozzies !!
this is so beautiful.. i wish Jamaica would sing theirs with this kind of passion.. but we believe we have to be stoic as a sign of respect.. we need a Beyonce belter or someone like Julie to really send shivers down our spine.
Julie Anthony performs the best rendition of the Australian anthem out of all the people out there who have sung it. She performs in a natural, true sound without 'tizzying' up the anthem like many other performers tend to do. It is a shame she does not sing at many major events, as she has always been the best.
Who can tell me where on earth can I get meat pie and sausage roll in Taiwan? Geez...

What sort of person dislikes another countries national anthem... Sad :'(
Kylc599 8 months ago
I remember watching this as a 17 year old thinking "this anthems a bit mellow and quiet by opening ceremony standards" when Human Nature sang the first verse, then halfway through Julie Anthony's piece when she belted out the anthem I was stunned, and although I'm not from Australia I nearly joined in. Best anthem at an Olympic opening Ceremony without a doubt. :-)

and that this is still happening in this day. and that this is not a well wide known issue.
the aboriginies need more attention from the world !! why dont the aboriginies go the united nations and get them to recognise their own state ?? in the same way the palestinians are now doing, and the lakota native american indians are trying to do in the usa.
a legal aboriginal state entity.
fuck white racists and their system still doing it today !

I wish the canadian anthem at our 2010 olympics was performed something like this! This is spectacular, and makes me actually dissappointed in the performance of Nikki Yanofsky last year. This is the way anthems should be sung!
backcatcher04 11 months ago
I dont think it's just because i've been away from Australia for a while, but the whole Olympic opening production brings me to tears of pride every time.
All countries have their good and bad points, but for me, it captured just the right angle on our culture. In regards to Aboriginal relations, very much aspirational rather than the reality, but what a spectacular !
Maybe I'm just a sucker for a spectacular.

Australia, has the longest national anthem of all? Greetings from Canada.
satojinnthehero 1 year ago
@satojinnthehero no, it only has two verses, they repeated the first verse in this version to lengthen it, and added an instrumental plus an outro which incorporated the "unofficial" anthem, waltzing matilda. the original advance australia fair actually had four verses. it is also commonly accepted that barely anyone actually knows the second verse, and thus only the first verse is usually sung when performed at football games, etc.

I, uploaded this little but dynamic clip on YouTube and I, like you experience a lump in my throat, every time I hear 110,000 people join Julie Anthony and like you I feel lucky living in this country.

Oh, Canada....
PresidentZod 1 year ago
@PresidentZod wow. aussie all excited because his country did well at the commonwealth games WOOOOOHOOOOOO. Who cares about the commonwealth games. Seems to be a certain country WON their own Olympic games while setting a record with the most number of golds ever won. More than we can say for Australia when they hosted the summer games in 2000. And didn't a bunch of you get caught doing steroids as well? Yawn...
juzu4me 1 year ago
@juzu4me A slanty eyed gook peasant refugee sheltering in Canada is going to lecture others about the use of steroids in the Olympics? LOL.
China only won the most medals with a home ground advantage and by cheating. Just look at the Chinese gymnasts who were stripped of their medals after it was proved they were underage.
You seem quite stupid. I reckon your parents didn't have enough milk in their melanin.
PresidentZod 1 year ago
@PresidentZod Well, aren't we a bigot. Well listen here you wrinkly son of a British convict, if China really wanted to it could fry your Island of fat miserable pissants in about 2 seconds flat. And China massacres you when it comes to sport as well. They only thing you are known for is sheep---and what you wrinkly bitches do to them when no one is looking. Have a nice evening, you wrinkled fat aussie
juzu4me 1 year ago
@juzu4me Ha ha ha.
PresidentZod 1 year ago
@juzu4me Well, if you look at success per head of population, Australia is the by far more successful country not only at Commonwealth Games but Olympic Games level. You forget we only have a population of 22 million people. To be so far up the medal tally with our small population is no mean feat.
nupthatisit 1 year ago
@nupthatisit Yes I see, my apologies for my misinformation. Well done Australia, perhaps the best sporting nation on the planet!
juzu4me 1 year ago
@juzu4me I'm not claiming Australia is the best sporting nation on the planet. I just get sick of people like you who put other countries down to make your own look fantastic. Get over it. Every country has its faults, every country has its valuable assets. Doesn't make one country better than another. Your posts annoyed me with your claims of supremacy, putting you back in your place seemed the logical action. Thanks also for your sarcasm, but patronising is not going to go far with me.
nupthatisit 1 year ago
@nupthatisit No, no sarcasm at all. I realized I was being an idiot with my prior posts and have done an about face. Usually around Christmas I start to realize how utterly stupid I sound with a lot of my comments. Ok, so listen to this, and I mean it-when you look at total medals and compare it to population, Australia is the tops. I do believe that the only nation that beats you is a really small European one that has a the odd skier that wins medals. Peace Australia-Merry Christmas

Beijing was really big and artsy, but Sydney was.... um... just more .... fun. I respect and was blown away by the Chinese display but If i had to watch one over, I'd watch the Aussie's. I learned so much about this wonderful country from this display, all that Beijing told me was that they had alot of money to throw at a cermony.
lordofwrath88 1 year ago 32
plus 8 years later AND computerized. But what I believe was the big difference in the Opening Ceremony at least was the inclination of the Chinese to give the number 2008 so much importance hence lacking the space for any decent movement to their performers. In Sydney they came dancing time and time again, with plenty of space to improvise, while in the Beijing one they had to use fireworks till they get 2008 out of the arena time and time again..
mmyrt 1 year ago
@lordofwrath88 i completely agree. there was no element of "fun" to the Beijing games. Sydney also allowed all the athletes from all the different countries a chance to join in on the fun of the ceremony. Beijing kept all the athletes out of the picture during most of their ceremony.

@lordofwrath88 Sorry for me, this was not so great. Now this is real class:

@lordofwrath88 Yes. You are correct. It was a concert, but was also played at the Olympic Games. It was played at the concert, as Freddy knew he was dying. Don't say it doesn't count, as it does. I hate the way that people try to con others and gain cheap points like this.
MarschNZ 1 year ago
@MarschNZ don't worry, wasn't trying to con you, just thought we were comparing ceremonies and the concert wasn't part of one. yes it was cool, I'm not a huge Freddy Mercury fan and i still thought it was pretty cool. Julie Anthony performs the best rendition of the Australian anthem out of all the people out there who have sung it. She performs in a natural, true sound without 'tizzying' up the anthem like many other performers tend to do. It is a shame she does not sing at many major events, as she has always been the best.
