  • what brush set do you use?

  • The first piece of art i've seen by this guy was Vampire Nighthawk.

  • How can I get a hold of Jason .

    Please have him email me

    ralvarez1999@yahoo.com

  • He's doing a back flip while sitting and explaining. Talented guy he is.

  • @HailTheEnder Level asians :)

  • Whats the song in the begining???

  • the first character looks like Aragorn from LotR meets Assassin's Creed lol. Great stuff though!

  • OLOLOL at first i thought you were sitting in front of those pictures, and went all :O when you were upside down

  • pixelconceptart.blogspot.com/

  • JASON CHAN RULES!

  • @mrking0205 lol an american calling a different race idiotic

    HAHAHAHA FUCKING FUNNY

    Fucking idiot

  • @DarenHD oh yeah i'm an american my ass

  • @mrking0205 lol ok so you just put your country as America on your profile for the LOLs right?

  • you look so bored xD

  • fucking asians.... as soon as you think your good at something... there is always an asian thats better

  • How do you think of things to put on him on the spot and not make him look retarded

  • WTF why is Jason's head floating all over the place.

  • @Saurabhinator Why not.

  • how do you do that do you use a sketch pad connected to your computer or are you using a mouse???

  • @northyboy88 of course he is using a sketch pad (tablet) ... it's almost impossible to draw with a mouse

  • is it a very hard to convert your drawing skills from on paper onto the intuos ?

  • @jasperrumbelow it takes some practise but at the end it allows you to do more and faster than on paper

  • @jasperrumbelow well, it is not that hard, until you get used to pen tablet, because you are trained to look where you draw ( at the tip of the pencil ) and with tablet ( except those monitor-tablets ) you need to watch the screen, but it is not that hard...just a bit of practice, nothing more...

  • him moving around the screen reminds me of tommy lee doing the spinning drum cage

  • What program is he using?

  • @232x It doesn't matter what software he is using, you just need to be able to draw :-D Probably Photoshop just because of it's popularity, but could be anything from Painter to SAI. It's all about the way you use it, you take your time with any "paint" program and you can get same/similar results in various software suites.

  • It doesn't matter how technically talented anyone is. If all they draw and paint are the same things we've all seen a million times, it doesn't mean shit.

  • wtf he doesn't have hands

  • wow her must be really Spiderman

  • @Kaisertoji this is a guy.

  • @TheMangaka234 typo error dude if I meant that he is a she, I would've said "wow she really...." anyway thanks ^^;

  • very good

  • What program do you use?

  • Damn. watching this makes me feel like such a weak ass artist

  • for the layers are they in normal or mutiply

  • Wow, you have talent :), you dont use a mouse right?

  • Wow, you have talent :)

  • This guy needs to calm down he sounds way to excited in the video...

  • im all about realistic nice

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa O_O this guy is not humannn damn!

  • hahaha TRY TO CATCH THE CHINESE GUY!

  • heý_ï_fËÉl_sõ_loNÊlY_tOÐäy

  • How much do you charge for drawing characters like this. Please contact me via email.

  • Does anybody know were i can get some good brushes (Maybe the brushed he is using?)

  • @LyperArts idrawgirls tells you how to make them on is blog, also you can download some from his site too (artzinspired.co.uk)

  • This dosnt really help me too much, i want to know what brushes he's using to paint

  • Does the DVD come with those wicked brushes? :O

  • THIS IS FUCKIN AMAZING! mad props

  • Everyone has really nice hair!

  • The character design on the far left looks a little like Kevin Sorbo from the Hercules TV series during the early 2000's and Andromeda Oo

  • @yoiiiaaa i got the same question as u :(

  • Thx for uploading, i learn much about concept art :P

  • solid video, great art.

  • the chair moving reminded me of team america

  • where can i learn the basics for this and where should i start?

  • wow. why the hell did you have him moving around the goddamn screen. talk about distracting.

  • My penis is bigger......I dont know why I said that, its late, im zbrushing, im tired.....and

HOLY FUCK DID YOU SEE THAT AT 1.12 HE HAS NO BODY!!!

  • who forgot to glue his chair?

  • Im gonna listen to this next time i have trouble sleeping, and watch this next time i need inspiration

  • This is really cool, it is a great learning curve of how to do a rough character concepts in different styles.

  • Wasn't he the one who designed Dragon Age characters?

  • whats the name of the music? really great..

  • awesome DVD. :) whats the music playing here? really awesome music ..would like to know..

  • I've seen quite a few of the massive black DVD tutorials, I have to be honest - a lot of them are not that different from a speed painting video or something, not incredibly informative. Chan is one of the better teachers in his DVDs though, but still could use more in depth technique analysis and what not.

  • Dude that was sweet man like the ideas that you come up with for each Character.

  • really cool

  • Are you using photoshop? If so which one?

    Great art btw

  • i honestly believe these people dont exist anymore <_<

all good digital artist are robots. or programs <_<

  • good artwork!

  • why are u moving round the screen looks stupid

  • the other guy looks like squall! nice!

  • hahaha damn funny movin around...

  • what brush did you use for the 3rd styles hair? i was also wondering if you had a tablet to do all this cause i don't have one but i use a mouse with kind of makes it difficult to make it look as though i am drawing on the computer instead i have to scan drawings and concepts then color/edit them in photoshop

  • yo did he use cintiq or just simple wacom???

  • hey what program is this!!

  • were can i get the brushes he uses to add the dust effect ? and how do you resize custom brushes for large drawings ?

  • i have this one, and is amazing, jason chan have a incredible work.

  • HAHAHAHA him floating around. omg. Awesome.

  • alguien sabe si existen videos de jason chan subtitulados al español?

  • AHHHHHHHHH! flying head AHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • I just had an art-gasm watching this...this helps us aspiring concept artists so much!!

  • @eric76ss thank you , m8 :]

  • ''he/she will be able to help a client, and get paid, and then have kids, or maybe a fast car.'' rofl :D

btw how much does a concept artist earn a year? aproximately?

  • rofl at you moving around the edge of the screen xD

  • @Alzion yea haha i was laughing so hard

  • #3 is the style I'm using for an RPG story I'm designing (and have been on and off for the past 10 years). Thanks for posting this. I'm trying to get a better idea of how to draw them. I've always been a fan of Tetsuya Nomura's art and have recently gained an affinity for Nao Ikeda's style, especially her play on real life outfits, and the thoroughness of her concepts.

  • Correction, His... the *ao at the end of his name always throws me off.

  • How much money an artist gets is dependent on many things. How well he negotiates, knowledge of his own value vs. the market and the end use of the character. By the time you get to character design for something like 'Ice Age' (peter deseve) you know how much you can ask for. If you are doing a cartoon dog for a small start up, you can figure about 35-50 after that it's all in who you are doing it for.

  • Does anybody know how much money does a character designer get per a character?????????

  • Depends on the status of artist.

Contracts are normally time based not asset based. Though on DeviantArt there are lots of people offering rates per character. Prices vary generally from 20$ to up around 250$

depending how good the artist is.

  • Thats only for pink furry bunny rabbits

  • Sorry, but I didn't understand that. What does it mean?

  • For characters like Mickey Mouse, Sponge Bob and Superman.... Mmmmm let me think... Maybe a billion USD, not sure.....

    ^_^

  • WOW, that's a lot!!!! I wonder why?

  • Try to contact Disney ( $37B revenue company ) with character as appealing as Mickey Mouse was. As long as this new character allows them to make another additional $3B per year, you will be paid as much as you can imagine. So stop watching youtube and go drawing.

    ^_^

  • mmm, I didn't get that very well( I'm not a native English speaker BTW), but I hope someday I'll do it :)

  • People who think Jason Chan uses fancy-pancy photoshop plugins that instantly make your drawings "leet" are dumb. He clearly only used standard photoshop brushes in this video. I prefer artists like Jason Chan who don't use fancy plugins, I think a drawing made out of some simple, basic, hard brushes look a lot more artistic!

Go Jason Chan! You are my hero! I follow your examples and I wish to become as good as you! Well, if I would master only half of your skills I would already be happy. :P

  • "Everyone has nice hair. And fashionable clothes."

    True enough. ^^

  • ok...the idea of him moving over the frame is just stupid. but WOW! its a must have DVD :)

(hope Jason will not be floating over the screen throughout the DVD hehe :p )

  • Stupid? I think the word you were looking for is "Awesome" :P

  • lol

  • lol

  • @MassiveDVD no...its stupid

  • @MassiveDVD He should be chased by a bunch of multi coloured ghosts the whole time. :P

  • @MassiveDVD awesome? i think the word you were looking for is "Hilarious" :P

  • @MassiveDVD indeed it's FCUKIN AWSUM

  • @MassiveDV That his a great artist not mean that all of his ideas are "AWESOME".Thats moving is really stupid and there's nothin "AWESOME" in it.

  • @whitescape moving idea it's little bit annoying but really funny :D

  • @whitescape Haha i thought it was cheesy at first then when he went sideways and upside down I thought it was hilarious

  • @whitescape it's something else for a change :D

  • Ugh, I loved those custom brushes that he was using. I wish i could see more of them.

  • wow.. i really enjoyed this.. we have the same style in drawing and i like that.. im looking forward to watching your other videos..

  • i just find it funny that to jazz it up they decide to move his head around the four corners of the screen

  • I know, I'm literally laughing out loud

  • me too XD I was like "Wut where you goin'???"

  • What size tablet do you think he uses?

  • to Skyliner: probably like 5ft by 3ft.

  • Because the size of the tablet is clearly direcly proportional to the quality of the artwork, am i right?

  • holy crap 5ft by 3ft? that's huge!!

  • Nice video :D! What plugin are those textured brushes from? 5 stars :)!!!

  • Does he use pressure sensitivity?

  • which kind of brush does he uses at 3:15 ? i really love it

  • yeah! he makes it look soo easy lol

  • Need to get me a tablet :p Impossible without

  • WOW, I like this so much cuz my dream is to become a character designer and I'm waiting to finish the college and then try to make my dream come true, but I really have to learn a lot and I need to improve my skills.

  • Yup same!

  • practicepracticepracticepractice

  • Yeah, i am very much!

  • yeah me too, want to be a char designer...

  • god dam jason has gone along way, ive followed his shit since like the 90's.. when he was doing crappy final fnatasy fanart lol... great inspiration

  • what program is it that he uses in the beginning for the linework?

it isnt photoshop, and dosnt quite look like painter either.

  • It's photoshop start to finish, actually. he usually has his menus hidden or on another monitor. (tab key is the shortcut for that).

  • Do you know if he uses all default brushes?

  • what does he use to draw those characters? I know photoshop but what else?

  • I edited the video. He only used Photoshop.

  • yeah but I mean I dont think he uses his mouse to draw does he?

  • He uses a Wacom tablet.

  • @MassiveDVD Wacom ftw! just got my Intuos4 a few months ago for my illustration class...I love it!

  • @MassiveDVD im gonna get that it looks worth it since i use photoshop alot anyways

  • @MassiveDVD but does he not use paint tool SAI?

  • wacom tabet!

some photoshop plugins only company's can buy etc...

  • i would agree except i think you would need much more than plugins such as a steady hand and good eye maybe a tablet if this is done in mouse than i doubt most will reach this level in the time limit of it almost being magical

  • @homeworld4

    not neccisarily

ive seen people do stuff oof equal quality with gimp and gimp plugins

  • wish i've a good hand like him

mine is like a banana with a pencil.

  • too bad for you

  • Jason's got VIDEOFRAME-TRAVERSING POWERS.

    And mad art skills, too.

  • i was like WTF when i was watching xD

  • Very cool. I wonder if he uses a tablet for that. I bought a Wacom a while back and found out that using the Wacom pen just doesn't feel the same as pen on paper.

Takes way too long and I have to keep switching back and forth between mouse and pen.

    Nice vid, and thanks.

  • I'd say he's probably using a Wacom Cintiq, which I find much more intuitive than a normal tablet, since you're looking at your hand while drawing.

  • he's just using a regular tablet, as do most of the guys at massive black.

  • True, it does feel different. And takes getting used to. I found what helps me is a little trick I learned from a colleague.

Get a sheet of vellum from a local art store and tape it to the tablet. Make sure that it's a strong sheet that will stand up to a fair amount of use.

Also, make sure that what ever you get has a bit of texture to it NOT something smooth or that would defeat the purpose. ;)

  • if it was 14.99 id get it ... but sorry, 15 is just too much

  • aawezome! think il really gonna like this one

  • thank you

  • Holy cow! Where can I get a chair like that!

  • He'd make Hawking jealous with that chair :o

  • :yayca:

  • OMG it's moving everywhere

  • omg it took me a while to realize his head was moving around left to right

  • For 15 dollars MB is practically giving this extremely valuable information away, so don't fucking pirate it assholes.

  • good stuff, Jason chan is the man with the plan. Definitely worth the 15 bucks hoss...

  • i realy like jasons downloads, got 2 of em already. cant wait untill this comes out. when does it actually become available? thanks

  • nice

  • uhh.. 15.

unless you buy it 5 times. then it's 75.

  • Definitely worth it. Jason is awesome for being able to articulate what he's doing, where he wants to go with an image.

  • hmm thats not bad.. ive been thinkin about buying some massive tutorials.. gotta get that art book too

  • Even if it were 70, it would still be worth it.

  • waouw

  • awesome

  • Yeah, cool man!!

  • weldone , very good designs
