Each XO requires a OLPC server or USB device to give a valid "lease" or it will "brick" (G1G1 buyers will likely get a one time lease without an expiration time). The Bitfrost security system is contained on a chip I read was permanently soldered and epoxied to the motherboard. It can not be overlooked that laptops may be stolen because of thieves that do not know about the "bricking" and that technology that can bypass the security may arise.
I read about this in a magazine what there trying to do is to let kids learn without books which Africa and other devolving nations cant afford like here in the u.s. and use laptops with the books thy need inside them.(thats what I think at least)And of course these laptops aren't cheap they were aiming for 120$ but they use to much good parts so thats why there 400$
This is not a 'cheap' laptop, this is an expensive laptop ordered in mass volume made with processes commonly available, creating a highly efficient, and low cost laptop made from quality parts. An inexpensive laptop, but not a cheap one by any means.

They're not $400, they're $200. It's only $400 if you want to buy one because one of them goes to a kid and the other goes to you.
