Hello, I'm doing a South African play and I have to speak a few phrases in Tswana. So far I haven't even found out what they mean, could anyone help me?
I'm afraid to say that "boroba/bofera-boraro" doesnt exist in official Setswana. It only applies for eight and nine.. which are borobabobedi and borobabongwe respectively!
For seven it logically correct but if we say/write it what are we gonna say for six???
Good job but one correction! 'I'm 17 years old' translates to 'Ke di ngwaga di le lesome le borobaboraro'! What is written on the board there translates to 'I'm 80 years old'!
I guess tswana is a hard language...its actually "lesome le bofera/ boroba bobedi...boroba boraro would be 7, which is bosupa...or Kutendeka in kalanga....
@JidHob No! Lesome le bosupa or lesome le borobaboraro/boferaboraro is 10 + 7 (17). I guess the latter version is a bit awkward but still correct! Masome a boferabobedi is 80 though! The other way of saying the same thing is 'masome a robedi'!, 80! Isn't it?
@sgleteane You are all correct! I guess it just shows that there are various ways of saying the same thing in Setswana! So no one is technically wrong here!
you cannot learn good by having books, software ect. you have to actually go to southafrica. in soweto located in southafrica. or go to botswana. thats the best way you can learn u shud stay there for about a year or maybe 6months if ur a fast learner!

Setswana sounds wonderful to me, especially the letters r (trilled /r/), g (/x/), tl (/tɬ/) and the drawled vowels.
Dumela, thank you for sharing a bit of your very beautiful language!

As in Xhosa or Zulu? Not at all.
Sesotho / Southern Sotho (close related to Setswana) has click consonants however.

You are very correct, but one last correction, it translate to " Ke dingwaga dile lesome le bosupa". Borobaboraro is rarely used I think.. cheers
