I remember Cleese saying he could have destroyed Muggeridge at any moment with his own quotes, yet backed off because he felt their arguements had nailed them pretty early.
Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood? Those aren't Python sketch names? C'mon... I half expected to see Graham Chapman and Terry Jones playing the other two.
Holy shit!!! lol I *just* found out about this -- after *just* finding out about the docudrama on what leads up to the debate -- a few minutes ago [after having ZERO clue this even existed! lol] & the last comment's just 2 HOURS OLD!! lol GOD, I love the intermationsuperweb ....
The film is funny because it mocks the Romans, it jokes with the notion that someone would be mistaken for the messiah, it takes the mickey out of humans whom Jesus died for. It doesn't contradict what Jesus taught people.
I don't think that they were bigots necessarily, just old men. I've met plenty of Christians and atheists alike who are extremely closed minded. If it were a film making fun of Charles Darwin there would be some old Professor who would be equally annoying. (And then the Christians would be posting angrily about his vitriol.)
@frithar That's the trouble with bigots, they don't come to debate or listen... just to try to hammer you into submission with their words. Both those gents made the mistake of patronising Cleese and Palin as undergrad students... they totally underestimated their obvious intellect.
I think you should add to the description that Muggeridge and Stockwood arrived 15 minutes late when going to watch the movie together to prepare for the debate, meaning that they missed the scene where Brian is shown to not be Jesus.
Christ never had a lust for glory. Palin, Chapman, and Jones said on their 1979 interview with Tom Snyder that Jesus was a likable, amiable person who tried to tech people to keep their ego in check among other things. It was Idle who came up with the Lust for Glory title. Then again, he grew up in an orphanage so work it out.
The people with a lust for glory seem to be the ones against Christ.
@stokepogue The "lust for glory" is about how obsessive many of the followers of Christ are in calling him the greatest thing to ever exist. How, if a person doesn't think he is utterly amazing, they are "evil" people. It makes you wonder. If Christ did not desire for all to follow him and believe he is the absolute all powerful and incredible, why do many of his followers insist that you MUST see him as such?
@Kavono1 Then it should've been called Christianity: Lust for Glory, not Christ which are two very different things...
Those followers became a "group", a "closed system of thought" as Cleese puts it; where an idea becomes so popular within it and becomes more consolidated that they're unable to let in any contradictory idea to help them change their mind, or worse, destroy any non-believers. That's not the fault of Christ but people; the flotsam and jetsam of humanity that were around then...
Respond to this video... ...and today. It's a by-product of the human being when a so-called prophet's ideas are liked by a large number of people and therefore morphed into the official "rules" of the ideas, rules obeyed by the expectations of the followers within the group without letting any contradictory ideas in. So you get brainwashed.
Respond to this video... In the case of Christianity, it’s one of the three big world religions (along with Judiasm and Islam) that naturally became so popular and therefore became, like all religions, a little too big for its britches which, again, is an unfortunate by-product of being human. That’s where the fanaticism that you’re talking about comes from. It’s either our way or the wrong way.
Respond to this video... But what a lot of people don’t realize (and an admirable trait that I find in Christians) is that Christ taught on his mount that “the meek shall inherit the Earth”. In other words, “keep your ego in check”. That’s hardly a harbinger of war, fanaticism, or the arrogance that “insists” you must join them. Unfortunately, they seem to have broken that rule over the years by spreading their collective egoism around. It’s not Christ’s fault, it’s people.
@Kavono1 I didn't say it made them less. Idle hated the bullying and abuse of the orphanage which made him hate authority, and no doubt where his criticism of religion comes from like the other Pythons. My comment stems from the fact that he didn't seem to take part in much Life of Brian discussions and also the fact that he recently wrote a song called "Fuck Christmas" which to me seems culturally-bigoted, narcissistic, and one-sided, surprising for a Python.
Dear nir0bateman - I guess it was you that posted Yes Minister on YouTube a few years ago.
I just wanna thank you for all the good work, YM and this - you really make my day with these clips. They're intelligent and fun to watch - that's what YouTube and the Internet should be about. Screw those who try to take the videos off, they're just dumb, narrow-minded people, and they'll lose in the end.
@satanidomini It's not so much that their target was Chritianity as such - their target was religious sentiment, & they opted for that particular 1 because it's the dominant 1 in their own national culture
As for the rest - I disagree, Brian's an obvious metaphor for Christ, any other view is falling for the Monties' line on it, which I don't
@kcirdrab No. It is not about Jesus. The Python's considered making a film about Jesus but then decided he was "a good guy" and decided to just make a satirical film about the New Testament to criticize the hold organised religion has over its followers.
Cleese & Palin aren't being honest here, the central character of LOB is obviously a metaphor for Christ, & the intention was specifically to ridicule Christianity as a religion
@kcirdrab Life of Brian is one of the most honest films there is, because it shows the truth of the time - for example that it wasn't just Christ who supposedly got crucified, lots of peope did.
Pusilianimous strategy; the spooky mystics wiped the floor with 'em. They should've had the guts to say that Christianity IS RIDICULOUS, and tough balls if you're offended.
Thank you so much for uploading!
