on the official halo 3 website it shows u random vids of messages left behind by the forerunners- basically it means that thousands of other plans were used to try and eradicate the flood once and for all but all failed so insted they created the halos so that the flood didnt take over the universe blah blah blah u get the idea

Nah, the book actually runs from even before the events of the first Halo (like when Kurt was "kidnapped" to train the Spartan-IIIs) through Halo 2 (there are several references to "the first battle of Earth," which is what Halo 2 was focused around...Halo 3 is the "second battle" I'm guessing). No one has any idea what role, if any, the other Spartans will play.
