I disagree, Pear. The person doing the asking is inviting the other on the date.That invitation implies that the person asking is treating. Just as you wouldn't invite someone to dinner at your house and then charge them money for the food you served them, you shouldn't invite someone out and expect them to pay all or part of the tab. I don't think that is old fashioned, but rather common courtesy. If you don't have the money to spend on the date, wait until you do before you ask the person out.
