  • Thank you for posting this.

  • He is featured in todays devotional OUR DAILY BREAD by DAY OF DISCOVERY< THANK YOU CHRISTOPHER FOR YOUR TESTIMONY GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST!!! GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE!!!!

  • The greatest guitarist that ever lived? Really?

  • @Noahsyc yeah noob stfu know any one better than segovia?

  • what is all this about his not being technically masterful? all that IS technique. the hand is perpendicular to the strings, neck of the guitar at his neck, all that is how it should be.

  • There you go. A man takes a break from live performance, a score of trouts die.

  • anyone know the piece he is playing at the very end of this video? i think its bach but im not sure.

  • @fromage2323 Suite for solo cello No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012. This is track 9 on Parkening Plays Bach. There is a cello performance on YouTube.

  • @lallas92 Your right, its the 5th movement 'Gavotte.' Thanks.

  • @lallas92 if you search for "bwv 1012 gavotte guitar" you will get some guitar results

  • satan's guitar player...: Anielo Desiderio

  • @Dickheader321 lmao why anielo? he does seem kind of mean in his videos i guess?

  • Who would Satan's classical guitarist be?

  • Desiderio >:)

  • are you kidding me?? this guys very technical...he has won prestigious competitions!...he is one of the worlds foremost players. his techinique is a good as williams.

  • @porpoisefathom What does technique have to do with winning competitions, or being a "foremost player"?

  • @warrkrymez if your technique sucks--you certainly wont win any competitions...or be a foremost player...sure you cna sound ok..but i prefer musicians who have actually practiced thier instruments....

  • @porpoisefathom What that guy means is that his approach to the guitar is not technical like Williams or in a sense the Romeros. I think with Williams first is the technical aspect of a piece, then comes interpretation. With the Segovia school, the technique is secondary: for example fingerings are chosen to make the music speak, rather than what's most ergonomic.

  • Do you give concerts? I'd love to see and hear you live. We'll be in USA, Utah in September 2010. If it happens that you'll give a concert then I'd so much love to come!

  • I seen many Classical guitar players from the Best to the amauter and Christopher Parkening is THE BEST SO FAR.

Thank you maestro for all the Joy!

  • I was fortunate enough to see him in concert many years ago. Such a brilliant guitarist!!

  • Hey may not be the most technical player out there, but I think his interpretive skills are second to none. His dynamic and tonal control are superb. He plays with beautiful expression, and has for several decades now. Undeniably one of the best classical guitarists of the 20th century, and he's still going.

  • I am a classical guitarist. gabeuop79, I also think Parkening is a great player with one exception - his interpreation of Bach. I think he still carries the unhappy attitude that started with Segovia (his teacher) who played Bach as if he was a romantic composer. Grave mistake. Other than that, yes I like Parkening's music. It is really good. M.

  • Bach had 20 children...who could be more "romantic" than that? ;)

  • @gabeuop79 Parkening not being technical? I agree with the rest that you write but I think that Parkenings technique is something that most accomplished guitarist would give their right foot for if not their right hand. Check out him performing Mozart - K 339 Solemn Vespers Laudate Dominum here at YT to see my point. But hes interpretative skill is his real strength as you write.

  • @gabeuop79

I would put CP's technical skills right up there with David Russell, Scott Tennant, John Williams, or anyone else. The difference is that Parkening sounds alive when he plays, not dead. Just because he doesn't sound dead doesn't mean he's not as technically proficient. Parkening is the best guitarist of all time in my opinion.

  • Chris Parkening is just awesome. He's not the absolute best classical guitarist to have ever lived, but man, what a great guy.

  • Seems like a nice enough guy. I am not religious but I do not have a problem with the man's belief and inspiration.

  • Chris is a very good friend of mine. He is very down to earth and a fine player.

  • Boo hoo. Cry me a river. Great. You atheists have nothing better to do than whine and dispute God's existence. Since I could care less about debating with you, you can whine all you want on YouTube's Christopher Parkening video clip without me. Congratulations on your accomplishment.

  • dodom if u were at juliard u wudnt say tht....ur obviously not a talent of the instrument for if you were, you would appreciate the contributions Christopher Parkening has made to the music community, and I highly doubt Maestro Andres Segovia ever asked you to take one of his master classes....

  • Pretty narrow-minded. Do you know every American classical guitarist?

  • Look, I told you about 1million times now on other forums that you should rid yourself of your God hating ways. CHRISTopher Parkening is one of Gods servants as I told you once before. And all of Gods servants always seem to be a cut ahead of the world. So get over it already!

  • typical christian self-centered arrogance. he became christian because he was pushed too hard and lost hi sense of purpose in life. Just because he's a prodigy and extremely musically intelligent doesnt mean that his faith is not absolutely ridiculous

  • And i guess to you the greatest of all Classical composers: J.S Bach, was ridiculous, because it is NO SECRET that the vast majority of his music was written with the sole purpose and intent to praise the same exact God that parkening serves.

  • lol.

Just because J.S. Bach was inspired by god does not mean that his musical genius or talent was BECAUSE of god. In other words, had medieval superstition (faith) not been the dominant philosophy in that era, he may have been inspired by humanism, the cosmos, or even (GASPPP) evolution...or a whole range of other ideas that have nothing to do with religion.

RELIGION DOES NOT CAUSE TALENT. When artists dedicate their works to god or thank god it is merely a psychological state.

  • Bach was a composer who will have been commisioned to compose sacred music, because (of course), that was where the money was. The same goes for most art produced at the time.

  • Sorry, but it seems to me that you have not had the pleasure to read a good Bach biographical book. Efforts have been (Only recently) made to paint J.S Bach as not a religius man at all. but the said efforts have ALL been unsuccesful because the evidence is too overwhelming attesting to the fact that his driving force and life motivation was the glory of God. He even taught Theology and Latin (the language to wich in his lifetime the bible was more prdominantly translated) in religius seminars

  • I'll tell you what's ridiculous: A man who thinks that life and all it's infinitly calculated complexities, is the result of nothing but the outcome of a succession of trillions and trillions and trilions of haphazard little "convinient" cosmic "random" accidents. Now THAT is ridiculous! My friend, there IS a purpose to life, there is accountability, and there ARE accounts to be turned in at the end of the road. Parkening understands that, and i hope someday you will too...

  • how dare you assume what I think? Atheism is a lack of belief not a belief system so keep your opinions to yourself. Just because the purpose to life is not GOD or RELIGION does not mean an Atheist does not find purpose in life. This is the most insulting and childish idea i have encountered from the religious. I cherish my moments because they are all ive got unlike christians who WANT TO DIE because they think our life is meaningless

  • J.S. Bach was a devout believer in God and he believed that the final aim of music should be to glorify God. It's of mine and many others' belief that God gave Bach a gift. You don't believe it? Oh well. Noone's forcing you to.

You prove your ignorance by stating that Christians "want to die," which is both false and absurd. Seriously, who do you think you are?

A conceited atheist who condemns people for their religious beliefs on YouTube doesn't have much to brag about.

  • the immodest person is the christian who claims modesty when he says he has god on his side, that he can tell people what to do and on what day how they should have sex and in what position, etc etc.

To answer your fallacious argument, I have to reiterate the following:

just because Bach believed in god and believed the point of music was to glorify god DOES NOT prove that had he lived in this day and age he would have believed the samer thing. Everyone believed in god back then.

  • But that's pure fantasy on your part. I can speculate as to what might happen if so-and-so were alive today and it won't affect anything because it doesn't have a basis in reality. The past already took place and there's no going back to change it. Moreover, nobody could prove that Bach would/wouldn't be a Christian if he were alive today, so it's pointless to elaborate.

  • but it doesnt matter if he was or wasnt christian because his making music and his genius are not correlated with his christian beliefs. Even if they inspired him, you cant prove its gods divinity that moved his hands. If they didnt, then it was still his mind which created the music without the help of god. Again, if he was born today, even if he was somehow a christian, it doesnt make his music CHRISTIAN music, its just religious music that he created while inspired by Christianity.

  • God doesn't answer to anyone. You use the word 'kill' but cannot prove that it was divine intervention that 'killed' them. As you're aware, this world is full of misery and sadness. Whether you believe in Him or not, you have to accept the hand you were dealt and play it to your choosing. This world is cruel and merciless, but God is merciful. The question is, why should God answer to his creation? What have you done that can compare with the sacrifice of Jesus? He suffered and died for you.
