The prophet did not personally order her death however when she was struck down by khalid ibn walid in front of her children the prophet said: "Two goats would not lock horns over her." There is also a case of a sahabi who killed his own father for insulting the prophet to which the prophet said nothing.

@ingehs This is just one hadith I quoted from Al Bukhari however there are several ahadeeth calling for the death of apostates in al Bukhari alone. This is also the position of all four schools of sunni Islam and the Jafari school of shia Islam. I think that is ample proof that the penalty for apostasy from Islam is death.
