  • Where did you get that tube amp? If you made it - how?

  • Looks neat too!

  • That tube amp sounds awesome. Now if I can only get my Motorola tube amp to sound this good. The only thing I don't like about tube amps is they are not portable like transistor amps. How loud can you play that tube amp on those speakers before something pops or will that even happen?

  • @coondogtheman1234 If I turn it up all the way, it just distorts a little. It's pretty hard to hurt a well designed tube amp by over-driving though. Most tube based guitar amps get their trademark distortion that way.

  • Is it possible to add a subwoofer and then have a 2.0 bookshelf speaker added to the subwoofer? If it does work will it matter if i put the subwoofer on the left or right output?

  • @abekim7 Most powered subwoofers have speaker level inputs and outputs. So you can run the amp into the sub, and then hook the bookshelf speakers to the outputs on the back of the sub.

  • @Maxxarcade thx for the reply I was just wondering because some songs have certain sounds only coming from the left or the right side. However it seems like since you said the subwoofer has "inputs/outputs" there will be multiple outputs/inputs so I can add the left and right side for the subwoofer.

  • @abekim7 Yep, the sub should have inputs and outputs for both channels. It will combine the left and right for the bass, but will leave them separate for the outputs to the bookshelf speakers.

  • i have the same amp as this running 2 x 200w 3 way 12 inch speakers and the amp itself is powered from a 12v 4amp power supply and it doesnt cut out at 70% volume and you can even bridge these amps to run a single speaker in stereo mode

  • I asked you a question (on my old youtube account ricardo1e93) to see if this amp was good for a cheap amp.

I want to say that this amp is the best and cheap mini amp I've ever ear before. Excellent value for a very low price. It also has a good integrated circuit (TriPath TA2020-20 digital amp).

To take full advantage of this performance, I recommend to have a strong power suply (3000 mA at least), just for having no distortions due to a lack of power.

This is an amazing little amplifier!!

  • Can you power that with a car battery? Maybe run it with a 12 volt battery charger? Any number of those could probably power that little amp effectively.

  • @donbehatin A battery would work well, but a charger does not have enough regulation or filtering for audio use. It would cause a lot of hum, or possibly supply too much voltage.

  • @Maxxarcade Ahh... after I thought about it for a minute I came to that conclusion as well. I don't think the 14.7 volts a vehicle charging system runs at would hurt the Lepai, but a charger might. I've never actually put a multimeter on one.

So has this proved a good testbed amplifier? My MCS 2240 has lost all output and produces a strange clicking sound, (filter caps?) so I need a new beater amplifier.

  • @donbehatin It does work well for what it is. Especially at 2 to 4 ohms per channel. 8 ohms sounds fine but there is not much power due to the limited amount of voltage swing it can deliver.

  • @Maxxarcade I see. Thank you.

  • bass test? :DD

  • Damn, your camera picks up low tones very well

  • I'm seriously impressed. That tiny thing could move those huge speakers pretty well, I mean for being a cheap chinese mini amp. I was like "oh, nice looking mini amp hooked up to HOLLY CRAP".

  • In this video you power two large speakers, do you think there would be any problems powering 6-8 very small speakers?

  • @jsmbc101 As long as you don't go below 2 ohms per channel, it should be fine.

  • @Maxxarcade Thank you for your help. I will have 6 ohms on each channel.

  • @jsmbc101 The amp works best at 2-4 ohms per channel, but 6 will be ok. You will just lose some available power. The amp has limited voltage swing, so power drops off quick above 4 ohms.

  • what is this song its kinda legit!

  • I have one of these little lepai amps and i have to say its one of the worst piece of crap amps i ever heard.

  • @TheElectricnoob They are picky about speakers and not very clean sounding, but still a great test amp for the price really.

  • okay so im a girl and bought sum bookshelf speakers but you can only wires it comes with is speaker wire...would this connect to this also? im confused lol

  • you may ask why i am doing this, but basically i am buying 4 wharfdale diamond 10.1s for my studio that i am building, but i need an amp to power them and i don't want to use my denon amp that i use for my bedroom and am thinking of using one of these but a 4 channel one, and i'm willing to pay up to 70 pounds (100 dollars) for a decent one, is it a good investment? as i want to have all my stuff in the studio wall mounted, and this will go perfect on the wall, do you recommend?

  • @johnybm1984 Not sure how it would sound on something like that. I wouldn't call it studio-grade. It is good for what it costs though! I've never used the 4 channel ones. The thing that makes this one special is the cost of about $25, and how well it performs for being so cheap.

  • where did you get this amp and do you think this will work good to use because im making a homemade boombox and i need a good amp this is a little small

  • @xNickerishx I got it at Parts Express. There are some larger models you can get, but this is the best deal for the money. If you use 4 ohm speakers it sounds pretty good.

  • @Maxxarcade thanks i might try it for my boombox

  • 2nd song is - Ride - Luke Chable & Danny Bonnici

  • @Ruchira88 Thank you for your informationes about the songs ... Perhaps you know also the rest of this songs? I am really need the name of the last song ... Regards

  • @ChipprofisDyndnsOrg I have identified that song by using shazam. its a music tag app free for android. I have other songs too but I didnt caught them. sorry :(

  • @ChipprofisDyndnsOrg I found the last song finally.. just took me 5 god damn months lol

Michael Burns pres. Blue Haze - Into Nothing (Hamel's Last Time for 9 Mix)

Download link (not the same exact version)

  • @Knaeckebrotsaege It is just unbelievable! I am really THANK you :D This day today will be my new birthday because I also called over 5 month at this last song and actually you found it. Yeah it is not exact the same but better than nothing :D Thank you and I will you this song for to test new repaired s750 :D Best regards

  • @ChipprofisDyndnsOrg kein problem :D!

  • @Knaeckebrotsaege Now that you mention that song, I think it's on iTunes as well. On the Michael Burns album called This Is Everybody Too.

  • Hey maxxarcade Im going to hook this up for my computer power supply 12V rail! Will it be a problem ?

    Thanks

  • @Ruchira88 Should work fine, just make sure you get the polarity right.

  • @Maxxarcade Thanks :)

  • @Maxxarcade I have got the amp from ebay today and hooked it with computer supply and powered up but its unusable. It produces strange noise like hissing sound and when turning up the volume noise gets higher and I can only turn it up for like 2/10 before relay kicks off. But with tone control off I can increase volume for about 6/10 before relay goes off and sound is really distorted at that volume because of the noise. :( crazy thing is it produces noise when I scroll mouse lol. any idea? Thx

  • @ruchira1991 The power supply in your computer must be putting out a lot of noise. You could try adding a noise filter, otherwise you will probably need to use the power supply that came with it. Does it work OK on its own power supply?

  • @Maxxarcade Thanks for the reply maxxarade :) I bought it without the power supply. And now I have tried it with the 500mA power adapter which came with my wifi router and works absolutely fine :) Yes I bought my power supply (450W) and casing brand new for about $25 bucks :P And it might be really shitty but im using it since last 3 years :) So I have decided to get new power supply and went ahead and bought 5A low noise SMPS from ebay for $19 free shipping :)

    Thanks for help

  • @Ricardo1e93 It's great for what it is, especially with lower impedance speakers. It won't match a big amp though.

  • cool video, thanks for posting this. I'm looking at getting a little T-amp, so far i prefer the look of the Muse M50 but really only because i know it has bridged outputs which is what im after. Do you know if the lepai has bridged outputs?

  • @xDavieSx No, this can't be bridged.

  • @Ricardo1e93 The EAW subs are rated at 800w each RMS. Not sure what the peak is. The drivers are 18 inch RCF L18P200N. The Cerwin Vegas are rated at 255 watts each.

  • Hi Maxxarcade. Thank you for testing the Lepai mini amp :) Great "loud" sound :) but your tube amp is much better ... Do you know the name of the two songs you used to test your tube and mini amp? Really thank you for that

  • @ChipprofisDyndnsOrg I'm not sure what songs they were. I never looked at the screen while the music was playing.

  • @Maxxarcade Ok :( but thank you for your answer :) Perhaps you will find out it and post it too if this music is playing again ;) I am looking forward to see more of your great tests, repairs and stuff like that :) Regards

  • cool little AMP. BTW i kinda like some of those songs

  • I've got a custom amp that me and my dad built (our first project). It's driving 4 bang and olufson 75w speakers (can't remember the model). Uses a similar chip to this one.. it sounds fantastic.

  • "all that crap" xD

  • I bought a DTA-1 Tamp last year, when I got it, I hooked it to a pair of Sound Tech ST-12 PA speakers, while you could stand to be in front of the speakers, you didn't want to stay there long. I have a video up of that being done.

@uxwbill video request, when you dig your big Kenwood speakers out for the garage, make a video of cranking them with the DTA-1

  • I picked up one of those lapai amplifiers today at parts express, I happened to stop in there and found one on clearance for 13 dollars. So i bought it up.

Man, you wernt kidding. these things hit hard. They drive a pair of 12" subwoofers in a bandpass box (car audio) without hesitation.

  • @THEtechknight Wow, 13 dollars? That's about half of what I paid.

  • @Maxxarcade Yep, it was open box and had a couple scuffs on the face. That is why. But i bought it anyway, and it worked just fine. Came with a vonage power cord. 12v 2 amp.

  • @THEtechknight Yep, same one I have :-)

I just think they are handy. Lotsa power for the size. There are much more powerful ones about the same size, but they cost a lot more.

  • @Maxxarcade I got mine for $5.00 with free shipping on ebay

  • @TheCatMilton Gotta love awesome deals. I should grab a spare or two at that price if I come across them.

  • @THEtechknight I'd like to find one of the high powered T amps, or to find an example of a receiver that used Tripath amplifier ICs. As it is, the tiddly little DTA-100 can easily match my smaller Technics receivers. It's funny and shocking at the same time to see it comfortably driving large stereo speakers from 8xAA batteries!

  • @uxwbill I thought i seen a video of yours you bought bookshelf speakers with a built in T-amp? maybe that was another youtube user. I cant rememeber.

Ya its about as powerful as a vintage receiver, but they certainly are not as good/clear sounding as a vintage receiver. Thats for sure.

  • Would you recommend that amp? And where can I buy one?

BTW: I love your videos! Keep up the great work!

  • @seansy59 It's ok for testing, but it can't compete with a real amp at higher volume. It's about $24 at Parts Express or Ebay I think.

  • why are u getting rid of your valve amp?? its so nice :(

  • @benno6664 I need the money to fix my house and update some stuff.

  • I really love tubeamps! My dad actually got a Argon Tubeamp with a pair of Bowers & Wilkins headphones... i could only guess what this cost.. :D

  • use a car batt and car charger at least 30 amp it will still top out under the load maby ?

  • Tubelove!! :D

  • ya these lapai amps use the tripath class-D chip which is no longer in production, company is long gone. Grab those ICs while you can. We need to build one massive tube amplifier for DJ usage. that would be neat.

  • +1 for tube amps. I could tell the difference right away, even with my crappy headphones I am using on my PC to listen on youtube.

  • @THEtechknight I wish I could have stood in front of the speakers when I was running the tube amp, so the full treble could be heard. I didn't want to trip over the wires though.

  • @Maxxarcade Ya, wires running across the floor do present trip hazards. Thats how my room is now, which is in the basement.

I only have 1 outlet where my PC is, and in order to plug my fans and modem in, there are cords + powerstrip wires strung across the room. been too lazy to clean it up. work has kept me really busy.

  • I love your vids man!You are the BEST!!!

  • It sounds great for what it is, of course it can't compare to the tub amp. I could feel the bass even thru the little cheap JVC bookshelf speakers I have here.

  • nicey

  • What's the song name(s)? :D

    nice video again Maxxarcade!

  • @locationnorway Not sure, I wasn't watching the screen while it was playing.

  • Im now going to get one of these as well!

  • so what's will the price be on this one ?

  • @rezident13n You can get these at Parts Express for around $20.

  • Found some mods for the Lepai amp over on the diyAudio forums.. look up TA2020..

  • @68Grease Ya, I've been reading through that. Hard to believe how many versions of this amp there were!

  • @Maxxarcade I been looking around for a little project amp to setup for my computer.. I have notice that there are a few difference versions myself.. Seams to be a good little amp to play around with..

  • Any chance of damaging the tube amp powering these oversized speakers?

  • @agoodm nope.

  • @agoodm No, it has output taps for 4, 8, or 16 ohms. The physical size of the speakers doesn't matter as long as you match the impedance.

  • Great Stuff!

  • Sounds GREAT. I've got to get me one of these little jewels! Excellent video, keep them coming!

  • @bigdwiz They are not that great on 8 ohm speakers, and have a bit of a gritty sound. Nonetheless, they are great for testing stuff or casual/portable listening.

  • @Maxxarcade Have you tried the amp w/ a 12v battery instead of the power supply? Specs say around 20w/ch at 4ohms, have you measured voltage output? There is another guy here on youtube Jamesstargate1 who's built several boomboxes with these little Lepai amps.

  • @bigdwiz I don't have a battery to try, but I hope to do that soon, along with a bigger DC power supply if I find one.

  • good video as always :D
