fuck me i remember some guy came to my house when i was just starting high school with a program called maths magic, similiar to the khan academy exercise dashboard starting from grade 1 - 12. It cost about $9000 which my parents didn't have. Now i'm in university and this shit is out for FREE!! xD
Khan Academy is a gift. I can't understand the critics saying crap like that won't get you a job for instance. What kind of stupid argument is that? I like this site a lot, thanks to the team that made this possible!

I never studied for a math test, or at least not much, I wanted to see what I capture from class, watch the results in the exam and master my deficiencies I didn't really care about my grades, I care about my knowledge.
To say that Sal is fantastic is an understatement! I have personally completed all his lessons on advanced calculus and linear algebra and, believe me, this guy is the pied piper of mathematics. He can explain the most complex topics such that almost anyone can undersatnd them. He should be in charge of all teaching in the US and the world. If he were, the productivity level of humanity would skyrocket. Sal is a humble genius who is doing a world of good. Good luck to him!
The idea is wonderful. However, as a teacher myself, I worry about the students who have no access to internet or even a computer at home let alone watch Youtube videos. These are the students that are struggling at school and at home on a daily basis. I do think that Sal's idea is very innovative, but will be extremely difficult to implement in certain area with socioeconomic problems.
Hey Government, I've got an idea, how about not spending billions of pounds on stupid smart-boards which don't even begin to engage us, and instead donate that wasted money into Sal's dream, I'd rather be learning from Sal than 'interacting' on a so called smart board.
I love the concept of Khan Academy, but I wonder if it will work as well for subjects such as history, literature, and English composition, where the ability to write essays and term papers is important.
@Shift4chizzle teaching profession shall become a thing people study in History books. Teachers shall eventually become extinct and all people shall have to teach themselves/
I truly believe that our American students are not "stupid" they just lack interest in education. Once again this is not because they are dumb in anyway, it's because a majority of the time the are being "taught" by passionless tenured individuals who also lack interest in education. I stand behind Sal and all his workings.
It just makes more sense! You don't really get to ask questions during lecture and when you go home to do homework there is nobody there to help you out.
@MEGIDIOT they never referenced "country" in that statistic. that aside, if shanghai were a country, it'd be more populous than belgium. it's the most populated city in the world...

@VmanLee that sort of thing has always been the case. every age has more use for some talents and less for others. when society considers a talent useful to itself, it rewards those who have it, while others have to fall back on basic skills like delivery jobs to make a living. back in the day, actors were despised. those with brilliant mathematical ability lived as poor scholars or teachers. now the latter group is relatively better off, but the social status of entertainers has skyrocketed.
I have watched heaps of Sal's videos before. Today I was sitting in Biology and my friend and I were watching one of his video because our teacher didn't explain it well. Now we get it!
i learned more in math than i ever did in school. i learned through khan enough to pass my calculus test for biology majoring..... i had forgotten everything up to that point. i had to go back and learn long division.
i mean i dont understand how stupid people on youtube doing stupid things on youtube gets millions of views AND gets paid for doing so and a guy like him who is doing such unselfish deed has only couple of tens of thousands of views per video. My INTUITIVE is that lots of people are dumb.
The biggest barrier will be the governments themselves. The dumbing down of our children is no accident. Ignorant people are much easier to control than the educated.

@ChillProductions1 Khan Academy is a good idea, but if you have lecture based learning from home 1) it standardized everyone to learning the exact same lecture, which doesn't foster diverse education 2) Home environment can be distracting for sub-par students, and if they don't learn the basic at home, how would they do the homework at school 3) classroom based homework can put unwanted pressure on students to finish within an allotted time, whereas traditional homework gives them more time
1) Not necessarily a bad thing, I recall having a disjointed math education, sometimes having a great engaging teacher, and other times having a teacher who was the complete opposite, or worse very difficult to understand.
2) A challenge for homework / traditional based schooling as well, videos can be listened to at school though
3) Well, it's pretty much at their own pace, and pressure to finish within allot time is a necessary skill to develop anyways.
My algebra teacher was better than Sal because he taught good learning habits as well as algebra. On the other hand, as with any hierarchical form of knowledge, once you got behind it was very difficult - but not impossible - to get caught up again. There is a point of no return where it is impossible to catch up with the course, but that usually doesn't happen.
This is an extremely good idea that should work very well. The main issue is that how are these students going to transfer the way they learn at these school onto post high school education such as University where this teaching method is not used.
Sal needs to stay true to his grass roots. I think his life story is awesome, he wants to help and is proving he can. Sal, remember why you helped your cousins and continue to apply that to your ".org "
Great work Sal, I watch your video to help myself, I am 34 years of age.
Barriers are only the interest of the students. The students , unfortunately, select themselves and no amount of social engineering will change natural percentages. The Ben guy was all about money and Dylan is just stuck at a bad network. Sal is bigger than them both because of his dedicated focus on content. The guy is always talking about problems and equations. Schools fail cuz morale is low because of race baiting by teachers and by media like MSNBC. it's why Khan is a better place
I wish i went to that school but all im concerned about as a highschool student is how does this flow into applications for college if all i have is a progress bar and no grade
this assumes that all homes are wired. some students may not be. Also it is great for children that are proactive but I can see some that will coast and skip the video lectures. But great that this is starting to come to many people's attention that we need to focus on education.
I think for people of lower economic levels --computers and internet should be part of a benefits system--along with food stamps, health care--& maybe even an economic electric car that could be issued --so that poor, low income people could have transportation and not be overly dependent on bus schedules etc..
Sorry I wasn't trying to "hit any mark" I was expressing my thoughts- and I don't think the car idea is bad--also I think you are rude-and I don't appreciate your put down.
This is style of learning and setup is good for adults too--many adults around now --were those kids & not really always that long ago--who lacked structure at home, or had dysfunction, or were slower learners & failed or just barely passed--- we should not lose faith in people once they pass twenty one and condemn them to a life of menial jobs & ignorance we should promote learning at all levels--and this style can help adults who may not learn as well in the traditional way.
I'm in my second advanced math class and near the top thanks to Sal...More often than not, I find myself explaining to other students how to approach problems and concepts they should have learned in pre-calculus and calculus I, concepts they should have learned mastering the homework, lately I just refer them to KA...IMO corporations are prepared to donate like Google and Bill Gates have, but Sal has to continue to scale up and teachers unions have to be willing to break the mold...
I am 2nd year undergraduate student, and I love your idea Khan, being able to master topics seems to be the most important thing. I would love to see some changes in educational system at the university level, but then again, universities basically exist only for credentials because it does not matter how you study the material, the only thing that matters is the grade on the transcript.
Sal, you are a hero to not only me but hundreds and thousands of others around the world. I don't understand why they make top entrepreneurs and actors people of the year. It's people like you that deserve such recognition,
So much truth in what he's saying. All schools care about are test grades, because that's how they get larger budgets. With this method, EVERYONE will do well, and EVERYONE will succeed.
listening to his videos i always thought he was black..

So much truth in what he's saying. All schools care about are test grades, because that's how they get larger budgets. With this method, EVERYONE will do well, and EVERYONE will succeed.
