Would you ever have to be concerned with blocking the spring from outside contamination if you were using it as drinking water? Or would you personally say (no liability, no recommendation) that you yourself would not be too concerned?
If i saw houses or a road or pasture above a spring i wanted to drink from after developing it ,i would put in berms to divert run off above it and get it tested as well.
When it is woods above it and high in the land where the spring comes out I am less likely to be concerned about those measures.
Fun to think about the crayfish, all a part of the flow.

That is a very site specific consideration.
