  • Undervolt it (Google on how to do it) and it will run cooler, so the fan won't run so high.

UNDERVOLTING DOES NOT MEAN UNDERCLOCKING. Your laptop will not slow down or perform and slower by undervolting.

  • my hp dv6000, the fan was so loud that i have to turn 80% the volume to listen to what you said in the video

  • how loud is too loud? cause i just got mine for christmas and yeah the fan is not quiet but i guess i could live with it but i just whant to know if the noise is because there is a problem or thats just the way it is. oh and recently there has been this grinding noise (it comes and goes). idk if i should get it check or it thats normal...

  • fan is barely making noise barely surfing the web, I turn on WoW and the fan gets louder because it uses almost 800,000k memory. Turn off those shitty programs that you have on, the fan will be quieter.

  • just got mine today, its loud when i play ANY GAME that i have the better gfx option selected

  • PROGRAMS THAT TAKE LOTS OF MEMORY MAKE THE FAN LOUDER, YOU DUMBASS.

  • @Omaso1 wtf dude no they dont???

  • Fan controllers, regular problem.

Probably the thermistors are a bit faulty not giving the selected resistance at given temperature.

And this results as the fan spins when it doesn't need to.

  • Maybe its your laptop, i am using an xps and its the quietest laptop i've owned! fan never gets loud...

I will give you one bit of advice, however; on the sidebar, if you have any widgets measuring your gpu statistics, the fan keeps getting loud and quiet in short cycles and it gets annoying. Just don't use any gpu monitoring widgets / software

  • @az015 what xps have u got

  • @0ChrisMackle0 its an xps L502x with an i7 2.00ghz procesor

  • lol... watching this with my laptop I can't even hear your loud fan because my loud fan overtops my laptop's speakers! ^^

  • well, what you expected... it has a core i7 and a strong nVidia! but, actually, I didn't notice any loud noise from that fan...

  • if i do nothing - program speedfan 4.39 -

    gpu - 48 c

    hdd - 40 c

    core 0 - 35 c

    core 1 - 36 c

    core 2 - 28 c

    core 3 - 28 c

    core 4 - 29 c

good working laptop without problems , and it loud when i playing games , try to change thermopaste ;)

  • @3dimon3 speedfan 4.39 XPS L502X gt540m and the i7 processor + im using cryo lx the best notebook cooler while playing gpu 70c hdd 45c core 0- 80 c core 1- 84 c core 2 -87 c core 3 86 c temp 1 - 88 c temp 2 - 89 c overheats all the time and i dont no any xps l502 versions that have 5 cores
  • @rolandrebase that shows in that program , i have 740 qm , 435 gt and i have l501x , like on this video

  • you need a 2nd gen. processor, that will fix it:)

  • my xps got no problem, you are so unlucky

  • @dummyzacky mine too ,yes its lowder than dual core but 4 quad processor im expect this ;)

  • if your laptop is running hot when its idle, then you do have an issue...if you're using high process applications....then use your brain it will spin up and be loud...

  • I had a Dell Inspiron n5010, with the same problem, the same procesor i7, 740qm. Even if the procesor temperature was only 50-60 grades, it was very loud. I couldn`t watch a movie.... Than i had a problem, it had 90-100 grades. I send it in service, and thei changed Heat-sink pipes. I saw that those models have this problem with cooling. Sell it, and buy another model. I bought an Asus k93sv, i7 sandy bridge. But it doesn`t sound like hell. AND it has the same price with a dell. But it`s better

  • Does the fan get triggered by the heat inside of the laptop? If it does, would external fans actually help the laptop cool? Wouldn't it also make an equivalent noise as what is said to be bothering him? I don't have this laptop but I am thinking of getting one...

  • Dude, to tell you the truth.. those CPU usage apps which show the temp and shit are actually the ones which boost the fans TRUST me uninstall em and see the difference... I'd installed one of those on my xps and it made my laptop go crazy...

  • Just buy a laptop cooling fan at target/bestbuy/walmart/etc. I own a dell studio xps 1640 for 3 years now and that laptop got pretty warm. When I bought a cooling fan, my laptop was always cool to the touch and my internal laptop fan didn't need to spin anymore.

  • Not sure if you have the SSD or the HDD, but the SSD has no spinning parts and it is very fast. Which makes your processor get very very hot. My xps is on order, but I have the adamo now and it has a tiny quiet fan. Which is inadequate and after a year the heat caused the solder where the plug goes to break down, and it eventually shorted out my mother board which was a $400 fix. I am curious if that is why the heftier fan was used. With JBL speakers Im not too worried about the fan noise.

  • get a ssd fan hardly needs to run at all best upgrade i have done

  • put it your arctic silver 5 thermal paste was cool down?

  • i have d same laptop its quiet normal for d laptop. i would suggest use the laptop in power safe mode that reduces the fans noise to a lot of extent.

the reason why for this is because it does not have and air inlet port its down at bottom thats not enough for the laptop to cool which makes the fan run like a bitch nd it makes sound. mine is a 9 cell battery so it provides better ventilation.

moreover its a power house so dnt expect a beast to be silent. macbooks are costly overated bitches.

  • learn to live with it, if you want a quiet pc, buy one with 0 performance

  • I'm 90% sure it has to do with Nvidia graphics card

  • Hey Drew - I have an XPS 15 L502X with Sandy Bridge, top of the range and the fan noise is sending me up the wall. I nearly bought a Macbook Pro but instead my girlfriend did - but I stuck with Windows and Dell because of work applications. I've had a dell technician come round and replace the fan...(the first one was clicking as well as loud)....her Mac is silent, my Dell is so loud...it is very very annoying and I wont be buying again...

  • @jamesheaven96909 I completely understand what you're saying. I've had so many service call with the XPS. I can't believe other people are not complaining about the issues we're having. My MacBook Air and Pro is dead silent compared to the XPS. I can't even sell the XPS now because I will lose so much money on it. I should have just spend the extra money to buy the MacBook Pro from the beginning.

  • @drewpark1 lol your comparing a mac book air with an i7 pc seriously the mac book air doesnt even have fans lol and the processor is 1/4 of the power of the i7 without making notice that the dell laptop probably has a video card about 5 times more powerful than the mb air. so you are making a dumb statement comparing them, its like comparing a bycle with the noise of a ram truck.

  • @pkm4ni4k You are totally right!

  • @drewpark1 $600 + for a quiet fan, no thanks, XPS 15 is just better at everything else, not to mention the price diference, mac's are so overpriced, and the fan isn't even that loud

  • youre an idiot... lol the fan is gonna be loud on this laptop, I have it too...

  • @Gibbs5893 Well it shouldn't be that way. Call up the Dell support team. They will help you out and if it's bad, they will replace it for you.

  • @drewpark1 thanks!

  • @drewpark1 how did you notice that the LCD PANEL was not the right one?

  • @vtech2608 I looked at the specs of the replacement.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you think thats loud...... come borrow my hp pavilion 6810eg and then you'll have something to complain about, i mean shit, you have a quad core laptop, what'd you expect?

  • @zaknology Other Quad Core notebooks are not this loud and annoying. I can't even bring it into my presentations for work.

  • @drewpark1 Excactly... My little bro has a laptop from mm-vision with slightly better specs. It's a helluvalot thinner and still it doesn't get nearly as hot and the fan noise is unnoticable.

  • How did you get a replacement, I have temps of more than 70 degrees & the Dell Manager says its normal..!!!

Can please suggest me in what I have to do.

    Thanks..!!!

  • @heartsurfer008 Ask for service. If they don't solve the problem after so many times, you should be qualified for a replacement.

  • On 1st September 2011, I have also received my Dell XPS L502x with core I5, 6 GB RAM, 1 GB video card. I have experiencing fan noise issue with this system.

I talked with Dell support but not fixed.

    any solution?

otherwise i think i should go for refund or replacement.

  • DELETE Google Chrome if you want your privacy back. It saves more information than you may think!

  • Dumb american retard D:D:D:DL 3rd replacement laptop... omfg... dude how dumb r u ? Maybe its your retarded fingers or brains that causes the problems ? :D:D not the dell ... lol

  • @lalatart89 very funny

  • dude go to power options and advanced settings . then go to minimum processor state and put it to 1 percent . put the system cooling policy to passive mode and you're good to go. Oh save the options before you leave :). I had the same problem, it worked .

  • use ccleaner to completely remove the old drivers and install the new one directly from nvidia.

  • You could try downloading MSI Afterburner and manually set fan rpm... it's easy.

  • How do i notice if i received the correct LCD monitor?

  • the only time the fan on my l501x goes full speed is while running a game, it always slows down if im just on the interwebs.

i also normally have it sitting on a targus lap chill because this thing can get pretty hot

  • Download the nvidia graphics card overclock program then open it and their will be a slider titled "fan" drag it left and it will slow the fan down

  • i know whats wrong with it. its the intel turbo boost coz when it boosts itself it boosts the fan and the boosting of cpu is automatic so its turning on and off.

  • Edit: Lauris not Kauris ;)

  • Kauris is right. You need to update your graphics card drivers. Problem solved!

  • update graphic card drivers.

    1. go and delete the old drivers via the device manager.

    2. install new drivers by pressing install drivers and choose search the internet option

    3. thats it you fixed it!

hope worked on yours machine :]

  • @lauris15151 Thanks! I'll be trying your solution out this weekend. I'll post up an update later on.

  • @lauris15151 I reinstalled the updated nvidia drivers again, but it's still noisy and loud.

  • @drewpark1 k, it could be that the fan isnt attached properly, or it could be that it is naturally loud, i will see coz i am waiting for my xps 15.

  • @drewpark1 On 1st September 2011, I have also received my Dell XPS L502x with core I5, 6 GB RAM, 1 GB video card. I have experiencing fan noise issue with this system.

I talked with Dell support but not fixed.

    any solution?

  • @nasirse I would wait for driver updates or ask to have service done on your computer.

  • need a quick advice. Have you guys seen the xps 17? does it look and feel a lot bulkier than the xps 15? will need this laptop for the weekend at the library and occassional trips. Just the 17 inch screen is so tempting.

  • @yawattah Yes, the xps 17 is nice. However, it is going to bulky and heavy to carry around. If you need a 17 inch, I would consider a Macbook Pro 17" with Boot Camp or Parallels installed with Windows 7 or an HP Envy.

  • had the same problem with my xps. I understand, that it is a performance monster, but if i dont do anything with my laptop and it is still noisy, it is not acceptable, so i sent mine back and have now again alot of money. But its a pitty, except of the fan, the dell xps is an amazing notebook, i have never seen a screen and speakers like this before in a notebook.

  • Honestly if you don't like dell support go and buy a warranty at microcenter and they will fix your computer.

  • @sodazv06 I like Dell Support. They've been response to my computer issues which is why they've replaced my XPS 15 three times already. Microcenter is good, but they are not in the Pacific Northwest. However, Fry's is pretty much the same.

  • its cuz the 1st gen i7 made the fans work like crazy for no reason

  • @ForBolaCurve I agree with you

  • i had older xps 15 and it was very loud too, athough temparatures are at normal levels, fan starts spinning fast very often....hated it...

  • loud? you've gotta be kidding

  • @andrewtay85 I have had 3 XPS 15 replacements addressing this problem. It's annoying calling Support, sending in the computer, wait for the depot to confirm that something is indeed wrong, wait some more, and finally 3 weeks later receive another computer.

  • my XPS does that too. dell has too sensative sensors. same model. DO NOT BUY ANOTHER DELL UNLESS YOU WANT TO DEAL WITH SUPPORT! Dell is the least reliable laptop manufacturer according to Consumer Reports magazine. Toshiba is the most reliable.

  • @TOGA4808 lol i've had my dell inspiron 1520 for over 3years now and it didn't give me 1 piece of trouble

  • @eivis13 You must be a lucky man to not have any problems. You should research online to see how many problems had with the XPS m1330...heating, heatsink, video card problems...it's a pretty well known issue.

  • @eivis13 yes. old dells are good. anything post 2009 is bad. according to the december 2010 and may 2011 consumer reports they are now the least reliable in laptops.

  • @TOGA4808 I concur with that statement

  • haha it's not that bad, just make believe you're at the beach and it's the waves you're hearing :)

  • @eujeeves that's funny

  • Can't hear it

  • You complain about a loud fan, but you don't even bother to change your ugly background.

  • its fine based on what it house inside.

  • its fine

  • I can't hear your fan over the sound of how loud my fan actually is. You have no problem dude

  • how can anyone even notice fan noises, some might as well be disturbed by breathing noises :D

  • Doesn't sound that loud?

  • dude i have the xps 17, same basic design, i have the gt 555M card and yea the fan comes on sometimes and is noticeable, but its a performance laptop dont expect it to be quiet

  • Comment removed

  • loud fan noise, lol.

dude you have a high performance laptop, what do you expect?

  • @mazurkfsflip Really? I have other "high performance" laptops and they're not as loud or hot as my xps 15

  • @drewpark1 every laptop is different, and that is not loud look at desktops they are all noisy and stop lying that u have other high performance laptops i know u dont :)

  • @gggman15 That's funny. I guess my Alienware M18x isn't "high performance" enough for you. Even my Macbook Pro performs better than this laptop. When you are manufacturing any mass produced laptop, the experience and quality has to consistent. Yes, there are going to be some laptops that will have some issues. Many XPS 15 owners are having quality issues such as this.

  • @drewpark1 if u had these laptops u would not care so stop lying :)

  • You have one of the quad core CPUs. Intel didn't update them to 32nm for some reason so they will produce more heat and they have 2 more cores than dual cores so they make more heat. I have also heard of the xps 15 having a loud fan so ignore it unless it ramps up beyond your 'normal' noise level.

  • it's normal with those dell laptops.

  • @XxShuushiixX I don't think so

  • Loud fan noise?isnt that normal?

Its just the settings or something, not really a hardware problem,at least you dont have that clicking sound....

Maybe update your BIOS or use a fan control program?
