how loud is too loud? cause i just got mine for christmas and yeah the fan is not quiet but i guess i could live with it but i just whant to know if the noise is because there is a problem or thats just the way it is. oh and recently there has been this grinding noise (it comes and goes). idk if i should get it check or it thats normal...
fan is barely making noise barely surfing the web, I turn on WoW and the fan gets louder because it uses almost 800,000k memory. Turn off those shitty programs that you have on, the fan will be quieter.
Maybe its your laptop, i am using an xps and its the quietest laptop i've owned! fan never gets loud...
I will give you one bit of advice, however; on the sidebar, if you have any widgets measuring your gpu statistics, the fan keeps getting loud and quiet in short cycles and it gets annoying. Just don't use any gpu monitoring widgets / software
@3dimon3 speedfan 4.39 XPS L502X gt540m and the i7 processor + im using cryo lx the best notebook cooler while playing gpu 70c hdd 45c core 0- 80 c core 1- 84 c core 2 -87 c core 3 86 c temp 1 - 88 c temp 2 - 89 c overheats all the time and i dont no any xps l502 versions that have 5 cores
if your laptop is running hot when its idle, then you do have an issue...if you're using high process applications....then use your brain it will spin up and be loud...
I had a Dell Inspiron n5010, with the same problem, the same procesor i7, 740qm. Even if the procesor temperature was only 50-60 grades, it was very loud. I couldn`t watch a movie.... Than i had a problem, it had 90-100 grades. I send it in service, and thei changed Heat-sink pipes. I saw that those models have this problem with cooling. Sell it, and buy another model. I bought an Asus k93sv, i7 sandy bridge. But it doesn`t sound like hell. AND it has the same price with a dell. But it`s better
Does the fan get triggered by the heat inside of the laptop? If it does, would external fans actually help the laptop cool? Wouldn't it also make an equivalent noise as what is said to be bothering him? I don't have this laptop but I am thinking of getting one...
Dude, to tell you the truth.. those CPU usage apps which show the temp and shit are actually the ones which boost the fans TRUST me uninstall em and see the difference... I'd installed one of those on my xps and it made my laptop go crazy...
Just buy a laptop cooling fan at target/bestbuy/walmart/etc. I own a dell studio xps 1640 for 3 years now and that laptop got pretty warm. When I bought a cooling fan, my laptop was always cool to the touch and my internal laptop fan didn't need to spin anymore.
Not sure if you have the SSD or the HDD, but the SSD has no spinning parts and it is very fast. Which makes your processor get very very hot. My xps is on order, but I have the adamo now and it has a tiny quiet fan. Which is inadequate and after a year the heat caused the solder where the plug goes to break down, and it eventually shorted out my mother board which was a $400 fix. I am curious if that is why the heftier fan was used. With JBL speakers Im not too worried about the fan noise.
i have d same laptop its quiet normal for d laptop. i would suggest use the laptop in power safe mode that reduces the fans noise to a lot of extent.
the reason why for this is because it does not have and air inlet port its down at bottom thats not enough for the laptop to cool which makes the fan run like a bitch nd it makes sound. mine is a 9 cell battery so it provides better ventilation.
moreover its a power house so dnt expect a beast to be silent. macbooks are costly overated bitches.
Hey Drew - I have an XPS 15 L502X with Sandy Bridge, top of the range and the fan noise is sending me up the wall. I nearly bought a Macbook Pro but instead my girlfriend did - but I stuck with Windows and Dell because of work applications. I've had a dell technician come round and replace the fan...(the first one was clicking as well as loud)....her Mac is silent, my Dell is so loud...it is very very annoying and I wont be buying again...
@jamesheaven96909 I completely understand what you're saying. I've had so many service call with the XPS. I can't believe other people are not complaining about the issues we're having. My MacBook Air and Pro is dead silent compared to the XPS. I can't even sell the XPS now because I will lose so much money on it. I should have just spend the extra money to buy the MacBook Pro from the beginning.

@drewpark1 lol your comparing a mac book air with an i7 pc seriously the mac book air doesnt even have fans lol and the processor is 1/4 of the power of the i7 without making notice that the dell laptop probably has a video card about 5 times more powerful than the mb air. so you are making a dumb statement comparing them, its like comparing a bycle with the noise of a ram truck.
@drewpark1 $600 + for a quiet fan, no thanks, XPS 15 is just better at everything else, not to mention the price diference, mac's are so overpriced, and the fan isn't even that loud
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you think thats loud...... come borrow my hp pavilion 6810eg and then you'll have something to complain about, i mean shit, you have a quad core laptop, what'd you expect?

@gggman15 That's funny. I guess my Alienware M18x isn't "high performance" enough for you. Even my Macbook Pro performs better than this laptop. When you are manufacturing any mass produced laptop, the experience and quality has to consistent. Yes, there are going to be some laptops that will have some issues. Many XPS 15 owners are having quality issues such as this.
You have one of the quad core CPUs. Intel didn't update them to 32nm for some reason so they will produce more heat and they have 2 more cores than dual cores so they make more heat. I have also heard of the xps 15 having a loud fan so ignore it unless it ramps up beyond your 'normal' noise level.
Undervolt it (Google on how to do it) and it will run cooler, so the fan won't run so high.
UNDERVOLTING DOES NOT MEAN UNDERCLOCKING. Your laptop will not slow down or perform and slower by undervolting.

Probably the thermistors are a bit faulty not giving the selected resistance at given temperature.
And this results as the fan spins when it doesn't need to.
