He's doing a good job of it, but playing both guitar and cello I'd rather avoid what he's doing. Fretless bass would be better for that. It's completely possible and fun to fingerstyle an upright cello, and you don't give up being able to reach for the bow and mix that in, while the guitar position does screw that up. It's too much of a compromise! However, at the end of the day, that's completely subjective, he's sounding good, and it looks like fun.

This is amazing. I stopped playing cello when I grew out of my old one and now I wanna save up so I can get a new one lol. I imagine their wildly expensive though. I can't remember how much my ol one was cause I was like 8 or something and we rented to own so it was like 30 buck a month for a few years or something like that.

I've been looking at all these great vids of people doing new and crazy things with cellos, and on every vid the comments are full of this bickering between classical snobs who are offended by change and well... everyone else. Well, you probably know this, but not all people who play classical are snobs, it just so happens that that guy (celloluver101) happened to like classical AND was a snob. i think a better way to phrase that is "that is not the classical way to play the cello" but one plays the cello in any way to get his or her desired sound most efficiently. i'm sure when "col legno" was introduced people said "that's not how you play the cello" but here we are today with people playing their celli with the wood of the bow. btw i'm a cellist too

Hmm..well as long as its tuned like an electric bass you can pretty much do the same stuff...but being that this thing is like three times bigger than a hardbody bass....its a pretty cool performance...id like to see a drummer with some jazz brushes next to him too!

Doesn't need to be tuned the same as a bass, as long as you know where you need to go with your fingers. chords are just different to play because it's tuned in 5ths instead of 4ths.

It might really be an electric cello, though - they do make electric ones that look just like standard instruments, but they sound different. I'm not an expert or anything, but it does sound more like an electric instrument than an amplified one to me, especially when he's strumming it like a guitar. Very different quality of sound.

they just add a pick up to the bridge of the instrument and voila a electric cello, viola, violin. works as a acoustic and a electric instrument

Oh, I know how it works :) It's just that an amplified acoustic instrument sounds very different from an electric instrument, and I thought this might have been an electric one. Could be wrong though.
