I love Patty's work and especially this song! Her songs show her deep country roots and beliefs. Proud to call her local now that she lives here in Cartersville. This song though a different version is featured on the show Justified on FX now, which I also love!
I just found this song stuck in my Bluegrass fake book on the very last page. Song credit is Darrelll Scott. Book is in alphabetical order, but on page 430 there it was.
This is as fine a version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" as has ever been recorded. But let's also give credit to the brilliant songwriter, Darrell Scott, who also brings the song to life every time he performs it...
That's what it sounds like sung from the heart...It comes from deep inside that comes across as she sings it and pulls you into it with her. I live in Ky., but not in coal country. However, I think this song has a special place to every native Kentucky son or daughter. Plus, Patty kills it!
God, this song gives me chills every time. It may well be something that you don't really get unless you have some connection to coal country, but damn does it hit home. And no one can touch it like Patty Loveless can, IMHO.
I am from eastern Kentucky ( Knott co.) pretty close to Harlen. I am a coal miner and not a big country fan but this song gives me chills every time i hear it. this song really hits home... hill billie and proud of it!!!
This has in a way become her signature song. Anybody that sung it before sorry but it no longer belongs to you and anybody that sings it after well good luck trying to sing it better than this woman here did. She is a treasure, a true testament to what singers in any genre should strive for. Patty Loveless is a legend.
I can watch this one over and over. Patty Loveless is wonderful + her band is great! This version from Austin City Limits is full length the way Patty wants it to be.
