Yeah Prog was already alive by 1970. King Crimson's first album came out in 1969, which is just as complex as anything to come after it. Proto-Prog would be The Doors, Spirit or numerous other "acid-rock" bands who came before. It's A Beautiful Day is another good example. The band United States Of America already had proggy songs in 1968 along with Giles,Giles & Fripp & The Moody Blues.

A good example of pure proto-prog would be the song Bombay Calling by It's A Beautiful Day from 1969.

How is this proto-prog if KC, Genesis, VdGG, Yes were already out and GG, ELP came out this same year.
I'm just saying, it seems to be prog to a large degree, but "proto prog" would have to come before, such as Procul Harum, The Moody Blues etc...
Pretty cool stuff btw.
