He did it as a joke because it had vocals at first, but they told him to make it instrumental, so he sped it up to parody fast guitar instrumental songs.
yeah this was the first time paul dissapointed me, why did you sped up the acoustic parts? Altough is really fast, I think he was and is capable of playing that insane acoustic licks, why, why paul? It was like being slapped in the face...
this isn't speed up, he just says that so we don't flip out because no human can play that fast and paul simply isn't human in fact if anything its slowed down
@acdcislaw I was gonna write out this really big paragraph explaining that this song is infact sped up and he says so in an interview, untill I completely read your comment. But now that I have read it I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY
Paul said that when he wrote this he was parodying guitar instrumentals in general because they tended to be a pretty serious affair... hence the funny acoustic licks and the random revolution no.9 section in the middle. you can hear the whalesong...
He played it with a pick, he said he was trying to play as fast as he possibly could because he was trying to make a parody of an instrumental song (the song had singing on it, but the guys who made the album refused to take it since it was supposed to be an instrumental).
If you're wondering how do I know that - he said it on one of his clinics.
I'd guess drill pick...the only thing I know for sure(or read in a magazine, years ago) is that the weird voices are sped up pieces of audio from his answering machine. Thanks for listenin'!
I think the idea was to speed up & slow down parts for fun (if I understand completely) - the acoustic runs are just sped up (probably only slightly knowing PG) judging from the way the final notes of each run seem to be articulated a bit. Still my fav PG rarity though - thanks for posting!
@crashiooi no drill picking and he didn't speed it up, I'm almost 100% positive because I used to be able to play the acoustic fast parts just as fast so I'm pretty sure he didn't speed it up until the very last part when you can tell he did with those insane arpeggios. I think it sounds faster and impossible because of the tempo of the song and then that kicks in and catches you off guard. This is one of the best songs ever!!!
@crashiooi no drill picking and he didn't speed it up, I'm 99% sure because I used to be able to play the acoustic fast parts just as fast so I'm pretty sure he didn't speed it up until the very last part when you can tell he did with those insane arpeggios. I think it sounds faster and impossible because of the tempo and style of the song and then that kicks in and catches you off guard. This is one of the best songs ever!!!
@8triagrammer The ultra fast acoustic is a hilarious story. He got mad at the producers of the CD because of some legal garbage about singing and instrumental records. So he put the recording tape as slow as possible, played as fast as he could...then re-recorded the track in fast forward...that making the song "infinitely" fast. I heard that from PG himself. Apparently theres a fast electric guitar at the end that is not sped up...but is still wildly fast
@8triagrammer He did speed it up, but he did it to get back at the ppl that wanted him to record the song. It originally had vocals on it, and they rejected it because they wanted a purely instrumental album. So he intentionally sped those parts up to "poke fun" at the fact that they wanted purely fast, instrumental guitar.
He talks about it in a video from a clinic in '95 in NY. Look it up, it's on youtube now.
Most epic acoustic guitar playing I've ever heard.

I don't care if it's sped up or not, it's a nifty song!
Also, stop bitching with "HURR my favourite guitarist could play it faster" - the fact is, they haven't

I bet Shawn Lane could have actually played all of this up to speed. Love this song though as well as Paul Gilbert.

Actually, he sped up those acoustic rifs...that's okay, though. He's still a phenomenal musician.
Check out the Paul Gilbert: I Understand Completely, NY clinic, '95 video. He explains. He was feeling cynical that day.

I used to have the tape that this is from , it was called - Guitars That Rule The World.
This was the best and most inspiring track for me by a long stretch. And he had some serious competition.
All recorded and produced in his home studio was the clincher for me!!
I love the ac/gat no matter how he did it - it`s GOLD!!

It's sped up picking. It's an acoustic guitar, you'd here the drill if he was using that.
I love Paul's sense of humor...there's just something about this song that makes you want to laugh.
