  • This looks alot more like sumi otoshi (corner drop) than uki otoshi. Uki otoshi is generally done by dropping down to one knee and then pulling/flipping the opponent over.

  • @LukeQuietus Uki otoshi IS a technique similar to sumi otoshi. You can do it in a more formal modality dropping down a knee such as in the nage no kata, but usually it is practised in a standing position. You can see a good description in "Kodokan Judo - Throwing Techniques" written by Toshiro Daigo 10° dan.

    Francesco Zaccheo

  • @zaccheofrancesco True, I think the difference between the two is only that sumi otoshi breaks uke's balance backwards and uki otoshi involves pulling uke off balance to the front. Other than tha I suppose the principles are identical. Easily confused. I still think sumi otoshi is cooler thought for some reason.

  • @LukeQuietus Uki Otoshi and Sumi Otoshi are almost the same, but the direction you throw uke differentiates it. This is Uki Otoshi. In the kata, the version of Uki Otoshi is one where you drop to your knee, as you describe, but the drop to the knee isn't what makes the throw
