Doug, thanks for emphasizing the it's played with swing rhythm cuz almost every guitarist posting themselves on youtube playing this are playing it straight.
This does not start on the up stroke as he says at 2:07. I hear just 3 notes not 4. The right hand should not stop the alternate picking motion as well. It will confuse the muscles. Keep the hand going to keeping the same pattern even if you are not hitting all the notes. Watch Eddie you will see what I mean.
+1000. Rockin Doug! How is it being a red blood down under? Seriously though, what is the fretboard radius on that fine VH1 guitar? How 'bout your Star guitar? What's your favorite radius? It cracks me up when you have to play "those fucking stupid country licks"!!! Keep Rockin Man! I watch all your vids. Cheers.
@MrDDBone You never know the perception of the US until you live somewhere else. 'm better at spotting bullshit now, I'll tell you that much. No idea about any of the radius on an y guitar, I just play the fuckers. Star's is flat as a tack, wizard neck and all. Thanks for watching the clips!!!
lol emmi think the hardest iv played was Morning after dead is like amazing rifts and u have to like have a certain skill to obtain this songs power its like dragonforces kids sons daughters nefews Soul in this song
@KennyLBiersack This song? All of it, one pass. VH in general? Each song has it's mad little bitch waiting to punch you in the balls, but I'll say (right now) the hardest to get right is probably Whiskey 2nd solo. The bends are immense, the stretches hurt, and the timing is un-fun. Lol.
Dude your very right about the way the rythm goes it is a swingy kinda feel to it al most like zz top kinda feel alot of ppl just play it straight and it sound decent but not like the album great video and nice guitar shred on
Hey man what's up? I got a new version of this posted on my channel. Getting that swing feel at the beginning is tough to do fast without the drums behind me... oh well, most people screw it up much worse. The new vid has better quality than before though - both audio and video. At one point I superimpose my body onto the stage in front of a real VH crowd back in the 80s going wild LOL. Rock on!
The upstroke to start the riff and the accented upstrokes throughout in conjunction with the swing feel are critical to making it sound like Eddie. Otherwise you're just treading water.
ya the 1.5 Dunlops Ive used for over ten years now BUT Ive recently ( last 3 years now lol ) been using the 2.0 Purple sick puppy. After I went back to the 1.5 and its sooo easy to use the 1.5's that I said nah....back to the 2.0's. Let me know if you dig em. KIller clip bro.
Good work..now that i heard the isolated tracks floating around, some of the shit's slightly off, but I'll fix that later. Nail the main riff and all will be pleased, ha ha, metal!!!!!
you only one that got the riff right that i see so far. and up stroke is the preferd attack over any execpt rare cases..use alternating with this riff..start up down then when you get the first fill its up...when the main tune begins it will be a down feel
Howdy Doug, I redid my I'm The One vid (my old channel got deleted thanks to the wonderful people at Warner Music LOL). I think it turned out better than the last one (this one is with a backing track). Rock on!
right on Doug! finally somebody that actually understands the proper groove/feel for the opening riff.. Good job.. I was starting to think I was the only guy who got it.. LOL
Ha ha hhahha! Ed Roman.....dude the pickup in this guitar cost someting like $35 and came from "Guitar Fetish" on ebay. They are known as a "GFS Fat PAF" and are made in asia....cheers
doug, gave u props on mine for working out the upstrokes. finally satisfied enuf to post an effort. hope posting a vid here is cool. gonna work out the 'crazy intro lick' soon. tank
no prob, doug..least ur getting lots of work! tough times. i'd glossed over that beginning open-string lick in my vid..so working on it and bringing up to speed. late gettin back into guitar, but really enjoying. ur vids have been fantastic to not just refresh, but 2 learn riffs i thought i played right in the 80's, but didn't. rock on! ur a trip talkin to the cam!
ha..no, i started lifting weights 28 years ago and it just happened! :-) i will..having a lot of fun after such a long time. i'm going to clobber, err cover those, too. you're a riot, and talented as hell!
doug, thanks for the feel and the use of the upstrokes. even AFTER watching your demo many, many times..i still found every single way possible to play this WRONG! it took a surprising amount of patience and work to finally go, 'ohhh, now i got it!' i've only posted a couple things and what i post still needs work, but i hadn't played in 18 years until this past spring. i'll post an effort at this, maybe my fave vh tune, when i can get thru all of it. thanks again for the lesson..made my day!
Dude, you are a fucking tank!!!! You do security at a strip joint?
Hey, I'll be doing Running with the Devil, Little Dreamer, some others off the first cd pretty soon..I have to start working on my shred lesson website. Keep in touch, Tank.

Hey Doug good lesson. Nice guitar too, custom painted? Really nice looking maple. Hey you know Jeff Loomis from Nevermore uses those picks and Paul Gilbert used to use 1.5 picks back in the day.
Doug, thanks for emphasizing the it's played with swing rhythm cuz almost every guitarist posting themselves on youtube playing this are playing it straight.
