  • Greatest performance of this song EVER...bar none.

  • Simply beautiful. Blast was a huge part of my marching band experience. Makes me miss my high school days. Can't wait to see them in Feb! I'm sure I'll let some tears fall during this song.

  • Wow cool man reminds me of almost like marching band back in highschool. cept on a stage. and with green thingys.

  • Many the gifts, many the people,

many the hearts that yearn to belong.

Let us be servants to one another,

    making your kingdom come.

Christ be our Light, Shine in our

    hearts, Shine through the darkness.

  • I love this group and this song

  • AAAAHHHH SO SO SO GOOD!!!!!!!

  • beautiful! :)

  • star of indiana <3

  • @xmrwaffles2 It would be SO cool if they came back!!!

  • @OpulentRedrum they are, unfortunately its a japanese tour

  • @RegalStar12 Actually this is from the original broadway show in London England from the 90's or early 2000's and they are currently touring the USA, I'm seeing them tomorrow night in Detroit! :D

  • @puclik ok, NO the only relation they have to London is that, they Premiered their first show at the London Apollo theater in Hammersmith, London. they formed out of the disbanded drum corps, "Star of Indiana" here in the US, they are an American performing group, that tours the world. the point is, they are from the US, not London.

  • I have so many wonderful memories of actually getting the opportunity to learn from many of the talented people on that stage. If it has touched one life maybe that is all that God intended... I know I have and still "Pay my [teachings] forward" in my own life...

  • i would like to meet the 19 ppl that disliked this and smack them upside the head. This is one of the best shows ever, i can say im proud to have seen this live.

  • Whenever I hear this I think of SCV '09, then I think of Star of Indiana, what if they did a mega show of Ballet for Martha :D

  • Go 93 Star! I mean , Blast! Go Blast!

  • gave me chills :)

  • 19 people are far too complex.

  • @laughingstock133 If you think 19 is too complex, go check some of the corps who have used this piece on the field. Try 128 members moving and playing this intensely.

  • @laughingstock133 If you think 19 is too complex, go check some of the corps who have used this piece on the field. Try 128 members moving and playing this intensely.

  • @drbcrb I was being punny. Simple gifts is the name of the song. And 19 people didn't like it. The opposite of simple is complex. So obviously the people who didn't like it found it far too complex. It's not funny if I have to explain it. geez.

  • @laughingstock133 I understood what you meant :) you weren't misunderstood by EVERYONE.

  • @Sarahsbloggity thank you :)

  • @laughingstock133 no, thye're just stupid.

  • i saw this video at my school we all sang a long!!!

  • These are the greatest men who've ever lived.

  • this melody was a shaker hymn. there are only 3 practicing shakers still around, but this song will outlive them i think.

  • beautiful horns (: i want the a euphonim and a flugel for sure

  • You have got yo love their sychronicity

  • who on earth would dislike this vid?

  • @TWBaltz: they keep time by themselves. I got to see them live in Cincinnati OH when i was in high school and there is no director. it's amazing

  • I love Blast but I've wondered for a while now how they keep time? Is there a director behind the audience or are they keeping time by themselves?

  • @TWBaltz there is a conductor up on the balcony. I saw it live here in western ny. Plus i have the dvd and it shows him conducting.

  • @schantzman87 speaking from marching band experience, it's a bit of both. Yes, BLAST (like all MBs) has a director of sorts, but the problem with stage is the lights make him/her difficult to see, so they have to also be able to keep time themselves. It's the same for field shows, you can't always see the Major, so you have to be able to keep your own time at points and use the others on stage with you to help keep time also.

  • @LadyTalons Agreed.

  • Wow, amazing, love this, such a timeless song and now timeless performances from these artists...so wonderfully put together. THANK YOU so much for this share. A treasure in my playlist!

  • This was originally titled Orchestra Without Chairs and Conductor. In 1968 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that striking Union Musicians could not be forced to sit in pits, That little known ruling created the opportunity for an art form never before possible. My brother was a budding law clerk back then. He passed out the final printed landmark to Court judges. He brought a copy home to mother and it changed my life in a single hour. I suggest you study it. It would change yours.

  • Ever since I saw Blast live nothing ever compares to it. It's truly an amazing show and well worth watching!

  • @bamasoxtrumpeter93 They switch out depending on the song. Perfect example would be Split Complementaries. Look it up it's pretty awesome!

  • What beautiful music. I'm crying like big baby.

  • Beautiful!

  • Wow this is amazing

    :)

  • i like it but sounds kinda like Lord of the dance from micheal flatly

  • @MrBarriton

Lord of the Dance is based on Simple Gifts.

  • @skb2010 you are correct sir. simple gifts was written a good 200 years before lord of the dance.

  • Still think this is quite good...

  • what kind and what type of tubas do they use

  • @terrellrell715 they play on Yamahas i believe

  • @didujustfart89 im guessing Bb

  • @terrellrell715 I believe the ones that come out at 3:55 are Yamaha Eb tubas. And the contras are the same Yamahas that pretty much all the corps use.

  • i have watched this over and over and i love it but does anybody know why they do the colorguard bell thing in the begening?

  • @bobo62191 - The bells are playing the melody, mind you much slower.

  • @Trobs2384 that makes scene now thanks

  • i think someone in this videos name is mr. freed

  • Wow! You have to love this. :)

  • Love this song watch this video in Music class

  • I've said it before and I will say it again.

This video: 188,994 views as of 9/16/10

Fat kid on a rollercoaster: 4,726,116 views as of 9/16/10.

You tell ME what's wrong with this world.

  • @GormSim

People have been indoctrinated to believe that this is not entertaining.

  • @GormSim Wow, good point. It's really depressing when you think about it : /

  • I don't know if I should like it or dislike. It is very....flamy...

  • I am in a brass ensemble that is playing this same arrangement. :) Very cool.

  • i wish this would come on the radio instead of lil wanye and the rest of that BS

  • I get chills every time I watch this video and see that company front!

  • LOVING THE AMAZING EUPHONIUM TRIO!!!!!!!!!!! JUST ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS GUYS!

  • I remember seeing this live and around 5:30 to 6:10 that part was so cool because you just got blasted with a wall of sound it was physical, knocked you back into your seat... talk about powerful!

  • Wonderful, it is juz a very simple song, "Simple Gift" and the can make it so unique.

  • I love this song...i learned how to play it on baritone and its my warm up before drum corp practice.........not to mention my high school did it in their marching band show a few years back, search Auburn Maroon Vanguard 2003 Carrier Dome, the first few minutes are boring but then it goes to the actual show.

  • 5:47 to 5:53 gives me chills EVERY time I watch this video and I've watched it TONS of times!!! Definitely my FAVORITE BLAST piece of all time!!! What a wonderful show!!!!!

  • 3:45-4:12 Gives me chills every time. Amazing performance.

  • its so great to see what these musicians can do,great job guys!

  • this=SCV '09=awesome

  • omg... i love blast:) i watch the video all the time... and my guard instructor actually got to go to it. Im jealous!!! We're doing appalachian spring for one of our songs in marching band :)

  • There's just something about a company front that's so powerful! Awesome performance!

  • I thought this song was written for the Obama cerm.

  • @YOUPSYCHO This is a traditional Shaker tune. Appalachian Spring is Aaron Copeland's famous arrangement of it. I believe it was John Williams who arranged the arrangment which was performed (well actually recorded) for Obama's inauguration ceremony.

  • @YOUPSYCHO lol.

  • I saw this in concert when it premiered in 2000 at Indiana University Bloomington. The room was completely quiet and their singing brought chills...beautiful moment. I will never forget.

  • Simple Gifts was not written recently. It is a very old hymn by Elder Jospeh Brackett of the Shakers circa 1848.

  • God Damn that Was Cool.

  • does a couple trumpets sound sharp to anyone?

  • Perfection! Absolutely Glorious!! I am thrilled by this performance! Check out the triumphant majesty of this piece at 5:30! This is true Americana ... the musical equivalent of Old Glory, the Liberty Bell, and Mount Rushmore!

  • @buddmar

the cadets did this as a warm up and they were better..

  • well you do have to audition for a role to get into BLAST...i am waiting for that position

  • @531kinga How old do you have to be to audition to be in Blast?

  • @mbmaccin555555 well i am guessing around 21 and older. This is because BLAST really likes age-outs from DCI corps

  • A band that can SING that well balanced and in tune is AMAZING !

  • @saxplayr1 If you can play a musical instrument well with a good ear, it isn't that hard to learn how to sing well. You're merely using a different instrument (your vocal chords and mouth).

  • I know that, but how many people are there really out there that have perfect pitch/good ears

  • Not many people have PERFECT pitch (I haven't met any yet), but you'd be surprised how easy it is to train your ears. To my understanding, relative pitch is very common among musicians, including high school band students.

  • So awesome. :)

  • so?

  • Spine tingling, but does anyone think "Dexter" in some way? Seriously.

  • Chill's every time!

    <333

  • the best (wind) ensembles are the that can sing together like this.

  • I remember when I saw them in Memphis...damn I miss marching and going to see DCI contests.

  • If you're lucky there might be a Senior Corps close by. DCA

  • what an amazing group of musicians!

  • I think it would have been cooler had they been in-step when they came out

  • That woiuld be so fun to play, in that arrangement!

  • the most amazing thing ever!!!

  • wow this is revolution dbc's theme song

  • corps song. not theme song. i loved singing that when i was there in 05 and 06. those were the days

  • is there a conductor/drum major?

  • Yup.

  • nope

  • The D.M. is Underneath the balcony he alsi has a camera facing him as well for the pit percussion because each square has a tv monitor so they can see him as well.

  • @Moog167

I saw them live and I don't remember seeing a drum major...

  • Well I saw the conductor under the balcony when they performed at the lyric operahouse in Baltimore and I also remeber in the special features of the Blast DVD they talked about the conductor or D.M under a balcony.

  • its even more impressive live

    front row!

  • that beautiful fluglehorn solo..... uhhhh! so jealous!!

  • everytime i watch this video im like wow they did an awesome job on this video and this is one of my favorite songs

  • I think that was the first video on youtube that made me cry

  • split complementaries was the first video that made me cry. lol.

  • hmm.... I'll check that out

  • Would anyone insault me if I said that I cried in the ending. Beautiful.

  • no, i always cry

  • I love this one! its my favorite! i am slightly bummed it cut off the part where they are like "green is growing" with the blades of grass rifle things!

  • Definitely my favorite segment from Blast! It just became much more powerful after I listened to the real Appalachian Spring, then watched SCVanguard perform it for their 2009 show.

  • dude i agree! i was at indy for finals and it was amazing!!!

  • This is one of my favorite parts from Blast!

in fact this is how I learned about Aaron Copland when I saw them live.....

  • I really would like t his in sign language can you help?

  • I've met the flugelhorn soloist.

  • Would make a great MP3 to listen to.

  • i have the mp3

  • copeland is an american jewel. I played another 'adaptation' of the Shaker melody... I believe the Blue Knights played it a few years back, "Chorale and Shaker Dance".. Another favorite of mine was performed by the then Garfield Cadets in 88... Copelands 3rd symphony which he composed based on his OWN "fanfare for the common man".. find a recording.. stunning piece. Love Blast.. love it!!!!!!!

  • euph feature = low brassgasm

  • YES!

    OMG YES

    ...yeah, I'm spent..

  • Vanguard 09 anyone? :D their show was amazing btw!!!

  • agreed, it was amazing

  • YES!

  • i agree!!!

  • Or Cadets 87?

  • we learned how to play this song in band...omg i loved it

  • Saw Blast! live a few years ago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago. Fantastic! If you ever have a chance to see a performance in person...GO!

  • No matter how many times I've listened to this song I still get goosebumps when the entire corps plays after the timpini lead in

  • me too! it is amazing. I love blast! as good as they are here, they are better in person!

  • This was great! Thanks for sharing.

  • I love this! The whole show was awesome!

  • In school we sang this for our concert, we used this video (which is amazing by the way) to help us =)

  • i can play this on violin

  • Ya I play Trumpet and its really fun to play.

I had to miss the concert though. :(...

  • That was too beautiful

I hope we sing and play it just as well as you did

    so beautiful I cried...

  • That was really something. I am also playing a song called Shaker Variants at my school for band. That was cool !! :D

  • Same

We're SINGING and PLAYING this in our marching show...

Just like how you guys are singing it :)

  • Gorgeous, Simply Gorgeous

  • My corps song

  • at my school in band we are playing this song it is so pretty

  • that was absolutely stunning! a magnificent performance!! :D

  • Blast! on video is amazing on film simply because of what angles the cameras can get, but I saw them live on stage twice and it is worth the experience

  • Now That's Fuckin Cool.

  • simply beautiful. I got goosebumps at the end. I love simple gifts!

  • This is our corps song and i love hearing it.

  • MR LINKOUS!!!!!!

  • i love this song i can sing every word to it

  • OMG this is so beautiful! Did anyone happen to see the part with the percussion, that was so coool and intense lol!

  • I learn this song at school

  • Wow that's so pretty I love it! We're playing this song in concert band and wow! It's so pretty when played right.

  • There's no the, it's just called Blast.

  • Breathtaking. I've seen this entire show countless times and this piece along with "Lost" still brings a lump to my throat!

  • This is my all time favorite song and BLAST does a great job playing it. The flugel/trumpet soloist (the bald guy) does a great job. Just amazing.

  • His name is Ben. He's a pretty fantastic guy :)

  • WOW!! thats all i can say to this is wow, its amazing, awesome job, what drum corp did this?? where was this show held??

  • This is the Broadway show, "Blast"!

However, this video was made before the show went to Broadway. This video is from the London production.

  • Appalachian Spring was very much a Santa Clara Vanguard thing before Blast! came around. Even their show this year is Ballet for Martha which eventually evolved in to Appalachian Spring. ^_^

  • I could be mistaken, but I've always thought the Cadets were known for playing Appalachian Spring. (Cadets 1987)

  • Yes, but Santa Clara was the first.

  • Drum corps has been around for a long time, and Appalachian Spring was originally a Shaker melody which Copland took and turned into his magnum opus (in my opinion). There's no way of knowing who played this melody first.
