Best countertenor I have ever heard, high notes but still sounds more masculine then any I've ever heard he has truely been gifted with a most beautiful gift.
For me personally, there is no more beautiful voice than the countertenor : ) Followed only by the boy soprano ... And third? Probably the tenor ... thinking of Baroque tenor singing style (such as authentic renditions of "Ev'ry Valley" and so forth). Male high voices are sublime : ) I feel an aspiration arising ... if possible, in some existence, I would love to be a countertenor like Andreas Scholl or a Baroque Dancer like Kaspar Mainz.
@charmedandnightwishl ur in the same situation as me. I have a voice that would be more or less equal to a mezzo soprano. I like to call myself simply a countertenor :)
@charmedandnightwishl, I think you can call yourself whatever makes sense and not let someone tell you "that's wrong" when in reality these terms have broad uses. Several terms apply to your voice such as "counter tenor" and "male soprano", counter tenor being the more popular and broader term. Maybe you don't want to call yourself a counter tenor because you sing those notes in your real voice not falsetto, but many other counter tenors also sing in modal voice.
@charmedandnightwishl ... 'Hitting' very high notes is not the same as having them in your general tessitura... If you can sing them powerfully and beautifully, softly or loudly, and hold them for several seconds without screaming, then you're a 'mezzo soprano' or 'soprano'. Otherwise you're just an (over) ambitious countertenor... The notes to 'worry' about are the middle to low ones...
On the other hand, Andreas Scholl is God-like. Can't get over how beautiful his voice is. Sadly, this video's awful sound quality and Roger Norrington's silly hair means there's no point in this video even being up.
@signingupiseasyd Thanks. I've since been conducted by Sir Roger and I have to say he did a pretty good job. Still not a fan of his though. Conducting style is a little odd - difficult to follow at times, his no vibrato policy is still irritating though works in some contexts and is a good exercise as a violinist anyway, but he's still bloody weird and arrogant.
He dances around when he's rehearsing orchestras, thinking it's a really funny joke. He stamps his foot, also as a joke, so the musicians end up not being able to hear what they're playing, his "no vibrato" policy is bollocks, he shows off to the audience when he's conducting, as if what he's doing is really challenging when actually no professional orchestra needs a conductor to make them play together. He's an arrogant arse and the critics made a note of it after his prom concert last year.
Well I can't argue with the rest of that, but I stand up for clean tone and vibrato as a decorative ornament with works prior to the metal-string changeover in the 1930s...
In his defence it is really hard being a counter tenor, (i speak from experience) your voice is very fragile for some reason and the slightest problem can affect your voice greatly, even more than sopranos. However making a habit of canceling concerts is not good either and is greatly unfair to fans.....
To my knowlegde, a Countertenor is a Tenor who can sing in the female vocal range. I'm a tenor who can hit a few Alto notes, and I can even get soprano with my falsetto, but my falsetto sounds Geddy Lee after he sucked on a balloon.
No, Haute-contre is the term used for a man who can sing the alto (or even soprano) range with his modal voice. Countertenor refers to male altos and sopranos who employ falsetto, which is why our voices are not so robust. At best they are "half strength" compared to a trained modal-voice singer, although countertenors like Scholl have pushed themselves and trained hard enough to take on castrati roles convincingly.
Yes, but do you know why he cancels? Who knows what he's keeping private. Not to mention that a voice is something to be very careful with. How many people that are not even singers do you know that take a sick day from work. One day when we all find out WHY he cancels, you might feel bad about having called him "Naughty", Think about that.
Well, he IS a professional singer. A majority of audience members do not usually care about WHY he cancels, just that they came all the way out to see him and received no performance. There should be a level of consistency, because you are being paid big bucks to sing every night.
you do make a good point, and I much appreciate your decent reply, as opposed to Kalindoscopy's defensive and impolite reply of (at this time) seven months ago.
