Bunnet & Cramer are true jazz musicians as well as fabulous musicologists. However, they give themselves too much credit. Truth of it is that as far back as the 50's Mongo was already playing and recording Changui as part of his Afro-Cuban Jazz repertoire. Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco recorded Changui in the 60s & 70s and had a hit with "Rico Changui". Jazz is Afro-Cuban. It's no wonder that when asked by his biographer where Jazz came from Jelly Roll Morton tersely replied, "Cuba".
