@Si3z3 It costs a lot to haul 50,000 lbs of wings and tail and fuselage to space, both in mass and money. It costs about $10,000 USD per pound to get to orbit. As cool and awesome as the shuttle is, it's highly inefficient.

0 g is an issue of gravity. That's not a factor when in freefall (orbit). Plasma doesn't necessarily use air. Ion engines do use atoms in space, though(like hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe).

Can somebody explain to me why every orbiter since the apollo days has yielded almost no good images?

The recent LRO images of the apollo landing sites being the exception.

But where are the images from the Japanese? Clementine from the 90's, the Indian orbiter, the Chinese orbiter?

And now we are headed to October 2010 and almost no images from the LRO.

What is so important that the public, who paid for this can't get the uncompressed, *.raw images?

the apollo mission was equatorial studies....we where nor equipped with dv cameras and we jst discovered in 1999 that water images cames back.....

there was no nuke onboard. Had there been a nuke onboard, the explosion would have been visible to the nake eye, no way of hiding it. The fact that you assume that NASA has sent a nuclear payload to the moon and detonated it suggests to me that you are not as educated in nuclear physics in general or the effects or weaponized nuclear payloads in particular. Do you have any idea how bright a flash is from a nuclear explosion?

Well for a start, on earth we dig the ground to get water ( we don't propel expensive spacecraft to dig out water?)- Second some devious scientists are capable to nuke anything asteroid, humans (Hiroshima to wipe out civilians..) - Third, never trust what is said in the mainstream media as news content are filtered, hence Mars is coloured to appear red and no high definition photos of the moon surface..

If u Nuke a crater, no flashy light to entertain the viewer! haha
