I've been a fan of Runrig 4ever. This song always stirred my heart & it still does. The Macdonald brothers are some of the greatest songwriters anywhere!
runrig were my big game and strathclyde police pipe band to get back in to the big bagpipe scene i,am from ni ireland and i play with the great strathclyde police pipe band world champions 12 times i miss donny munro in runrig its not the same with out him,but he drove me on to were i am now so did my good lady susan,,, witch i love to bits so donny take care from sid northern ireland and pipe major don bradford and pipe sarge duncan nicolson!!!!!!!!!!xxoo
my mam was gaelic,as were my grandparents, and all her family,,i was taught to speak it when i was a wee lass,,sadly i am no longer living in the highlands,,but i try to get up at least twice a year,,my heart belongs here,,was born here and shall be buried here!!!
I love this song. It reminds me of being 10 years old, and my whole family used to listen to this album. I am actually Scottish as well, not like most Runrig fans.
@funkyspangles pretty sad really that runrig as a band are supported more across europe than in there homeland for watever reason, Iv supported them since i was a boy brought up in Kyle of lochalsh i still support them 2 this day with donnie and with bruce how many bands can say they are still going strong after nearly 40 years
Say, can anyone tell me - just what exactly are they saying there "...I suppose he's a bit like a [xxx] really cos he's caught between two cultures" - he's a bit like a what???? For the life of me I can't make it out...
When you arrived in Canada you walked the streets Out of work out of money, prospects bleak Now the plane comes down from the morning sky And you touch the land where the fire won't die Johnny, you're home, man It's a long road You drove us down It's only a moment Since the diesels turned Now the blade cuts clean through the island soil The years roll back and the world grows small You stand on the banks in the wind and the rain
Mmmm this makes me put it in perspective, Australia where I was born and live are into AC/DC, The Angels and in Scotland its Runrig. Sort of the Australian eqilevent of Runrig in Australia is Midnight oil.
Yes you could that. I actually think of them more as a Scottish band then Australian. Its because they formed in Sydeny Australia. Theres a lot of annoying nationalistic aditude here in Australia about AC/DC being our own. Aussie pride all the way so annoying
Quite simply the best song ever written, sung by the best singer in the best band in the world. The words are fantastic "so you hold your mother, you bless the air with the tears of the immigrant, tongue of the Gael, stunning!!!. I have been a runrig fan since about 14 (1985) and lost touch a bit with them when Donny left, but just have to have my fix of "the Cutter" every now and then, it's a song that will never leave me, nor do I want to ever forget.
Thats also my fav. moment when He sings these words. Donnie has such a pure, soaring and disarming voice at the same time. His voice goes straight to my heart.
Thanks for the comment, I bore people down here (down south now!!) about these lines, they just don't get it, however I do, and that's all that matters. The only other line that gets close for me is Bruce Springsteens "Streets of Philadelphia where he sings "ain't no angel going to greet you, it's just you and I my friend". In some strange way sometimes less is more in both this and the Runrig words, a few words, in both instances, tells a very big story. Thanks again
My dad has been a huge Runrig fan since I was born, so my ears were pumped full of it at high volume for a great number of years. It's great to see so many other people still listen to them, im only 22 but I know every single word. My dad's name is also Callum if that it yours.
For ollach: Don't beat yerself up, mate--you're enjoying them now, that's all that matters...30 years and still goin' strong, God bless them! I'm an American and have loved Celtic music since forever, but it was my daughter who brought Gaelic music into my life a year ago with Runrig and I've been smitten ever since.
I think I was at this gig - Barras Dec 88 or 89. It was recorded for a TV special. The previous year was recorded for the Once in a lifetime live album. Am I right?
You are spot on pal but the benefit bodys who are afraid that their benefits may be affected with a change of goverment are also a big drawback to our aspirations
One of many words, fantastic, brilliant, I just adore this band, wonderful, what a sense of enchantment and history they engender in the listener. I love listening to them, what a privilege. Jo Sparkes
I have just made a comment, but saw yours and just had to agree with you entirely, what a privilege to listen to such music that really touches the soul.

And all of your money now can't hide this pain
So you hold your mother and you bless the air
With the tears of the emigrant, tongue of the Gael
And the plane takes off in a clear blue sky
Life's a long lost list of last goodbyes
