Soooooooo true, my friend! I just sent this to my 2 daughters! Following your dreams is how we obtain our true successes in life. F*ck fear! Thank you so much for your wise words!
I know where you're coming from, Phil. I've felt the same way for a long time. Nobody to blame but myself for how I wound up. If it helps, you're a good man, irrespective of what you consider your achievements.
I just now came back and listened to this again. I hope you know just how good and how powerful this is. I think it rings such a bell with me since I'm 54 years old and didn't have sense enough, or courage enough to take chances. I love this video and I love you for making it.
man i wish that i would have heard this speech when i was graduating from high school...even though i have already did things he has described in the video
I wish I had heard this speech when I was young enough to take it to heart. I certainly know where it comes from, Phil. I've been there, and, sadly, done that.
I'm not sure I understood this whole thing. Did you graduate in 2008?
As far as being an Asstronaut who "lays bricks", I'm sure its never too late to do that in that particular culture. Otherwise lay off the class of 08. I'm sure they'll find a way to be cool while the world burns!
Decades ago, my dreams were bigger house, up in corp ladder, better qualif'ns... Relationships were supposedly dispensible & were there to assist my goal achieve'm.
Now, I get most I dreamed but my better half becomes a chronical patient. I really want to trade with all the trophies I earned for "Health".
I didn't even realize I have been the luckiest person these years and was chasing useless 'dreams' at expense of neglect my better half. My dream, now, requires a miracle to fulfil.
From another "fat Yank wanker" . . . you pitiful trolls lacking the intelligence or the wit to say something meaningful are the real losers. All you can do is snipe at a better man than you will ever become, you pathetic, mindless asshole! Go fuck yourself and drop off the planet!
Sorry. You're wrong. You're not a loser. Did you get to live all of your dreams? Perhaps not. But who does? And when they do, does the reality ever even approach the fantasy? The answer is no. If you're a kind, compassionate person, have a few true friends and accept other human beings for what they are, you're anything but a loser. Most of the rich, famous, successful people I've known are no happier than the rest of us. Happiness comes from within.
I accept your point, but I am not talking about rich, famous or successful, but the opposite. I am talking about pursuing what fulfills your life, not your bank account or ego. What brings you joy, not acclaim or money.
I understand that. I was just using it as an example of people who seem to be "successful", but aren't happy. I'm under the impression that you aspired to becoming a great actor, which is probably what brought fame and fortune to mind, since they usually go together. The larger point is that becoming an kind, compassionate human being is the highest form of success. Yes, I was digressing, but I thought it was a point worth making. :)
It is a point absolutely worth making. I don't know if it is always the case that the greatest actors get the money and fame, though. Acting/performing is a part of what I want, but it is hard to articulate simply, other than to say I want to discover things that matter and communicate them to other people. That communication can be acting, directing, writing (drama, fiction, nonfiction) science, opinion, etc. It is a broad scope, but I was always a pig :)
I think you should start writing something today, like maybe a play that you can direct and act in. You can debut it on YouTube and then take it to Broadway. Don't give up. :)
wow. something we all need to think about. thanks for sharing, but i think anyone who's seen your videos would argue that you definately stand out. : )
Cheer up! Some things may appear as a waste of time, but even those moments are small links to a better day. I have sat out on the porch all night just to watch it rain and enjoyed every second of it. I love the rain. Maybe I am here just for the rain?
Envy is a strange emotion, I am not sure if you can consciously choose to deny it. I envy your security because I struggle so hard to make ends meet, to pay for some form of health care... To me it is all perspective- a mile in someone else's shoes we all make do, infinitely hoping, be well!
You make a good point. But we never really get to walk in someone else's shoes. We can only try to make our shoes comfortable - and have respect and compassion for others. Envy can motivate, but it can also destroy.
I regret a few of the things I've done but not nearly as many as those that I didn't do. Powerful, Phil. Those of us who've gotten to know you over the past couple of years know that in your YT life, you've found a way to tap into the things you don't get to do daily. That's important, for sure.
It is important, Tom. YouTube is a creative outlet that has awakened something that was dormant for a couple of decades. Just on this page right now I see comments from several people I know and respect. The exchange of ideas and creativity is very important to me.
im lucky enough to live all three of my dreams. seeing the world, being a dad twice, and owning my own tavern. but we are not defined for how we make a living, but how we live our lives. i think theworld of you...regardless of how much you hate your job.
Thanks Tim. You and others on YouTube have revived a hope in me that maybe I can contribute something that matters to me. I hope to have a beer or two at your tavern some day. You're lucky being a dad. That just expands your dreams so they keep on going.
Great video. I'm working on not losing anymore. Fear of poverty is a powerful motivator, though. I know security is an illusion... thus, I'm working on convincing myself that poverty and creative productivity is better than comfortable salary and meaningless existence.
Bravo for the admittance. I have had to face the fact that I have accepted past defeats and look like a really big loser to many of peers.
Well said, Phil. Don't you wish that someone had stood before us at the critical juncture in our life and had spoken just those same words? Inspired us to follow our dreams and not be satisfied with getting by comfortably? Regret always has a little bittersweet undertone, in my opinion. Well, don't be hard on those of us who didn't have the nerve to break out -- we are part of a vast club, I guess -- let's look to the future and change what is ahead. It's not over yet.
Doctor Phil, i wanted to be a photographer, how can i do it? lol! Doctor Phil always helps, lol, kidding!
I feel like a loser nowadays but i still try to get out of it! I don't know if i made a comment 2 days ago (not going to search on this comment ocean) because i'm watching this for the second time, anyways, i still can blame my father, right? lol
I have a kid graduating in a couple of weeks and I plan to let her watch this video...you are repeating what I've been telling her for the last 2 years...I don't care what she does with her life as long as she is passionate about it. Each and every day needs to be worthwide and full of blessings that she helps be a part of. Life will pass by at the same rate for all of us, it's how you feel about each day's accomplishments that make the difference. BE HAPPY!
Boy, can I relate to you on this. I recently told my long lost sister not to be like me. Passion about what you do doesn't seem important when you're young but it hangs like a pall as you get older.
Fulfillment does not necessarily come from a career. Life outside of work can and ought to be given to fulfillment. i can make a difference in the world around me not by what i do for a living but what i do with my mind and my time and how i interact in the benefit of others. For years i hated what i did for a living but finally came to the understanding that it was necessary to support myself and what i did outside of work was really most important and find myself now gladly cruising thru.
I've always enjoyed learning from the experience of those who've had the time to reflect on their lives.
It's good that you've realized your situation; But talk is cheep and to accept the fate you've assigned to yourself is to continue your self denial. stop feeling sorry for yourself or complacent in you self imposed misery because, I have some good news for you;
YOU ARE NOT DEAD... yet; The past is dead and the future has not yet been born -- Go and chase your dreams with abandon!
I don't feel sorry for myself (most of the time) and I don't think I am in denial. I think my assessment of my position is clear eyed and accurate. Complacent? Somtimes. But I hear what you are saying. Thanks for the kick in the ass. I need it sometimes.
I was duped into believing that I couldn't do math. It was my fault for accepting it. So I learned a profession that was unfulfilling. Then, at 42, I went to college and got an A in every math class through mv calc. I don't resent the time I spent partying and going to clubs; I resent the time I spent learning my second choice profession. Some people long to go back to 18 if they can keep what they know. I long to go back to 33 and you can keep what I know. Just give me confidence this time.
Hello Fantastic. Not to be nitpicky here, but I am one of the ones who pointed out the scarydave video. I read your comment, and it was on 'don't let the bastards keep you down', but it was the song... Not the speech. Both are great, but the rant eclipses the song by far. He has two videos related to the theme. Just to make sure you don't miss out on the better one by far, here's video id.
"doing meaningless things for people who are too stupid to do it for themselves" Talk about job security! Yes, it's true one of my best attributes is that I never did what I was told. It's ironic that the success I've enjoyed directly relates to that. What the fuck is wrong with our parents? Holy shit.
My parents were products of the Depression, so they were very conservative and thought they were protecting me from disappointment. But, if you don't risk much, you're not likely to accomplish much.
I couldn't agree more though. One of my friends is an artist and he once got a job painting a mural for a hospital when he had negligible prior experience. He told me the exact same thing when I asked why he was aiming so high. Turns out he was right. Now he gets as many jobs as he'll every need; he actually needs to choose!
I worked for me too... It's never too late to join the club, Phil.
Oh, I have dreams. I just can't seem to figure out how to move from dream-state to passion-state. In these politically correct times people seem to confuse being positive and upbeat with never expressing moments of anxiety, apprehension, or a sense of loss. I guess I can't seem to identify my passion. Perhaps, I am deficient or simply doomed. Or, as the other poster mentioned, perhaps I have to keep looking. I always get a sense you find my words combative. And, that is not my intent... :-(
Thanks, that helps! I just wish someone could provide some instructions. Don't get me wrong... I'm not looking for detailed plans or a flight path. And, your warning gives some coordinates. But, coordinates are not enough for someone who is trying to find his way out of a lost zone. And, no one seems to understand that...
DITTO Phil. It's amazing that you were talking about ME as well. I think for the most part, we all somehow fit into this piegonhole in varying degrees. Should'a, Could'a, Would'a. Hindsight is 20/20 and all those cliches. I totally agree. Go for the gold ring. If you don't go for it, you'll never know what it is to hold the gold. Brilliant sir, as always and as astute as anyone could possibly be. NOW if the class of 2008 will only heed the advice. Perfect my friend.
Yes, life is not perfect, so... Would you advise people not to pursue their dreams because they should be afraid of failure or they may change their minds?
I am your garden variety loser as well. I make a living with good health insurance. I don't like my job either, but have kept it for 15 years so far due to insurance. I get fulfillment from my personal life. Oh by the way, I saw "Suddenly last summer" for the first time last night!
Commencement, I forgot that it is this time of the year...
Wise words. Took me many years to discover that I do not have to follow what others expect of me, but to pursue my dreams, and, at the same time avoid falling in regret and shame.
Took me sometime not to fear making mistakes and not to fear about the future.
May I ask something?
I would love to know what Bev Bly would say for this occasion (a commencement speech)... Besides, of course, "keep it pink, baby"
i went for my dreams 100% against the odds.i failed. spent years trying to keep positive until now disillusioned with positivity i face poverty old age and loneliness. so i lurk on youtube and hate. wish i'd gone for the money
It's never too late to re-invent yourself. You're not a loser. You just need to let go of the old dreams, decide what it is that you'd like to do most at this station in life, and go for it.
This is the part in every melodrama where the heroine slips her withering hand in the outstretched hand of the villian and walks off with him into the diminishing twilight. Do not go qentle, FantasticBabblings.
I liked this video a lot Mr Babblings. I've just finished my education and am thinking about what to do with the rest of my life so messages like this are very welcome. :)
Remember it's never too late to quit your boring job.
Actually it's not all that long before I can retire. I just need to prepare for that and try to improve my health so I can have a productive and happy retirement.
Phil, I wish I'd been given this commencement address upon graduation. I probably would have become a loser anyway, but i'd surely remember the speaker for the rest of my life.
Quote from a relevant song I adore called "You and I Are A Gang of Losers" by The Dears:
You should redefine your dreams to match your reality. That is so much easier. Also, what do you do when you achieve your dream and find it was hollow? The first step is to define the dream.
I'm going to YoTube but I need my vacation hours for another cruise. I'm booked for a special themed cruise that will feature 3 rock bands performing live on the ship plus other events.
Enjoyed watching. Sometimes it is good to be reminded that life is for living not just 'passing through' as were.
Dont forget though that the same goes for you...comfortable job/home/insurance is one thing...but remember to take the chances for doing the things you really want as well.
Oh and dont forget to take Mrs W Bush along for the ride too ;)
I don't think you're dumb. Work hard (and give away enough apples) and get your grades up. Do you have to be a citizen to be a cop? Or just have a work permit. Maybe you could become a citizen. Don't give up if that's what you really want. I believe in you, Java.
I just about cried. I have every reason 2 regret, and u know enough of me, and why. But I dont.
Some1 on a Madonna forum recently told me that I wasnt living in reality, to keep dreaming. Topic was basically about her being a greedy bitch to which most of her loon fans agreed while I didnt.
Told him that "I will keep dreaming, thanks very much" and that I'd give him the remaining seasons of The Facts of Life if he wanted. Prior, he started a petition topic 2 have TFOL released on dvd. Silence.
you know... you could always help me write the book I have always wanted to write about my experience as a young soldier in the Iran-Iraq war, then my following experiences traveling half way around the world just to come into this great Nation... And together we could bring an important message to the world about what happened to young kids like me in that world... while making a pretty penny at it enough to be comfortable and invest in some Real Estate while we can for the next two years :)
My dream is to be a lazy bum, where I can sleep as late as I want, eat whatever I want, go wherever I want, do whatever I want, all whenever I want, for all my days. But, damn it! I always wake up.
Well, I'm in the class of 2009 but I will take it to heart regardless. The message seemed a lot like thechurchofdave's Don't let the bastards keep you down though. Any inspiration there or just a coincidence?
I just saw thechurchofdave video whereof you speak. I loved it. I hadn't seen it before, but as I commented on his video, I claim ex post facto inspiration from it.
great vid phil , im in the same boat , i go to work and its the same thing everyday , nothing different nothing changes , i can do it all in my sleep , its like a habit instead of a job , of course i would love to be an actor , not a live show actor but a film actor, and me and my lazy ass will not find the motivation to get out there and do it , and rejection would kill me for sure lol. i feel ya phil !!

Holy shit.
mwest1234 3 years ago
My parents were products of the Depression, so they were very conservative and thought they were protecting me from disappointment. But, if you don't risk much, you're not likely to accomplish much.
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Hey Phil,
Sorry I'm a bit behind the curve your videos.
Excellent as always.
All the best,
Dustin

But, what if I can't seem to find out what my burning desire is...? And, what if I find out I don't have one? :-(
RiverMark 3 years ago
You keep living, learning, and it should come to you! Probably from the strangest of places and a complete surprise!
samsarajade 3 years ago
So true, Tia.
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Life is not perfect or fair. That's why I said *if* you have a dream or burning desire. If you don't... maybe you're luck.
In these politically correct times some probably think people shouldn't pursue their dreams because it might upset those who don't have them.
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Oh, I have dreams. I just can't seem to figure out how to move from dream-state to passion-state. In these politically correct times people seem to confuse being positive and upbeat with never expressing moments of anxiety, apprehension, or a sense of loss. I guess I can't seem to identify my passion. Perhaps, I am deficient or simply doomed. Or, as the other poster mentioned, perhaps I have to keep looking. I always get a sense you find my words combative. And, that is not my intent... :-(
RiverMark 3 years ago
Ultimately, of course, it is up to you. I can only hope you will find your passion, and I do.
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Thanks, that helps! I just wish someone could provide some instructions. Don't get me wrong... I'm not looking for detailed plans or a flight path. And, your warning gives some coordinates. But, coordinates are not enough for someone who is trying to find his way out of a lost zone. And, no one seems to understand that...
RiverMark 3 years ago

FantasticBabblings 3 years ago

I am your garden variety loser as well. I make a living with good health insurance. I don't like my job either, but have kept it for 15 years so far due to insurance. I get fulfillment from my personal life. Oh by the way, I saw "Suddenly last summer" for the first time last night!
Beachmama57 3 years ago
Great. Did you enjoy it? My bad health, a great deal of it my fault, shackles me to the health insurance too. Without it I would be dead.
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Commencement, I forgot that it is this time of the year...
Wise words. Took me many years to discover that I do not have to follow what others expect of me, but to pursue my dreams, and, at the same time avoid falling in regret and shame.
Took me sometime not to fear making mistakes and not to fear about the future.
May I ask something?
I would love to know what Bev Bly would say for this occasion (a commencement speech)... Besides, of course, "keep it pink, baby"

Bev is slathering an ancient widower with sunscreen at Boynton right now, but she will be back to YouTube. Maybe a little richer :)

Life isn't perfect. But is your advice that no one should go for their dreams because they might fail?
FantasticBabblings 3 years ago
Wow. That was a great video.
It's never too late to re-invent yourself. You're not a loser. You just need to let go of the old dreams, decide what it is that you'd like to do most at this station in life, and go for it.

You should redefine your dreams to match your reality. That is so much easier. Also, what do you do when you achieve your dream and find it was hollow? The first step is to define the dream.

FOLLOW THAT DREAM! One last bit of advice for you my dear, dear friend...

Silence.

Yeah, she's always been great. While George M. and Elton were cowaring in the closet, she was all lesbified. lol

you know... you could always help me write the book I have always wanted to write about my experience as a young soldier in the Iran-Iraq war, then my following experiences traveling half way around the world just to come into this great Nation... And together we could bring an important message to the world about what happened to young kids like me in that world... while making a pretty penny at it enough to be comfortable and invest in some Real Estate while we can for the next two years :)
