There is no such language as "American"? Well, there are certainly differences between "British" English and the American version. There is even a recognized "International" English which also differs in spelling and some punctuation conventions. When I taught English (and American Literature) in Romania, my Romanian colleagues preferred "British" conventions over "American" because they saw the Brits as having "developed" Modern English first.
