I remember when I first heard the Black Crowes. It was a time when there was an endless parade a roots rock bands, and I thought, here's just another flash in the pan band. Boy was I wrong. @wichrau Sorry, but i couldn't disagree more. His voice has matured over the years and now its awesome. To say his voice is now weak obviously shows you haven't heard the brothers of a feather- live at the roxy cd

Black Crowes one of the best of all time. Some of the best soulful blues, boogie and rock and roll ever. Get Down, Get Funky and Let The Freak Flag Fly !
That was Sid McGinnis (sp?) Pretty amazing considering half the band was Letterman's house band (Will Lee-Bass, Anton Fig-Drums and Paul Shaffer-Keys) and it sounded exactly like the record.
Good call, absolutely! In fact I was learning to play this song on the guitar and all the sudden it dawned on me how much it sounded like "Crazy Mama." It's not the exact same chord sequence, but Rich certainly does borrow a lot of Keith Richards (which is OK). Rock on!
I have this song loaded on my ipod mp3 radio on my motorcycle and I tell you it is one of the greatest songs to listen to while you're driving. It just makes you get into the ride!!
The guy in the white / checkered vest must have won some kinda contest where he got to play with them, lol. I've never seen anyone "less rock n roll" than this cheesepuff. He's trying like hell to fit in though, gotta give him that.
who would do research on an idiot like that? and fuckstick? lol, are u 12 yrs old?. do some research on how to make your dick bigger so u won't be so angry.
That looks like Will Lee on bass. He was part of lettermans house band back then. They do that some times, if a band comes on the show that they really, really like sometimes the house musicans will ask if they can play with them, just for the kicks. Most bands are good sports about it.
I'd never heard of The Black Crowes when I saw them open for Heart in 1989, and they blew me away. This reminds me of that show, thanks for posting it. Someone should mention Anton Fig playing the hell out of the drums- The Crowes rely on solid, soulful groove and Fig delivers the goods, as always, in a fill-in role. Same can be said for Will; both are just consummate pros. As good as the Crowes rhythm section is, they weren't terribly missed here...
Lettermans paino player Paul Schaffer is crackin me up in this video. But superdork in the white vest was well, kinda dorky lol but all in all its a cool video
Dec. 20, 2008. Chris, I just want to wish you a Happy Birthday today. I just want you to know that I saw you all in person in March 1990 when I was in the Navy. You all appeared at On Stage in Norfolk, VA. and opened up for Junkyard. I spoke to you after the show while you mingled with the fans there. Can you remember that far back? Again, Happy Birthday & may you have many more.
Furthermore, these guys came out when all black radio had to offer was rap, and we all had it shoved down our throats on MTV and everywhere we went until it poisoned the music industry. Again, the attitude that black artists got screwed in the past so therefore anything that came after is a ripoff is a joke. These guys aren't ripping off Jay-Z or Snoop, so get with the program. Every black artist in rock and roll is welcome and cherished. Update your info, soulcop83.
the "bad guy playing piano" is paul schaefer, one of the most respected musicians in the jazz/blues world today. he played with many of the greats, and even played with the blues brothers.
@xblacqx at least he said "one of the", I'm sure he didn';t mean to offend you by that statement, which I believe to be true from start to end. He was in both BLUES BROTHERS movies!!!
So while I'll agree that anybody can play or listen to any music I'll also say I never heard tell of any "R&R blues rock" muscian pay tribute or royolties to any of the artist they borrowed from.
You don't know shit about the Black Crowes, go look on "3 Snakes And A Charm" and "Warpaint" and see the love they give to black artists. They understand where it comes from and don't live much different than the blues men of old, including dealing with addiction and scorn from their peers, so take that attitude that you have to be black and from the old days to understand blues. Modern black radio has all but abandoned blues.
Okay first off can you steal a type of music no, music is there fore everyone of any color.
That being said can you steal a style of entertaiment while not acknowleding the roots of it and delibertly blacklisting the ORIGINAL artist? Well yeah that's what happened to ALL minority artist right on up to about the 1960's.
incrível. vendo esse vídeo percebo que esses caras estão virando verdadeiros dinossauros do rock'n roll. não vemos muitos dessa espécie vindos dos anos 90, mas de antes (50,60,70).
i dunno, looks like apart from chris, rich and jeff cease, they r using the late show house band dont it? never seen this 1 before. still sounds great tho
For some reason, in the early days of Letterman, bands had to use his rythm section. So drummers and bassists had to get high in the green room as their bands played.
garzaeduardo, eric clapton is no thief he's a genious. the blues were neither stolen nor borrowed, they were passed on. I doubt slowhand is concerned with you forgiving him. And why would you want him to start a fund for black children when you refer to past blues musicians as niggers.
The black crowes have always been an awesome REAL rock band to me. when i was in jr. high in the early 90's and everybody was obsessed with bands like nirvana and pearl jam, i had the crowes in my tape deck! Chris has a spectacular voice and this music really stands up over time too.
You can really see the Stones influence on them early on. Don't get me wrong, they were hot and all... later on they really cohered their own style, their own forms. More hippie than blues, I guess. Good stuff.
The "dork" in yellow shoes probably makes more cash in a hour than you make in a month! Too bad the whole band didn't appear but oh that's TV commercialism USA Network style, at it's best...
here's how it goes.English bands stole the blues from under uncle sam's nose, changed it, made it their own. The yanks ten steal it back without changing it and serve it up to the brits. This is derivative of the Stones and the Faces, it's good, but not groundbreaking, this is my fave Crow's song - shame they couldn't keep it up.
yeah, i don't entirely agree with that statement of stealing things...they borrowed, and for the most part, as any beatles fan will tell you, it was tough to get american records in britain when r&r was big in the u.s. so, the uk was always a little behind with catching on to u.s. trends.
the brits 'discovered' american blues when blues musicians fell out of fashion with u.s. audiences, and so went oversees to play.
eric and the gang put their spin on it, and the fresh approach hit in u.s.
bro, blues was never is fashion in the u.s,fucking nigger hating bastards let pat boone do the money making.they fucking stole every fucking chord...everybody thinks the rolling stones created the blues.niggers created the blues and rock and roll and white people ripped them off and made all the money.eric clapton is a fucking thief and has never paid back what he stole!!!when he creates a fund for black children i'll forgive him.
ok, first, try to lay off "nigger" for a sec. yes, blacks like robert johnson, howlin' wolf, john lee hooker, etc. created blues. however, psychadelic blues rock was developed primarily by white english artists like zeppelin, the yardbirds (page, beck and clapton), etc. you might cite hendrix to disprove me, but hendrix even didn't fall into his true element until he reached england in 1966.
psychadelic blues? what's that? It's by defenition music from the heart and soul.
And if you want to pin-point some inventer for the white english blues than start off with John Mayall, they all lined up begging for a place in the Bluesbreakers! Beck, Taylor, Clapton, Green etc. Also Alexis Corner was a great artist and blues innovator.
British blues has a great tradition due to all those legends.
brosef, blues was the daddy of it all...that's where it all started. having said that, the blues is the blues, r&r is r&r, and in music, it's all been done.
instead of worrying about who ripped off who 50 years ago, just listen to the music, and let it move you.
did you read my reply? that's how it went, bro. who thinks the rolling stones created the blues? elvis made money playing all kinds of music, not just blues. and clapton waited 60 years to 'steal' that music, so staute ran out.
Tune your guitar to open G. The main verse goes mainly between D and Aadd9 (or D6sus4), which is made by barring the 7th fret and making an Am7 shape with your 2nd & 3rd fingers. The fills are pretty easy to figure out from there.
thanks, I play keyboard, though, and got the chords from Chordie dot com. I play it with D through verses and D C D B G through first chorus and C G through second chorus.
personally, i think john lennon has the greatest voice, but then i listen to freddie mercury, or ozzy osbourne, or robert plant, or steve marriott, or elvis presley, or burton cummings, and the list goes on....
i remember when glenn close hosted and they did sometimes salvation and as yet to be released non-fiction. i was in a room full of straights, and none of them got it (filthy hippies!).
i don't know why, but i believe chuck leavell was on keys on this record. also, where is steve?
interesting anecdote...i saw the crowes, billed as'overdose jubilee', at the opera house in t.o. in '95. rumours had it that mick and keith were going to crash the show.
so, we all waited, encore, no mick or keith. but who does show up? chuck and ronnie.
after shake your money maker and a wicked statesboro blues we knew we saw something special.
Oh My!! I'm a big Crowes fan from Minnesota and was pleasantly surprised by this little nugget. Their network TV debut on Letterman no less....look at the album...that is so neat...they must not of had enough clout to get the full band in there but they sound good none the less...and they look like pups. I saw the Kare-11 station Id so whoever recorded this must be from Minnesota too....that takes me back...cool stuff. Thanks.

And if you want to pin-point some inventer for the white english blues than start off with John Mayall, they all lined up begging for a place in the Bluesbreakers! Beck, Taylor, Clapton, Green etc. Also Alexis Corner was a great artist and blues innovator.
British blues has a great tradition due to all those legends.

brosef, blues was the daddy of it all...that's where it all started. having said that, the blues is the blues, r&r is r&r, and in music, it's all been done.
instead of worrying about who ripped off who 50 years ago, just listen to the music, and let it move you.
did you read my reply? that's how it went, bro. who thinks the rolling stones created the blues? elvis made money playing all kinds of music, not just blues. and clapton waited 60 years to 'steal' that music, so staute ran out.

anyone know the chords to this song?
medavid1111 4 years ago
Tune your guitar to open G. The main verse goes mainly between D and Aadd9 (or D6sus4), which is made by barring the 7th fret and making an Am7 shape with your 2nd & 3rd fingers. The fills are pretty easy to figure out from there.

thanks, I play keyboard, though, and got the chords from Chordie dot com. I play it with D through verses and D C D B G through first chorus and C G through second chorus.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Why retune your guitar? This is straight ahead rock & roll - most of it can be done on two strings. There's no big secret to be learned here.

When they came back after commercial, Dave said to Paul, "That's rock-n-roll pretty much the way God intended it to be."

medavid1111 4 years ago
not even close? depends how you rank 'em i guess.
personally, i think john lennon has the greatest voice, but then i listen to freddie mercury, or ozzy osbourne, or robert plant, or steve marriott, or elvis presley, or burton cummings, and the list goes on....
not even close? its all subjective i guess.

Awesome... but where are Steve, Eddie and Johnny? And why do they have the Late Night guitar player too?
Anyway, the Crowes' are the most rock n' roll rock n' roll band in rock n' roll.

First time I saw them on TV was a bit later on SNL doing "She Talks to Angels". Mr. Robinson performed and danced the song of his life that night...

why wasn't the original bass player and keyboardist on that video?
pjeffersonrocks 4 years ago
i don't know why, but i believe chuck leavell was on keys on this record. also, where is steve?
interesting anecdote...i saw the crowes, billed as'overdose jubilee', at the opera house in t.o. in '95. rumours had it that mick and keith were going to crash the show.
so, we all waited, encore, no mick or keith. but who does show up? chuck and ronnie.
after shake your money maker and a wicked statesboro blues we knew we saw something special.
ty for the vid! peace anyway

Thanks.
