I still think Bloodlines has the best level design of the linear(ish) Castlevanias. It's also a pretty good compromise between SC4 control and classic ROB style.
This may sound nit-picky, but I think the control in this game just isn't frictive enough, I feel more like I'm floating than running and jumping. Simon feels like he has no momentum or weight. Not that I think this is a bad game, I just think Bloodlines is *better* and kinda gets a bad rap compared to this game.
Since I was one who mentioned Julius in an earlier video comment, I'll go ahead and comment about the mention in this video. Harmony of Despair isn't that difficult on Normal, and it's hard difficulty is roughly equivalent to this game. There's an odd mix of Action RPG, Metroidvania, and classic Castlevania in the gameplay, but I'd say it's close to traditional Castlevania than anything else. The rarity of good items and the large experience needed for subweapon levels does suck though.
@deadlypudding Oh, and playing with others actually makes the enemies hit harder and take more damage to kill. So there's a good balance between single player and multi player.
I was singing Duane and Brandos lyrics for the vertical section where it plays Castlevania III music. As soon is it got to the "Walk on stairs hope I don't fall" part, you fell. It was awesome.
The last section of this video shows why SC4 was not an 'easy' game. I had more trouble with this section than anything i found in the first game. The first game has great spikes in difficulty for short periods of time, but I would say SC 4 is overall more difficult. I even had a harder time with it than with 3. But by the time I played SC4 i was in college and doing a lot of things not conducive to honing my gaming skills.
@NKSPKI It's not. It's way bigger than the LP community, there's much more older people and mature people fan base wise. When someone needs help, the whole community comes together, every thursday on PKA podcast with some of the biggest names it's great.
the castle doesn't evaporate under the screen, its just that Belmonts are sissies a lot of the time when it comes to fall damage. Sometimes they are okay, but usually they...not using overused meme....break a leg and cannot continue.
i don't think that multi direction attacks would make a game easier, especialy if they plan the enemy placement/design on aiming in certain direction.
castlevania with its classic delayed whip control still shines in that sense, at least until you get the heavy spells, then its just reaping the benefits of hard work.
In Harmony of Despair, Julius Belmont is only a DLC character on the Xbox 360. he comes free on the PS3 ^-^
and while it's true that the game focuses a lot more on figuring out how to dodge, earlier on it's very helpful to just play online and let more experienced players tackle the boss, while you sit out. just pay attention to how they dodge, and join in next time :)
@nitronzx Yeah, I gave it a try because I wanted to play it with friends. I sucked horribly at the demo, though, so maybe it was for the better. I bought SoTN instead. :p
@warmslurm lul. now, i'm not gonna say it's all god-tier. it's not for everybody...it's a pretty luck related game sometimes, getting better items to drop from enemies/chests/bosses. and there ARE only a few stages. (including all DLC, 11 stages) and really, it has a more, arcade-y feel to it... but I did enjoy it quite a bit. least you gave it a chance :)
I agree Clement. it's not the control that is the issue. they could have easily incorporated the new control into making the most evil of castlevanias...
All Belmonts (as well as Jonathan Morris) level up their whip damage by leveling up their subweapons. The more subweapon levels you gain, and the more different subweapons you level up, the more damage the whips will do. This essentially means you need to spam subweapons at everything until you've maxed them all out, which is tedious in the extreme. A lot of characters in that game level up in similar fashion.
4:10 - Julius Belmont and Yoko Belnades are available in the PS3 version of Harmony of Despair from the get-go, as well as Stage 07. Everything else is still DLC.
8:35 - Simon's reaction to pain is nothing compared to Richter Belmont. While he might not hurl himself across the room like his ancestor, he is incredibly overdramatic about it. Then again, certain enemies CAN hit Richter hard enough to hurl him farther than Simon ever could.
I still think Bloodlines has the best level design of the linear(ish) Castlevanias. It's also a pretty good compromise between SC4 control and classic ROB style.

(Cont.)
This same problem occurs in Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX, in the case that you are on the way to Dracula's Castle;
Again, there is lava rising from the bottom, and it is harder because you must Wall Jump your way up, which is pretty tricky to do.
Blue Twilight DX also gives you the luxury of the Triple Jump from Mario 064 and onward, so the odds are evened pretty well. :)

@ClementJ642
The Buziol and Softendo title Mario Forever for the PC had something ultimately similar to the Rising Spike Wheel segment;
In World 08~03 (or Swiat 08~03 in the Russian version), there would be lava rising from the bottom as you head up the castle tower.
Luckily, you had a meter also showing how far away you are from the lava, so that is a benefit. :)
