I loved this song when I was young but it wasn't until youtube that I found out it was after the Beatles. How can anybody diss this song? It definitely ranks up there with the Beatles songs. Genius!
The album was savaged by many when it came out because of some unrealistic expectation it was going to the next level up from Let It Be or Sgt. Peppers. Instead it was an introspective and quirky, almost self-conscious doodle. Still a great album and a "lost classic" to many young people today who discover it. I prefer it that way...
@Tobacc0 I'm one of those young people who have discovered it. I'm also one of the young people who loves the 1960s-70s and hates modern music. I'm also a survivor of massive criticism for such.
@death2hiphopnRnB One of Paul's best post-Beatles, but not Wings. It pre-dates them and yet is included on so called Wings complilations (as is Another Day).
@RingoGeorgeJohnPaul2 That's so funny! I always do too, and I was when I read your comment. LOLZ!!! Oh boy, we are all so alike in so many ways, aren't we?
@xlBimmerlx i know what you mean and all with ur statement, but to even mention and "compare" justin bieber, let alone pretty much anybody else, to the beatles, is just plain wrong and really cant be done or comprehended. Beatles forever.
@andrewjhyle I'm guessing you're right. Lucky buggers! Used to sit around a campfire in my girlfriend's backyard consuming mushy juice while listening to this stuff. Probably enough information for you by now I guess....
@shelly10538 I read it was Linda once. And, she says it so " properly " in the Queens English ! " Butterpie" . As far as the meaning of the song, im not sure, but I like it !!
right there with you, mistressofaminer, i just discovered "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" from the film "Greenberg," and have been listening to it incessantly since. Much as i did when fate gave me the fabulousness of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" via ...the RADIO in 2008. Still pop it on repeat every now and again. Similar, most certainly; though "Uncle" has that outlandish grandeur and "Scenes" has the intrigue and nostalgia. Bravo Billy. Pour it on us, Paul.
I loved this song since childhood (age 9), the melody and harmony is so beautiful. I remember this was the first 45 record I ever bought and still adore this song into my 40's! Thank you for posting!
Billy Joel is greatly influenced by McCartney, and with all the different textures and contrasting themes in this song, it might of inspired Joel to write, "Theme from an Italian Restaurant"
@mistressofaminer Yeah, I can see that. You know, I read an interview w/ Joel where he said The Nylon Curtain was his ode to the Beatles. I don't really get that because, like you, I think his earlier stuff was so much more obviously Lennon/McCartney influenced. Maybe he was talking about the idea that that album was mostly three or four minute songs. Anyway, it's a great album. I just don't get the Beatles influence.
@mistressofaminer On second thought...let me ammend that. I just listened to "Laura." Um, I was completely wrong. It definitely does sound very Beatlesque. I don't remember the rest of the album having that quality, but I'm probably wrong about that as well, haha.
McCartney is amazing the way he can write such catchy songs using just the simplest of everyday conversations. McCartney is like the Jerry Seinfeld of pop music. He writes great songs about nothing. Peace.
I'm 23. I've been drinking. My dad, a good ol' friend, is shaving in the bathroom. The door was wide open. A picture had fallen off the refrigerator, taken when I was just 14, a freshman in high school. I was pointing out the differences in the eyes of that young man compared to the poor son of a bitch we see today. He compared the two and told me to leave him alone to his grooming. Well, fuck you too, old man! ...He's read it now. It's all good. I just want the pain to go away.
This song reminds me of days at the public swimming pool when i was a kid...lmao, this and Captain and Tennille...but make note...i haven't sought out muskrat love on the Tube....
an oft-overlooked gem. understated humor, a song structure which takes more winding turns than "A Day in the Life" & wonderful spirit of fun (particularly in that "live a little" part)
I remember hearing this on the radio when it was a *current* hit, not an oldie! I always referred to it as "Hands Across The Water". "Band On The Run" was structured similar to this, with the track going through different musical transitions.
Too bad he can't do this in concert. Don't think there was a video to this song either. But it would have been great. Cartoonish, I think. Like Yellow Sub. Great tune.
John Lennon always thought Paul's music was too sappy and shmaltzy.....and this song could qualify as that. But geez this song is FABULOUS! That is Paul's forte, is writing songs about the most simple subjects:)
Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, safe, and envelope, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some say they hear, do it.
Did you know....."Another Day" and "Uncle Albert" are both pre-Wings hits .....however they are included on the Wings Greatest Hits album. So you may want to change your info.
