The Monolith's punishment  doesn't make sense in the English version, whereas in the Russian version, Strelok asks for "power" ("power over the World"), and that is why he gets a surge of power/energy that kills him.

In this ending the wish granter absorbs Stralok (marked one) not turn him into sand and the wish granter I think is liked to C-Con (from my theory of the monolith control centre) and C-Con are controlling the zone and the thingy they are on about that can alter ppls emotions/thoughts ect but I like that theory of yours even if it isnt correct maybe we will get more answers when call of Prypriat is released

This is just for ppl who dont get it The crystal does not grant any wish it only grants it in your mind so basically he is stuck in his own head wandering like a zombie in the real world in other words his soul never was sucked wish thing= a device created by C-Consiousness, to keep people away from the real secret hidden in CNPP. It doesn't grant wishes, but it scrambles your mind so you believe it does. You get zombified. If you want a better explanation , try to get the Real Ending.

If you see the 'true' ending they explain that the wish granter exists to make sure the wrong type of people don't find the truth. People motivated by greed, hate etc will look no further than the (fake) Wish Granter and it kills them to protect the deeper secret. inside Reactor 4..
