Yes, the thing is, if you look at the top right of the screen there is a little red box.

After the kill it says "Pickup Penalty" - 180 sec.

If you pick anything up with that on the screen then if you die you lose all items and cant leave the crater for 180 seconds.

If you leave before you pick anything up and bank you're things and come back WITHOUT KILLING ANYONE ELSE, then you're free to pick up items
