Would it be possible without Karl Friedrich Benz, who patented his first car in Mannheim in 1886? :) The engine was the key to this and everything further
Karl Benz didn't invent the internal combustion engine. Nikolaus Otto invented the internal combustion (4 stroke) engine in 1864. Also, some evidence suggest that two Italian inventors made a working 4 stroke engine in 1854.
Btw, the French company De Dion made an "automobile" driven by steam in the early 1880's and it was actually faster than Benz's car.
De Dion "La Marquise" in 1883. It was driven long distances.
Santos Dumont was the first one to fly an engine airplane with its own impulse in 12 november 1906, the 14-Bis, which won the french airclub contest and reconigzed as the first one to fly an engined boosted airplane , NOT WRIGHT BROTHERS, they were the first ones to fly an NON ENGINE airplane, boosted by a take-off ramp, really, i dont see no airplanes nowadays taking off in a ramp, sorry, SANTOS WINS! FATHER OF AVIATION!

LOL. The revisionists are out in full force on here I see. No doubt in 25 years Dumont will have been the first man to set foot on the moon instead of Neal Armstrong. You guys make my sides hurt. Never mind history...never mind research just make it up as you go. What a gathering of trolls.lol
their asses you guys know nothing WHO INVENTED THE FIRST PLANE WITH OWN PROPULÇAO ALBERTO SANTOS DUMONT WAS HE COULD MAKE AN AIRPLANE flying. IT WAS NOT DESIGNED IT AND ONE-A dipshit AND LAUNCHED THE WIND. HE DID A PLANE THAT could fly himself. WHAT IS EARLY TODAY AIRCRAFT WAS LAUNCHED WITH A CATAPULT? How they manage to cross the ocean? CATALPULTA WOULD BE A SIZE OF A PARENT.0
Everybody stops talking about the engineering of the 1900's Thousands were trying to fly in any way the could. That was Dumont's objective and he did. I don't care if the brothers used a kite or catapult they were trying too in secrecy to save their patent
if they showed up in France for the competition they could be the first but they didn't.
Shivkar Bapuji Talpade - he was the first person on the planet who flew an aircraft in 1895 , his aircraft design was later seen & copied by many westerns & THE WRIGHT-BROTHERS flew their aircraft which was the copy of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade's aircraft , so WRIGHT-BROTHERS illegaly tooked the credit
Dumont's 14bis (designed and built by G Voisin and R Esnault-Peltrie) was just a very poor copy of the Wright's 1902 glider (so Voisin and Peltrie stated) and was even "officially" called a "Type du Wright" by the Aero Club du France in 1906. Dumont's 14bis lacked cambered airfoils, a propeller, and a 3-axis control system. It was just a giant box kite with a big engine.
Popular history has it that the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk were the first to fly [a heavier-than-air craft], but this is not true! The first flight was by a twenty-five year old New Zealander, Richard Pearse on March 31, 1902, at Waitohi, New Zealand near Timaru. His first successful flight was only 4 meters high, controlled, and around 350 meters in length.
An uncontrolled (unguided) and propelled by a rail system flight. I do not count this as the first flight, it is just like throwing a stone with wings.
@lucasmontec ; You are not quite right here. Hiram Maxim did actually achieve free flight, but only by accident, when the guide rails, which kept his aeroplane down, broke. He flew about 550 meters before he landed again, but since it was unintended and without much control, he didn't claim a first. He left that to the Wright brothers in 1903, and here in Europe, to Traian Vuia, in March 1906.
And Hiram Maxim didn't use a catapult. He used a very light and powerful steam engine.
you are distorting all the facts, I will not waste my time with you. Santos Dumont flew on October 23, 1906 and was attended by a crowd and a group evaluating the Aero Club of France .... while wright brothers hid their "catapult" kite
@manegregory The facts are quite easy to establish. Analysis of both still and film photos of Dumont's 14bis, by aeronautical engineers, proves beyond any doubt whatsoever that Dumont's 14bis not only never flew, it was completely incapable of flight. Dumont had several models after the 14bis, but his first and only success occurred on Feb13,1909. Unfortunately, Dumont had illegally installed the Wright's patented flight control system and got sued.
The Federation Aeronautique International corrected their original mistake concerning Dumont's Nov12, 1906 power hop of 722ft. In Oct of 1908, after Wilbur Wright had begun his Euro demo flights, the FAI "officially" recognized the Wright's 1903, 1904, and Wilbur Wright's 1905 (Oct 5) flight of 24 miles, which was witnessed by over 1,100 people. These witnesses included the Aero Club of America and the Scientific American magazine editors.
Santos Dumont flew on October 23, 1906, not November 12. ....and the Wrights' plane can only fly within 24 miles of a tornado ... sorry but it's reality.
Dumont didn' t fly on either occasion (Oct 23 nor Nov12 of 1906) and there is even film proof of this failure from Nov12th. Dumont's 14bis (designed and built by Gabriel Viosin and Robert Esnault-Peltrie) lacked a propeller, airfoils, and control system. By force only, the light weight of the 14bis combined with forward speed allowed it get off the ground for a short distance. The 14bis had no capability of controlled & sustained flight. Wilbur Wright was the first to successfully fly in Europe.
manegregory-The FAI, the organization formed a few weeks before Dumont attempted to fly on Nov12, 1906 initially stated Dumont was first, but the members of the FAI at the time had never seen an airplane before and didn't realize that Dumont's Nov12, 1906 "hop" was in fact a failure. After Wilbur's 1st demo flight (8/8/'08), one FAI official was quoted in a Paris newspaper, "...I realize now that after two years of watching flight attempts, today I have seen my first flight of an airplane"!
Rolls Royce engines??? That was a 12 HP engine that the brothers designed. It was barely enough to drive the two props which were chain driven. The engine only weighed about 50 pounds.
The Wrights designed all of their own engines and the Flyer I had a 12.8 hp engine that weighed in at 165 US lbs.
The video above shows a variety of Wright Flyers including their 1910 glider with their automatic stablization test configuration model. Their are a lot of individuals confused about Santos Dumont. Dumont had nothing to do with the invention or development of the airplane as we know it today. Dumont's first successful flight didn't occur until 1909.

If you built two planes:
The flyer and the 14-bis, using the original materials and engines, just one will fly.
Search on You tube for ( 14-bis replica ) and you will find the real history about the first plane to fly.
After watching the videos, get your conclusion :-)
All arround the world, and each time more and more Americans are finding the real history about the plane, and agree that
Santos Dumont was the first one to fly :-)
